Before John Bradley was cast as the brash yet lovable Jack Rooney in David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo’s 3 Body Problem, the actor felt that he was limited in terms of the roles being offered to him after his turn as Samwell Tarly on Benioff and Weiss’ Game of Thrones.
“I think that they realized halfway through Game of Thrones that I was nothing like that character,” Bradley tells THR. “Dan Weiss said I was so diametrically opposed to the characters I was playing, and I think they could see that I was being put into that character bracket a little bit too easily, and they knew that I could do more than that. They gave me this chance to show a different side of myself, and I was very flattered by the characterization of Jack, in a way, as somebody that’s very comfortable with himself...

One of Netflix’s biggest hits of this year was the sci-fi series 3 Body Problem. Adapted from the eponymous book series by Chinese author Liu Cixin, the series captured the attention of fans due to its complex story and great production, as well as the brilliantly written characters and casting choices. While a lot of fans thought it was complex and were somewhat confused by the differences between the series and the books, the series received positive reviews from critics and fans, so it was expected that Netflix would renew it for a second season. And that has just happened! We are happy to confirm that Netflix has officially renewed the 3 Body Problem for a second series!
The series has been officially summarized by Netflix as follows: “3 Body Problem explores how humanity chooses to respond to its gravest threat. Starting off during China’s Cultural Revolution in the ’60s,...

When John Bradley met with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss about their new series “3 Body Problem,” the first thing they told the “Game of Thrones” actor is that they’d written a role in the sci-fi mind-bender for him. Quite literally. “They said, ‘It’s as close to yourself as any character you’ll ever play,’” Bradley says. “It’s kind of a daunting prospect. It’s a bit like you’re going to see yourself drawn by one of those caricature artists on the street. I’m going to find out what these highly perceptive, very bright people think I am as a person.”
The character Benioff, Weiss and co-creator and co-showrunner Alexander Woo created for Bradley — Jack Rooney, part of the “Oxford Five” of college friends and scientists at the center of the series — may not, on its face, seem all that flattering. Jack is brash and blunt,...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments in Season 1, Episode 3 of “3 Body Problem,” currently streaming on Netflix.
When David Benioff and D.B. Weiss first approached John Bradley about starring in their new series, “3 Body Problem,” they explained that his character would in many ways be the antithesis of the role that launched the actor’s career on their previous show, “Game of Thrones.” On that series, Bradley’s Samwell Tarly was a deferential and soft-spoken nobleman forced to forsake his fortune and standing for a life of anonymity. On “3 Body Problem,” Bradley’s Jack Rooney is a brash and self-possessed working class kid who chooses to give up a career in academia to build a fortune in snack foods.
It wasn’t until Bradley received the first set of scripts for “3 Body Problem,” however, that he understood that Jack had a more fundamental difference from Sam: He’s brutally murdered.

“3 Body Problem” production designer Deborah Riley is no stranger to creating epic environments — she won four consecutive Emmys for her work on “Game of Thrones.”
Netflix’s new series reunites Riley with creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss. “That show was vast insofar as cold and hot environments and in its scope and scale, but I had no idea what the term meant until ‘3 Body Problem,’” Riley says, comparing the two shows.
Adapted from the Chinese science-fiction saga by Cixin Liu, the series opens with the Cultural Revolution. Young scientist Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng) watches as her father is beaten to death in front of a crowd by the Red Guard. She’s sent to a top-secret base on the Red Coast where she learns that the Chinese government has been sending transmissions hoping to make contact. The genius mind suggests pointing it at the sun and so a chain of events unfolds,...

Plot: A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.
Review: As soon as it was announced that Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff were developing 3 Body Problem alongside Alexander Woo, I grabbed the novel and read it. The dense first entry in Liu Cixin’s trilogy was a fascinating look at science fiction from a Chinese vantage point with heavy political implications from the nation’s storied history. In translating the book for the screen, 3 Body Problem incorporates many of the cultural elements from the novel into a global and diverse narrative that sets the table for an ongoing series about humanity fighting against an extraterrestrial foe.

