Syfy will soon not be a safe place for vampires. The cable network has picked up Van Helsing, a 13-episode series from writer/showrunner Neil Labute (Billy & Billie, Full Circle) that will provide a new take on the familiar tale. Along with Labute, Chad Oakes and Mike Frislev from Nomadic Pictures (the company from which Syfy acquired Van Helsing), Simon Barry, Evan Tyler, Dave Brown, and Daniel March will all serve as executive producers on the series. Per Deadline, Syfy’s Van Helsing “centers on Vanessa Helsing, the daughter of famous vampire hunter and Dracula nemesis Abraham Van Helsing. She is resurrected five years in the future to find out that vampires have taken over the world and that she possesses unique power over them. She is humanity’s last hope to lead an offensive to take back what has been lost.” “Van Helsing represents a new mythology in sci-fi by challenging traditional vampire rules,...

Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormakur, who segues between Hollywood and home-based projects, is set to direct and produce serialized crime series Trapped in his native country. From Kormakur’s Rvk Studios, it’s based on his original idea and written by Sigurjon Kjartansson and Clive Bradley. Trapped follows the investigation of the grisly murder of an unidentifiable man found in the water after an international ferry arrives in a small town at the bottom of a fjord. Soon after, a powerful blizzard hits the town with deadly force, making the only road in or out impassable. The 10-part series, the most ambitious Icelandic commission ever ordered, will air locally on public broadcaster Ruv. Rvk’s Magnus Vidar Sigurdsson is also producing and Rvx, the effects arm of Rvk, will design the VFX. Title: Tomorrow You’re Gone Director: David Jacobson Starring: Michelle Monaghan, Stephen Dorff, Willem Dafoe, Daniel March, Tara Buck, Robert Lasardo In conversation with a colleague recently, the subject of Stephen Dorff came up. With Dorff’s recent electronic-cigarette ads, his steady stream of light-lift, scruffy-faced straight-to-video roles and reputation for an offscreen life of, ahem, considerable enjoyment, he’s like the actor equivalent of a 1980s-era hair metal band that never packed it in, I opined. He’s an unapologetically dick-swinging actor — just livin’ the ring-a-ding dream, baby. Despite cheap shots many might take, it’s not that Dorff doesn’t have talent, and isn’t capable of restrained work (see “Somewhere”) or even some [ Read More ]

MILAN -- Buyers and sellers at the 71st MIFED were in no doubt Tuesday that Europe's oldest market is now dead and buried -- at least in anything resembling its current shape. Indeed, many participants seemed to be in Milan as much to identify the body and pay their last respects. "It's farewell to MIFED", said Daniel March of Echo Bridge Entertainment, one of only a handful of U.S. exhibitors in town, the majority having opted to attend next month's American Film Market instead. "We've been surprisingly busy, with a full slate of meetings. It doesn't compare to AFM, but we were (in Europe) for (the Cannes TV market) MIPCOM, so it wasn't an extra trip." "It's dead", added Loic Magneron of Gallic sales outfit Wide. "Apart from prearranged meetings, there's no drop-in trade." It is an open secret that this year's MIFED is to be the event's swan song, but the extent of the disaffection still surprised some. "I expected it to be quiet, but not this much," one French seller said.
