Hi-Fear is the final instalment of the trilogy that started in 2013 with Hi-8 and was followed in 2018 by Hi-Death. Legendary scream queens Brinke Stevens (The Slumber Party Massacre), Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers), Deborah Dutch (Hard to Die), and Courtney Lercara (Slaughterhouse) have joined the cast of writer/director Bobby Canipe Jr.’s upcoming horror project Grandma, a tribute to the shot-on-video horrors of the 1980s and ’90s! In Lercara’s case, this means she will be earning her first screen credit in thirty years, as she last appeared in the anthology Things back in 1993.
To ensure that Grandma will perfectly emulate the look and feel of the shot-on-video movies of the past, Canipe has brought on a dream team of executive producers and creative consultants that consists of multiple Sov filmmakers: Donald Farmer, Dustin Ferguson, Mark Polonia, Joel Wynkoop, Todd Sheets, Gary Cohen, Tim Ritter, Brad Sykes, and Eric Stanze. Scott Appleby will be providing the required original synth score.

After playing Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, Elijah Wood expanded his eclectic career by starring in a wide array of films. Despite being invested in several genres, Wood is partial to horror, having started his career in a made-for-tv horror flick titled "Child in the Night." Over the course of his career, Wood starred in several horror offerings, from 1993's "The Good Son" to 2012's "Maniac." Taking his love for horror a step further, Wood founded his production company, SpectreVision, which has churned out standout titles such as "Mandy," "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night," and "Color Out of Space."
As Wood has been championing the indie horror movement in subtle yet significant ways, he was asked about the opening and closing films he would choose for a Halloween-centered film festival. His answer for the closing film is John Carpenter's "Halloween,...

Ahhh, the late ’80s/early ’90s… the heyday of shot-on-video horror. Where anyone could pick up a camera, make a movie and get it into video stores; well at least in the US. This was also the era that made household names out of the likes of Donald Farmer, Tim Ritter, and the Polonia Brothers… Filmmakers who, to this day, are still producing low budget genre films and still have a rabid fan base! I’m not going to lie though, the oeuvre of these filmmakers is somewhat of an acquired taste. Always low budget, often made with recurring cast and crew, very much what you’d call DIY filmmaking – right down to using familiar stock music and stock video footage. Yet often times truly falling into that “so bad they’re good category.

Tagline: "What Are You Afraid Of?" Todd Sheets' next feature will be Hi-Fear. Coming off of the terrorific Clownado, which was released in late September 2019 with producer Mem Ferda, Sheet's latest feature is the third film in the Hi-8 series. To release in 2021, Hi-Fear is a horror anthology, which involves three tales: "When Shadows Come Alive," "Losing It At the Devil's Whorehouse," and "Out of Days." As well, other filmmakers working on this latest feature include: Tim Ritter (Truth or Dare), Brad Sykes (Camp Blood) and Tony Goggles (Hi-Death). A few early details are available for this anthology, here! Already in production, Hi-Fear will force the directors and writers to face "their deepest fears (Nightfall Pictures)." And, each short film will focus on a new anxiety. Principal photography has already started on this title, with production expected to complete later this year. To show in 2021, this title already stars: Dilynn Fawn Harvey...

This is a tough review to do for two reasons. The first is that it’s not one film, but eight. The second is that I am so far out of the target audience I would simple never have watched this or thought about watching this if I weren’t reviewing it. With that in mind, this won’t be my personal view of what this collection is, but a reflection of what it’s trying to be.
Hi-8: Horror Independent Eight is a project given to eight directors. The idea is to create a short movie using absolutely no technology from the post-Internet age, so no HD cameras, digital effects or found footage. The purpose was to try and recreate the feeling of watching an old style shot on video horror flick from the 80’s,...

I’m a longtime fan of horror anthology films. I think it goes back to my love of short fiction, something I still really love to this day, and being able to get a snapshot of a story, a quick, often deliberate, sometimes hectic, slice of the chosen genre. Horror is a genre I’ve had a extended love affair with, and so mixing those two things together is a big plus for me. Released by Wild Eye Releasing, Hi-Death brings five new stories with it, each one different in tone, style and,...

Remember going to video store in the 90s and finding some weird bizarre horror film, taking it home and discovering it was a shot-on-video (Sov) sleazefest made by a bunch of guys on the weekend? From the Press Release
Hi-8 is produced by Brad Sykes, Josephina Sykes, and Tim Ritter. The directors’ lineup is Tim Ritter (Truth or Dare), Brad Sykes (Camp Blood), Marcus Koch (100 Tears), Ron Bonk (The Vicious Sweet), Donald Farmer (Savage Vengeance), Todd Sheets (Zombie Bloodbath), Chris Seaver (Filthy McNasty), and Tony Masiello (Sov: The True Independents).
Producer Brad Sykes got the idea for the anthology while working on Srs Cinema’s upcoming VHS/DVD release of his feature The Pact, which was shot on the Hi-8 format back in 1995 while Sykes was still a college student. He missed those days of carefree filmmaking and approached Tim Ritter with the idea, who already had the Hi-8 title and concept ready to go.

“Truth or Dare? A Critical Madness” (1986)
Directed By: Tim Ritter
Written By: Tim Ritter
Starring: John Brace (Mike Strauber), Mary Fanaro (Sharon Strauber), Bruce Gold (Jerry Powers), A.J. McLean (Little Mike)
I didn't know what to expect going into this movie but I overall enjoyed it for what it was worth. Truth or Dare? A Critical Madness? is a low budget movie from B movie director Tim Ritter. For its faults, the low budget camera work works in many scenes to bring out the atmosphere in Mike Strauber’s collapse from sanity to insanity. This movie is rather difficult to come by. The original VHS commands some money on the collectors market and was released on DVD in 2003 but has gone out of print.
The plot centers around a man named Mike who comes home one day to find his wife having sex with one of his best friends.

With the demise of the drive-in theater rose the behemoth home video industry – and a torch was passed from one era of low-budget directors and producers to a new batch of underfunded fringe filmmakers. These fresh faces had new technology, and a new distribution game… but a similar reckless abandon and rebellious tenacity as their b-movie forefathers.
Fright fans were introduced to a new breed of horror movies - made for tens of thousands of dollars… or thousands of dollars… or a few hundred bucks and a borrowed video camera. Unpaid amateurs / quasi-professionals made up the bulk of most casts and crews - and often, the directors and producers were quite inexperienced themselves.
Join me for a visit to the heyday of the direct-to-video, micro-budget horror movie. We’ll explore this strange new cinema of the 80s and see how it evolved through the ‘90s. (Be sure to adjust tracking for best picture quality.

Directors Brian Gaillard and Daniel Murphy and Hm&M Films’ nifty slasher “And Then You Die” is a low-budget horror flick that gleefully channels some of the shot-on-video genre flicks perpetrated by the likes of Todd Sheets and Tim Ritter. The body count is high, the story is stronger than most, and the directors work wonders with the money they had at their disposable. As far as microbudget horror is concerned, the flick is one hell of a directorial debut. Chuck Smith stars as Sam Wallace, a car salesman who is about to embark on one of the worst days of his life. Not only is his wife (Ellie Church) having an affair, he’s also on the cusp of losing his job. When the poor guy’s car runs out of gas on a rural road, things really start to unravel. Although Sam does his best to keep a level head,...

So there are two movements peacefully coexisting within the horror community regarding the quality of video you’re watching at home on your oversized television screen. The first movement involves a thing called a “blu ray” (not a death ray so don’t feel threatened by it). It provides beautiful high defintion picture, crystal audio, plenty of space for rad extra features, usually, more special features than your brain has room for. On the other side of the spectrum, there’s shot-on-video movies. By shot-on-video or Sov for short we mean movies that are shot on or made to look like they’ve been shot on camcorders on VHS tape or other similar medium. I believe the word you’re looking for is dichotomy or maybe something more philosophical like yin and yang. Today we’re here to talk about the Sov varietal with which you may be slightly unfamiliar...

Joel D. Wynkoop is one of the hardest working actors in the indie horror world, having appeared in over 50 films. He is the John Carradine of horror films. Towards the beginning of the decade, he experienced a resurgence in film work and racked up one credit after another. The 80's and 90's saw him working infrequently, though one of his more well known films is Truth or Dare: Screaming For Sanity. I had the chance to ask him a few questions about his career. Here is what he had to say.

To kick start our Faces Of Indie Horror Month, I thought we would start out with an interview with director Tim Ritter ( Offical Site ) of Truth or Dare. His film, Truth or Dare, changed the entire landscape of modern indie horror filmmaking forever so it is only fitting that Mr. Ritter gets the first spot in our interview chair. Here's what he had to say:
Just in case we have any horror fans that are unfamiliar with Tim Ritter, who is he and what is he all about?
I’m just a horror fan who also loves to contribute something to the genre when I can muster up the inspiration and energy. My biggest childhood influences are Jaws and Carpenter’s Halloween. I’ve made over a dozen underground movies over the past twenty-six years (including the Truth Or Dare? trilogy, Killing Spree, and Creep) and written a few books...

Jones (one of the film's producers), and newcomer Joshua Logsdon. Also producing will be Tim Ritter, Steve McNaughton (Reconciled), and John Bowker.

How many Eighties horror fans remember the very first(!) direct-to-video feature, Truth or Dare? It was violent, psychotic fun that spawned two not so great sequels. Producer Reaper M. Jones just dropped us a line to let us know that Truth or Dare IV will be going into active production (principal photography) beginning on May 22nd! The project will star rising scream queen Jessica Cameron, Reaper M. Jones himself, and newcomer Joshua Logsdon. Also producing will be Tim Ritter, Steve McNaughton (Reconciled), and John Bowker.

Fangoria just got word that the makers of the Truth Or Dare trilogy have launched Crimson Carnage, a 7-part documentary about the making of the 1986 film Truth Or Dare - A Critical Madness. You can see part one right here at Fango, then hit the links below for even more.
Tim Ritter's 1986 slasher film was one of the first features to be made specifically for the home video market, and helped usher in a new era of independent horror filmmaking. Long out-of-print, copies have been seen going for upwards of $200 on Ebay, as new viewers discover it for the first time. Later this year, Srs Cinema plans on releasing a box set of the entire Truth Or Dare Trilogy, including the original film and it's two sequels, Wicked Games (1994) and Screaming For Sanity (1996). Surprisingly, the Crimson Carnage doc is not set to be included at this time, though viewers...