The world that humankind has created for itself has seen countless wars, destruction, and genocide, but probably the greatest war that we’ve been fighting as a species is one between objective and subjective morality. It isn’t uncommon for people to have a tendency to see morality from a rather subjective perspective. There are people who would justify the killing of children in the name of self-preservation. There are people who wouldn’t even bat an eye before taking life for the tenets of their religious beliefs. Then there are people who would harm other people to protect their ‘way of life.’ To be fair, 3 Body Problem indeed seems to draw similarities from several real-world issues.
3 Body Problem, for me, is a study of civilization from a microscopic as well as macroscopic perspective. The series comments on suffering, but not just human suffering. I do not think that humans...

Gone are the days of seeing Liam Cunningham as the trusted deputy of Stannis Baratheon! The knight has now embraced modernity, as he’s playing the suit-booted Thomas Wade, leader of the Planetary Defense Committee, in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. The show is rightfully touted as the next big thing, considering it’s coming from Benioff and Weiss, the same duo who once created a little something called Game of Thrones. And like the HBO show, this one is also based on a series of super popular books—only the genre is science fiction this time.
Cunningham’s character, Thomas Wade, is the face of an organization fighting an alien race, San-Ti-Ti, whose primary agenda is taking over the world and ending humankind. Inarguably the sassiest character in the show, Wade is dynamic, very pragmatic, and also very courageous. He wouldn’t hesitate to murder a lot of innocent...

The latest Netflix series, 3 Body Problem is a commentary on the struggles of human civilization as a whole, which have led to modern-day problems like genocide. Fed up by the cruelty of human expansionism for selfish purposes, Ye Wenjie initiates a domino sequence to ensure the end of this evil that our species has created. In 1960s China, working at an observatory, she invited the San-Ti. Decades later in the present day, five Oxford-trained scientists end up caught in this ring of fire after their mentor Vera Ye dies by suicide. Jack Rooney is one of these scientists, although he has given up on science.

This post contains spoilers for the first season of Netflix's "3 Body Problem."
It's been nearly five years since "Game of Thrones" viewers said goodbye to the ambitious fantasy epic that headlined HBO's lineup for the better part of the 2010s. In that time, series co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss started developing a deeply controversial (now nixed) series called "Confederate," executive produced "The Chair" (a short-lived Netflix show about academia), directed a Leslie Jones standup special, and came under scrutiny for their lack of preparedness while making "Thrones."
Now, after five years of work on varyingly successful stray projects, Benioff and Weiss are back with co-creator credits on another ambitious genre story based on multiple beloved books. This time around, they're putting their spin on Liu Cixin's "3 Body Problem" alongside co-creator Alexander Woo. While the two shows actually couldn't be more different, it's impossible not to...

This article contains major spoilers for the entirety of "3 Body Problem" and Liu Cixin's novels.
The idea of making major changes to the source material isn't exactly a foreign concept to "3 Body Problem" creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The pair famously became household names during their tenure on HBO's "Game of Thrones." While they remain infamous among mainstream audiences for the very public criticisms leveled against the final season of the hit fantasy series, the more invested fans have followed their every move from the beginning. Changes both minor and major inspired breathless internet hot takes but, for the most part, the two proved adept at taking occasionally impenetrable concepts from the books and translating them into live action.
The same holds true for Netflix's "3 Body Problem" (which I reviewed for /Film here), a surprisingly faithful attempt to bring original author Liu Cixin's acclaimed...

