No Strings Attached **
Stars: Ashton Kutcher, Natalie Portman, Kevin Kline, Cary Elwes | Written by Elizabeth Meriwether, Michael Samonek | Directed by Ivan Reitman
No Strings Attached has a curiously similar plot to the forthcoming Friends With Benefits, due out later this year which stars Natalie Portman’s co-star from Black Swan Mila Kunis. Coincidence or deliberate rivalry, we’re not sure but what is certain is that No Strings Attached is a largely mirthless romantic comedy which drags its feet through a predictable over-long plot and wastes its support cast’s talent.
It stars Ashton Kutcher as Adam, a production assistant on a popular TV show (which bears more than a passing resemblance to Glee), who has flirted with Emma (Natalie Portman) as they’ve crossed paths over the past 15 years. When he finds out that his sitcom actor father (Kevin Kline) is sleeping with his ex-girlfriend, he promptly gets blind...

No Strings Attached Directed by: Ivan Reitman Written by: Elizabeth Meriwether (screenplay), Michael Samonek and Elizabeth Meriwether (story) Starring: Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher, Kevin Kline, Greta Gerwig, Jake M. Johnson, Ludacris Romantic comedies need a good kick in the pants, and an aging Ivan Reitman ain't the guy to do it. No Strings Attached, the first of at least three 2011 films about non-committal sex (with Friends with Benefits and Hall Pass in hot pursuit), is only sparsely amusing and never insightful. Big surprise. Who would have guessed that a 64-year-old director would be the wrong choice for a movie about hip people half his age? No Strings Attached might have been a decent film had it followed through on its premise, but that it falls victim to just about every romcom trapping negates the most potentially interesting thing it has going for it. Everyone involved has proven themselves elsewhere. Reitman...

No Strings Attached
Starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher
Directed by Ivan Reitman
Rated R
As you may well be suspecting, No Strings Attached presents us with the common assertion that sustaining a friendship with benefits borders on the insanely unfeasible. No matter how many ground rules you set, or walls you build, sooner or later you will fall into the unseen, but ever present, pothole of emotional connection. This we all know, and despite all of the glaring warnings against setting such relationship standards, many of us do it again and again. So, why watch a movie about it, you ask? Well, because it’s actually pretty damn funny.
Writers Elizabeth Meriwether and Michael Samonek bring us the story of Emma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher), an aspiring writer and doctor who, over the years, have experienced a series of run-ins that, under most circumstances, would lead to a romantic relationship.

Chicago – When a handsome studmuffin meets a fetching, fabulously hot doctor, what’s the outcome? That’s right, sex without a relationship, Aka Friends with Benefits. And a movie featuring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman called “No Strings Attached.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Directed by comedy veteran Ivan Reitman (”Ghostbusters”), No Strings has an unevenly funny execution, anchored by some decent comic performances by the pretty leads. In a swift and resolute fashion, it takes the predictable story and gives it some well-appointed starch.
Natalie Portman is Emma, presented to us in a flashback to her camp days as a 14-year old. She is being “seduced” by Adam (Ashton Kutcher) who is awkwardly trying to get over his parent’s divorce. They don’t meet again until several years later, as college kids at the University of Michigan. Emma decides to ask Adam to accompany her on a date. This encounter is memorable,...

Romantic comedies may be a dime a dozen these days; it seems as if by putting two attractive people in a room, paired with a slightly funny situation, and the chemistry shared between the two will blossom into a happily ever after story. The best romantic comedies, however, bring something new to the table. They have an unconventional way of tugging at the viewer’s heartstrings by making them think about the plausibility of what they’re witnessing on screen. This is where No Strings Attached succeeds. Director Ivan Reitman, known for some of the great comedy classics of the ‘80s and early ‘90s such as Ghostbusters and Kindergarten Cop, has crafted a film with honesty, and has succeeded in telling it in a way that there...
