Over two decades, Bravo’s Top Chef has introduced viewers to nearly 300 food luminaries — making and breaking careers with what the culinary community has come to regard as the most prestigious (or at least the most taxing) cooking competition.
THR spent months speaking with dozens of the executives, producers, talent and chefs who’ve worked on the show over its 20-season run, and the result is a definitive oral history of the landmark reality competition. Previously untold anecdotes about that frantic first season and early days of “too much” reality drama and testimonials of its reshaping of food media — “Food Network should be paying Bravo residuals!” — and incalculable impact on American dining tell the story of how Top Chef elevated itself from mere genre TV to become an institution.

Los Angeles -- Kristen Kish made winning the "Top Chef: Seattle" finale look easy.
In reality, preparing her five-course meal on the fly as the Bravo cooking competition's judges and a crowd of diners spectated from the sidelines was a non-stop endeavor requiring several hours of preparation – and some phony silverware.
The 28-year-old chef de cuisine at Boston restaurant Stir was crowned champion of the 10th season Wednesday and took home the $125,000 grand prize after facing off against Brooke Williamson, the 34-year-old co-executive chef of Los Angeles restaurants Hudson House and The Tripel.
Kish's winning menu consisted of chicken liver mousse, citrus and lavender cured scallop, bone marrow and red snapper with leeks, Little Gem lettuce, tarragon, uni and shellfish nage.
"At the end of the day, my cooking is not super complicated," Kish said after winning. "My goal for this menu was just to do simple, good, elegant food with precision and excellence,...

As the editor of AfterElton.com, I sometimes have to watch shows I don’t particularly care about and then interview those involved in making that program. Let's just say that sometimes it can be a bit of a chore. (Who said anything about Most Eligible Dallas? I didn’t bring that show up!)
Okay, maybe I did mention Med, but perhaps I shouldn’t speak ill of that particular show because it’s thanks to my having interviewed Drew Ginsburg, one of the “friends” on Med, that I stumbled into an opportunity to interview someone else from a show I actually like a lot. I'm speaking of Top Chef and the person I had the good fortune to interview was judge Gail Simmons, who also happens to be the host of another show I really like: Top Chef: Just Desserts. Even better, it wasn...