"You are bugs," declare the San-Ti, extraterrestrial beings from the Alpha Centauri system who are on their way to invade Earth within four light years. This is an audacious declaration of war, a reminder of an imminent invasion, plastered on every communication device on our planet, from public billboards to any device that supports a screen. This grim development occurs halfway through Netflix's "3 Body Problem," where the San-Ti create an illusion to reflect the Earth's surface on the sky, adorned by an all-seeing eye where clouds should be. Wade is appointed the leader of humanity’s defense, establishing headquarters at Wychwood Manor to coordinate efforts against the threat. Meanwhile, Jin confronts Ye Wenjie with the shocking revelation of her role in inviting the San-Ti. Wenjie’s contempt and her belief in the need to control humanity unsettle Jin.
Wade, recognizing Jin’s promising intellect, recruits her to devise a plan to confront the San-Ti. As expected, Jin conceives the ambitious Staircase Project, drawing inspiration from Polish physicist Stanislaw Ulam’s theory on nuclear propulsion. Despite skepticism from other scientists, Wade sees the project as humanity’s best chance to counter the approaching threat. In the pilot episode of 3 Body Problem, set nonlinearly in 1960s China and present-day London, the series explores the background of the story. During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Ye Wenjie witnesses her father being publicly killed by the Red Guards for his research on Western science, and, subsequently, Wenjie is herself subjected to labor work. But, when she is found in possession of an English book, she is imprisoned only to be recruited by Commander Lei who runs Red Coast, a secret project in an observatory at Inner Mongolia. Given her research in astrophysics, they believe Wenjie’s work to be crucial to the research they plan to be doing in the observatory. Initially, it seems like Red Coast was a weaponization program until she finds out the motive of the program is to communicate with extraterrestrial life.

This 3 Body Problem review contains no spoilers.
Beginning with HBO‘s epic Game of Thrones and continuing with Netflix sci-fi effort 3 Body Problem, producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have come to understand an important shortcut in adapting literature for television: keep as much of the good stuff as you can.
Though latter seasons of Thrones deviated significantly from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series (mostly due to the fact that Martin couldn’t get the final two books in on time…or maybe ever), the early seasons stuck close to the novels’ rich world. Game of Thrones season 1 is a damn-near carbon copy of the book A Game of Thrones, give or take a Littlefinger monologue here or a “Tyrion slept through the battle” there.

Netflix's "3 Body Problem" adaptation, which I reviewed for /Film here, is a genre-bender in the truest sense of the phrase. Based on Chinese author Liu Cixin's seminal novel of the same name, the series takes its cues from hard sci-fi, horror, and even bursts of fantasy while telling a sweeping and genuinely epic story about humanity's first contact with aliens. The live-action series isn't the first attempt to bring the Hugo-award-winning book to the small screen, as China's own uber-faithful "Three-Body" beat Netflix to the punch a few years ago. But as much as hardcore fans might enjoy pitting the two adaptations against one another, even that manufactured rivalry is nothing compared to the behind-the-scenes drama that ultimately led to "Game of Thrones" creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss gaining the rights to put their own spin on the material.

“Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss warned Sunday night that fans shouldn’t expect the John Bradley we know and love as Samwell Tarly in their new Netflix series “3 Body Problem” — and that was their goal all along.
Recounting a night out in a Belfast pub while filming “Game of Thrones” some years ago, Benioff told the sold-out crowd at the Los Angeles debut of “3 Body Problem” that they got the idea to cast Bradley as a snarkier, harsher role after seeing him flirt with a tourist.
Benioff said Bradley was “incredibly sarcastic” and dry in his banter, and he and Weiss were inspired.
“He’s nothing like the Samwell that people know from ‘Game of Thrones,’ and we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun someday to work with John and see him play a character kind of closer to the actual John?'”

Exclusive John Bradley didn’t know what he was getting into with 3 Body Problem. The Game Of Thrones star plays physicist and entrepreneur Jack Rooney in the upcoming sci-fi epic. Speaking to Deadline, he said that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. “Why should I get bent out of shape about what the world might look like 400 years from now,” physics research assistant Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo) says flippantly in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. “I have no control over that.”
The sentiment of those words landed hard on me, because that’s almost exactly how I felt about the bloated and often remarkably boring big-budget sci-fi series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and True Blood producer Alexander Woo.

It's 1966 Beijing, the beginning of China's tumultuous Cultural Revolution, and a handful of revolutionary soldiers are staging a so-called "struggle session." Intellectuals and scientists are paraded before a frenzied crowd, mocked and humiliated for espousing worldviews contrary to the anti-authority ideals of their violent cause. When one astrophysics professor in particular calmly pushes back against the mob to defend his prior teachings on Einstein's theory of relativity, the Big Bang, and other fundamental truths of the universe, nobody knows that the bloody consequences that follow will eventually inspire the single most significant act in humanity's existence -- one tiny ripple that would reverberate through the infinitely large pool of space and time for the rest of recorded history.

