A remake of Ernst Lubitsch’s 1932 film Broken Lullaby, itself based on a stage play, Frantz is the latest character-based drama from prolific French director François Ozon. Deeply melancholy and very moving, it’s a proper old school tearjerker, and more accessible than its austere monochrome aesthetic might imply.
1919. Widowed Anna (Paula Beer) lives in Quedlinberg with the Hoffmeisters, the parents of her late husband, Frantz, who was killed in battle the previous year. One day Anna visits Frantz’s grave and finds fresh flowers. The flowers were laid by a visiting Frenchman named Adrien (Pierre Niney). He says he knew Frantz.
The Hoffmeisters tentatively welcome Adrien into their home. Mrs Hoffmeister (Marie Gruber) and Anna are keen to establish a posthumous emotional connection with Frantz via Adrien.

It’s a black and white drama of Europe in the wake of World War One, but its flashbacks are in color. It’s quite striking, a remarkable collaboration between cinematographer Pascal Marti, production designer Michel Barthélemy and art director Susanne Abel. Francois Ozon, over the span of his nearly 30 year career as a short and feature-length filmmaker, has become one of French cinema’s true giants, despite having not nearly the same name recognition as many of his counterparts. Surely films like Swimming Pool and 8 Women have been seen by a large number of cineastes, and yet he doesn’t have the Hollywood stamp of approval someone like Luc Besson does, nor does he have the cult of critical support filmmakers like Claire Denis or Arnaud Desplechin have surrounding their work.
However, that hasn’t changed the fact that Ozon is quietly one of the country’s great film artists and if one needs any proof, just take a gander at the filmmaker’s latest and arguably greatest work.
Entitled Frantz, Ozon takes to the world of Ernst Lubitsch, bringing back to life one of that giant’s lesser known efforts.

In its best moments, François Ozon‘s “Frantz” feels like a product of old-fashioned moviemaking, the type of perfectly assembled melodrama that would have had audiences grabbing for their handkerchiefs and dabbing at their eyes. Black-and-white cinematography from Pascal Marti reflects the post-World War I setting, but there’s clarity in these stunning images that was difficult to achieve in the early days of cinema. Star Pierre Niney is matinee-idol handsome — with talent to match — and newcomer Paula Beer shows real promise for being so early in her career.

Isabelle Huppert clinched best actress for her performance in Paul Verhoeven’s Elle at France’s annual César awards at Salle Pleyel in Paris on Friday evening (24), in a 42nd edition marked by strong female stories, newcomers and outsiders.

Verhoeven’s tale of a tough female company boss who plays a cat-and-mouse psychological game with a rapist also won best film with Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar presenting the award to the Dutch director and the film’s producers Saïd Ben Saïd and Michel Merkt.

Before Hollywood takes the spotlight this weekend, the film world turns its eyes to France for the annual Cesar Awards. Presented by the French Academy, this year’s nominees represent a distinct blend of international favorites, festival standouts and homegrown hits.

Continuing his prolific streak, the U.S. trailer has landed for Frantz, the latest drama from François Ozon. Shot in striking black and white, the film — which premiered at Venice, and played Telluride, Tiff, Sundance, and more — follows a grieving German widow in the wake of Wwi whose interest is piqued by a Frenchman with apparent ties to her late husband. Filled with intrigue, loss, and romance, Frantz looks to be a striking drama with a lush palette. At first glance, it seemed odd for François Ozon – whose sexy melodramas more closely resemble thrillers – to remake a largely-unseen 1932 Ernst Lubitsch film (Broken Melody), even if it is said to be something of an outlier in the bawdy director’s filmography. I have not seen that Lubitsch film myself, unfortunately, but the more I thought about Ozon and Lubitsch, the more I realized they often share one prominent concern – malleable identity. Both often revisit the idea that one can quite literally be a different person depending on whose company you keep, and that any of these various identities need not necessarily be a lie. What’s in a name, after all. And the lie is sometimes necessary to maintain a sense of peace and harmony.

After premiering at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival in the Galas Program, via Cohen Media, the double 40th César Award nominated The New Girlfriend received a limited theatrical release a year later for a meager box-office take just under one hundred and fifty thousand. Based on a novel by Ruth Rendell, Francois Ozon’s playful subversion of gender dynamics hinges on camp, recalling a legion of vintage queer classics from decades ago (as well as Ozon’s own darker, challenging early filmography when the auteur was referred to as a terrible enfant). As politically correct agendas continue to be applied to queer characters, engulfing deliberations of appropriate representation, items such as Ozon’s film have become a rarity in the English language market. But there’s a perverse mixture of dark comedy and psychological unrest portrayed here, and Ozon gleefully captures a neglected energy of queer cinema once again relegated to the periphery of good taste.

★★★☆☆ Following on from the Kristen Scott-Thomas-starring In the House (2012), which hit screens back in March, prolific French director François Ozon returns to UK cinemas for the second time this year with Jeune & Jolie (2013). Playing at the London Film Festival ahead of a wider cinematic release, it is an elusive study of a 17-year-old girl's sexual awakening built around an exceptional performance from actress and model Marine Vacth. Vacth perfectly encapsulates the youth and beauty of the title whilst the audience is left to admire her - and the drama itself - from something of a distance and through a primarily male gaze.
Taking place across four clearly delineated seasons (each of which is also associated with a particular, pertinent, song) it opens during a sun-drenched summer holiday. Here, the teenage Isabelle (Vacth) has a brief tryst with a young man and loses her virginity during a rendezvous on the beach.