Adapted from Lui Cixin’s award-winning Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, and drawing primarily from the first novel in the series, 3 Body Problem is a mystery story that takes place on a cosmic scale. David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo’s series begins with a slew of suspicious deaths in the scientific community. When the world’s particle accelerators simultaneously begin churning out nonsensical data, an unnamed agency becomes convinced that these two events are somehow connected and sends a charmingly disheveled intelligence officer, Da Shi (Benedict Wong), to investigate.
As he sleuths into the ongoing deaths, Da uncovers a conspiracy that can be traced all the way back to the bloodiest days of China’s Cultural Revolution and to an astrophysicist named Ye Wenjie (played by Zine Tseng in her youth and then Rosalind Chao as an adult). Adapting a book named after a physics problem into a TV show meant to entertain the masses is both an admirable challenge and an invitation for disaster. Cixin Liu’s “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy has sold millions of copies around the world. Clearly, readers are connecting with something inside the former engineer’s weighty tomes about Earth’s first encounter with extraterrestrial life — and it likely isn’t the orbital mechanics. The colossal scale, galaxy-spanning stakes, and relatable characters all serve as emotional anchors that can hook people, and they all serve as key, replicable facets for a TV adaptation, too. What’s a bit harder to picture are casual fans scooting to the front of their seats for detailed explanations of interstellar travel and multi-dimensional theory. But hey, that’s the gig. You can’t say David Benioff and D.B. Weiss went into “3 Body Problem” unaware.

Before a rushed ending soured the “Game of Thrones” fanbase on showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the duo had rightfully earned acclaim for wrangling a seemingly unadaptable series of books into a damn good adaptation. Author and screenwriter George R.R. Martin had written “A Song of Ice and Fire” as a partial response to the strictures of TV, crafting a story with the sprawling ensemble, major battles, sex, violence and abrupt demises he couldn’t work into scripts for the likes of NBC and CBS. The book series kicked off in 1996, just a few years before the rise of premium cable culture drivers would make television more friendly to artistic ambition and less subject to the FCC. Aided by a stellar cast and strong support from HBO, Benioff and Weiss nonetheless did exceptional work translating Martin’s vision into a nuanced drama with a deep bench of antiheroes and competing points of view.

Taking place between China’s revolutionary 1960s and present day, where science appears to be “broken,” Netflix’s 3 Body Problem is a bracing new kind of sci-fi story from the creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. We talked to three of the show’s central “Oxford Five” characters about bringing Liu Cixin’s award-winning book series to life.

What did you know about this role when you auditioned?
I didn’t have any context, really. I’d heard of the books, but I had not read them. I just knew it was like a sci-fi thing from the guys from Game of Thrones.

The final trailer for Netflix’s 3 Body Problem teases that “they” are coming and reveals the discovery in the ’70s of something called the “Wow” signal. There’s a lot going on in the final trailer, yet it still manages to pull off being as vague as possible. If you haven’t read Liu Cixin’s 3 Body Problem book trilogy, the trailer will hint at what’s in store without spoiling the experience.
Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and True Blood‘s Alexander Woo created the series and serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. Netflix’s Peter Friedlander, Vice President of Scripted Series, encouraged Benioff and Weiss to read the trilogy back in 2019, and both were immediately hooked.

Writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are perhaps best known for adapting and showrunning HBO’s hugely successful fantasy drama Game Of Thrones, which took the world by storm from its debut in 2011 through to 2019, even if the final series was controversial amongst the fans.
Since then, they’ve concentrated mainly on solo projects – though in recent days we’ve also heard about their brush with the Star Wars-verse. Beinoff wrote the 2019 Ang Lee film Gemini Man, which starred Will Smith, while Weiss wrote the screenplay for the 2022 Netflix teen comedy Metal Lords.
Their return to television sees them at the helm of Netflix science fiction drama called 3 Body Problem.
The synopsis reads as follows:
