A Nurse Jackie sequel series, originally set at Showtime, is now in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with Edie Falco set to star, Deadline has confirmed.
As we previously reported in 2023, the potential sequel series from Lionsgate Television, producer of the original series, was in development at Showtime. Showtime‘s linear network, which launched more than four decades ago during the early days of cable, was officially rebranded and relaunched in a package with Paramount+ in January.
Per the logline: “10 years after we left Jackie Peyton (Falco) clinging to life in the series finale, we find her back on her feet in spite of having lost her nursing license. The continuation of her story will find her facing new dilemmas in trying to be good in a world where being bad is often not only easier, but a lot more fun.”

Peaky Blinders producer Caryn Mandabach Productions (Cmp) has optioned P.D. James’ Cordelia Gray novels and given itself room to expand the female detective’s universe.
Cmp is forging TV versions of An Unsuitable Job for a Woman and The Skull Beneath the Skin, which were penned in 1972 and 1982 respectively by the celebrated British scribe. As part of the deal with the James estate, the indie has agreed the potential to develop further Gray shows beyond the two existing novels.
Anne Boleyn writer Eve Hedderwick Turner has been brought on board to develop the novels as a returning drama series, set in the present day.
Gray’s character at the time was hailed for being a pioneering protagonist, as a new form of feminism was gaining momentum. The first novel in the bipartite series sees her hired to investigate the death of a young university student who is found hanged in mysterious circumstances.

Florida governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis stirred up a hornet’s nest of controversy when he unveiled a campaign ad that’s been criticized as an outright attack on the LGBTQ+ community.
In the ad, DeSantis slams ex-potus Donald Trump for not being hateful enough, mocking him for his earlier vow to “protect our LGBTQ citizens” in the bizarre video, which is intercut with a series of imagery, ranging from oiled-up bodybuilders to Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby in “Peaky Blinders”.
That latter image has raised the hackles of the people behind the Netflix hit, with the show’s official Twitter account serving DeSantis and his campaign with an unofficial cease and desist over their unauthorized use of a clip from the show.

Exclusive Updated: Showtime is looking to bring back two of its signature comedy series, Nurse Jackie and Weeds. Both hail from Lionsgate Television and former Showtime chief Robert Greenblatt who has a deal at the indie studio.
Reps for Showtime and Lionsgate would not comment but I hear the followups, now in early stages of development, have the original leads, Edie Falco and Mary-Louise Parker, attached to star and executive produce. Sources stress that the projects are still coming together and deals are being negotiated.
The Weeds revival would be written and executive produced by Christian Torpe, creator of the popular Danish series Rita, and would feature Nancy (Parker) in Copenhagen, I hear.
Meanwhile, I hear the Nurse Jackie sequel would be written/executive produced by Abe Sylvia and Liz Flahive who were writers-producers on the original series. The concept is still being finalized.

The first episode of any new show can be one of the absolute hardest for writers to craft. In addition to drawing in a brand-new audience and keeping them hooked for the rest of the season (and ideally beyond), there's no shortage of heavy-lifting to be done to ground the series on a strong foundation. It must establish a compelling main protagonist, their relationship with the supporting cast, and the overarching story as a whole in a way that never feels overstuffed or too expositional. In terms of gold standards over the years, one needs only to study the likes of "Breaking Bad," the two-part "Lost" premiere, "The Americans," and more to understand how crucial it is to waste no time at all in getting off to a fast start.
When "Peaky Blinders" first aired almost a decade ago, few could've anticipated just how popular this Birmingham-set, gangster-focused period piece would ultimately become.

The “Peaky Blinders” film spin-off will begin production in the next 18 months, according to screenwriter Steven Knight. During an interview with U.K. radio station Heart FM, Knight confirmed that he’s “nearly done” writing the script.
“We’re going to shoot it at the studios in Digbeth, and on location in Digbeth in Birmingham,” he said. “Digbeth and Small Heath [are] where the Peaky Blinders actually roamed, so it’s like ‘Peaky’s’ coming home.”
As for whether fan favorites will return for the film, Knight teased: “There’s going to be some familiar faces and new faces that will hopefully be quite surprising.”

Despite “Peaky Blinders” being centered on a gang in the 1900s with razor blades sewed into their caps, it’s the women – both on and off the screen – who are the sharpest of the bunch. Leading the pack is executive producer Caryn Mandabach, whose company Caryn Mandabach Productions owns and operates the Peaky Blinders IP. “I’m the studio, as we would say in America…. Pretend I’m Sony” she told WrapWomen during a recent Zoom interview.
But being the boss is a double-edged razor. On one end, Mandabach gets to oversee exciting projects like partnering with Bushmills Irish Whiskey on a special Peaky Blinders recipe. On the other, Mandabach must always keep her business cap on – no matter how tough the situation.

Peaky Blinders, the hit series set in post-World War 1 Birmingham UK, has ended after a six-season run, or has it? With a rumored movie coming up and a dance-theater piece that will be shown in different venues around the UK, it seems like we’re not quite done with the now-beloved yet troubled Shelby family. To enlighten more about the series finale and what is coming up next for the franchise, executive producer Caryn Mandabach spoke to TV Insider and uncovered what else we can expect from our favorite Birmingham gangsters. In the finale, Tommy Shelby’s (Cillian Murphy) life seems to be getting a little better. So what can the viewers expect from Tommy in the future? And is he past redemption? Caryn Mandabach: This is what the writer Steven Knight wants you to wonder about. And rather than make any assumptions, I think that it’s a bigger...

Warning: contains spoilers for the Peaky Blinders finale ‘Lock and Key’.
Towards the end of the Peaky Blinders finale, when all the ‘black cat’ traitors had been killed or ousted from the Shelby family, the gang gathered in the woods of the recently dynamited Arrow House for a farewell banquet. Ada and Karl, Linda, Arthur, Charles, Charlie, Curly, Johnny Dogs, Duke, and housekeeper Frances… everybody but Lizzie, who’d left Tommy after he slept with Diana Mitford, and the newly disowned Finn, raised a glass to “family” as Tommy said his goodbyes. Tommy believed he was travelling to his death, but had a surprise on the way. We break that down, along with other questions fans may have after ‘Lock and Key’.
Why Was Finn Banished From the Family?
Because he failed the test set for him at Arrow House and chose his friend over his family. Ever since Arthur...

With the sixth and final season of period gangster epic Peaky Blinders currently enjoying a strong run in the UK, Netflix has set the premiere date for the rest of the world. All six episodes of Season 6 will launch on the streaming service at 12:01Am on June 10 in the U.S. and all markets where Netflix has the show’s rights.
The Cillian Murphy-led series debuted its sixth season in late February on BBC One in the UK, setting a new record for a season launch at 3.8 million overnight viewers. That was the best score for the Shelby clan in a debut episode ever and also tied the series’ overall record which was previously set by the Season 5 finale in September 2019.
Season 6 is the last run of the drama in series form. However, creator Steven Knight recently confirmed to us that a movie is definitely going to happen with the same players.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the Season 6 premiere of Peaky Blinders.. After a long wait, Peaky Blinders is back, just having premiered the first episode of the final season on BBC One this evening in the UK, and after the tragic loss of one of the show’s most important players, Helen McCrory (Aunt Polly), who passed away in April last year. Show creator Steven Knight and executive producer Caryn Mandabach sat down with Deadline this weekend to discuss the Season 6 premiere, the impact of losing McCrory on a personal and storyline level, and what’s ahead for the Shelby family.
Deadline: I’d like to start with Aunt Polly’s fate. Clearly fate played a role in what happened given Helen’s sad passing. Steve, did you have to go back and start over, or had you already factored Helen...

BBC One has set the premiere date for the sixth and final season of Peaky Blinders with the award-winning period gangster saga set to return on February 27 at 9pm in the UK. The date was made official this morning in Birmingham, home to the fictional Shelby clan, via a 42-foot high mural looming over Digbeth’s Old Crown (see it in full below).
The season will run for six episodes on BBC One on Sundays. Netflix airs the hit series outside the UK, though a start date has not been confirmed. Typically, the show begins on Netflix following the original UK run.
Cillian Murphy is back as Tommy Shelby, who we saw in the trailer released last month to be seeking a means for the titular clan to finally rest. Returning as well are Tom Hardy, Paul Anderson, Finn Cole, Anya Taylor-Joy and Sophie Rundle, among others. Stephen Graham also appears.

Peaky Blinders lost one of the family last week with the death of “Aunt Pol” Helen McCrory, but the hit BBC drama series forged on with filming on Monday while paying tribute to its former cast member.
“Forever part of the Peaky Blinders family,” the show posted across its social media accounts, alongside a clapperboard illustrated with McCrory in character and the words: “Rest in peace Helen.” The image was taken by director Anthony Byrne.

Peaky Blinders has been lensing since January, but there is no word yet on how the show will move forward without McCrory. It is unclear whether she shot any episodes, but her untimely death will likely change the final arc of her character.
Peaky Blinders co-star Cillian Murphy was among the many who remembered McCrory last week. “I am broken-hearted to lose such a dear friend.

Refresh for updates: Helen McCrory, known for acting in a number of beloved franchises including Peaky Blinders, Harry Potter and Penny Dreadful, died Friday at 52.
Shortly after her husband Damian Lewis announced the news of the actress’ passing, tributes from McCory’s co-stars, colleagues and organizations began streaming in. Peaky Blinders shared a statement remembering the star who played Aunt Polly Elizabeth Gray:
“Helen’s performance as Polly Gray was inspirational, joyous, transgressive, hilarious and incredibly moving. As a person she was off-the-scale charismatic, and deeply caring. We feel so privileged to have worked with her over the last decade. All our thoughts and love are with Damian and family.”
Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight responded to McCrory’s death in a statement, revering the actress for her skills.

‘The city is a character in its own right’. ‘This cast gets on so well, we’re like a family!’ ‘I never read reviews, we made this for the fans.’
Of all the clichés uttered on the promotional circuit, the one most likely to sink the stomach is being told that a hot new series ‘is really a 10-hour movie.’ As a phrase, it’s so derided by now the real wonder is that anybody continues to say it (and yet they do. Perhaps they’re telling the truth about not reading their own press).
As explained neatly here by Vulture’s Kathryn VanArendonk, it’s a frustrating thing to hear because it does TV a disservice, equating value only with the novelistic or cinematic and snobbishly assuming that for TV to be truly worthwhile, it has to be something other than television. Exclusive: With yesterday’s news that BAFTA-winning period gangster epic Peaky Blinders will conclude with its sixth season came a promise of the series continuing “in another form,” creator Steven Knight said. Elaborating on that, he tells Deadline, “Covid changed our plans. But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie. That is what is going to happen.”
A film has long been considered for the series, and while there are no details for the moment and Deadline understands that nothing has been formalized, it would seem a logical extension for the show which has become its own industry — or as Knight has told me in the past, Peaky is “a beast that will not die.” There have been tie-in books, clothing lines, an official soundtrack and a video game. Knight has also been approached about a spinoff ballet version and a West End musical.

Fans of Cillian Murphy and the BBC drama “Peaky Blinders” are in for some bad news. The series’ sixth season will be its last, per a report dropped on Variety.
The show, created by Oscar-nominated director Steven Knight, tells the story of Tommy Shelby (Murphy) and his family’s rise to power throughout the city of Birmingham’s working-class post-World War I. Though the series had recently resumed production due to the coronavirus, the BBC confirmed that Season 6 would close out the series. Knight told Deadline he still plans to follow-up the series finale with a movie, saying, “Covid changed our plans. But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie. That is what is going to happen.”
The move is a bit shocking considering Knight had recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly last year and hoped the series would continue beyond...

Peaky Blinders is gearing up for its endgame, it has been announced.
That's right, the beloved series will wrap after its forthcoming sixth season.
But series creator Steven Knight is teasing that the story will "continue in another form."
The hit drama follows the story of Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his notorious family’s rise to power against the backdrop of working-class, post-wwi Birmingham.
The news is somewhat surprising, especially when you consider that Knight previously said the series would have a seventh season.
However, production on the sixth season was postponed due to the pandemic, and it's returning to production almost a year later than planned.
Knight said in a statement on Monday:
“’Peaky’ is back and with a bang. After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy, and the stakes have never been higher. "

The Shelby family is hanging it up, to a degree.
BAFTA-winning period gangster saga Peaky Blinders is due to conclude after the upcoming sixth season, which has begun filming, producers said today. The news that Season 6 will be the last for the Birmingham clan is likely to be met with dismay by the rabid global fanbase, especially after Season 5 drew record numbers for BBC One. Still, after a long production delay due to Covid, there is solace that the team is back.
Created by Steven Knight and starring Cillian Murphy, the beloved drama first aired on BBC Two eight years ago before making the move to BBC One in 2019 with audiences of over 7M. Outside the UK, it airs on Netflix.

Set in Birmingham, England, “Peaky Blinders” takes place after World War I and stars Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, a powerful member of the Shelby crime family.
“‘Peaky’ is back and with a bang,” creator and writer Steven Knight said in a statement Monday. “After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher. We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”

Hit BBC drama “Peaky Blinders” will end after its sixth and final season, but creator and writer Steven Knight has promised the story will “continue in another form.”
Hugely popular overseas, the series follows the story of Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his notorious family’s rise to power against the backdrop of working class, post-wwi Birmingham. BBC confirmed the show’s terminus on Monday, when announcing that it had resumed production in the U.K. under strict Covid guidelines.
The season 6 ending is something of a surprise given Knight previously told Entertainment Weekly in 2019 that “Peaky Blinders” would live to see season 7. However, a year’s delay in production due to the pandemic is likely to have accelerated plans to wrap with season 6, which will likely air in late 2021 or possibly even early 2022 depending on how quickly production can complete filming amid the U.K.’s ongoing virus crisis.

The Irishman and Boardwalk Empire star Stephen Graham has landed a role in another gangster drama — this time joining the cast of Peaky Blinders.
Graham was poised to take on a role in Season 6 of the BBC’s hit drama, but the Tiger Aspect and Caryn Mandabach Productions series did not begin shooting because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Exclusive: Coming off of its highest-rated run so far, the Steven Knight-created period gangster saga Peaky Blinders will begin shooting its 6th season in March. That’s after a move to BBC One last year and a first BAFTA for Outstanding Drama in 2018. Executive Producer Caryn Mandabach is the proud owner of the series that stars Cillian Murphy, and her Caryn Mandabach Productions has managed to remain independent amid a shifting television landscape and flurry of consolidation.
When we spoke recently, Mandabach felt it was important to talk about rights. In discussions with her fellow producers who have seen success, ownership is a main topic. “Everyone is feeling the heat,” she says. “No one who has already achieved success wants to go work as a producer for hire… The meaning of rights over time is if you’re careful and you own it, you are going to do right by it.

Peaky Blinders fans in the U.S. still have to wait until Netflix drops Season 5 of the epic gangster drama on October 4, but in the UK last night, the season drew to a close on BBC One with a series high 3.8M overnight viewers. The figures edged the record previously set by this season’s episode 3, and come with a higher share at 22.6% of the audience. Overall, the Cillian Murphy-starrer has been blowing away numbers from Seasons 1-4 which aired on BBC Two. The first four episodes of this season have averaged 5.9M in 7-day consolidated viewing across all screens.
When the season debuted in late August, Peaky blazed back onto UK television with its best-ever launch at an average 3.7M viewers in the overnights (6.2M consolidated). Before the move to BBC One this year, Peaky’s highest overnight was the Season 4 finale at 2.4M. The Steven Knight-created...

Netflix is bringing back Peaky Blinders for a fifth season and we’ve got a fantastic new trailer to share with you for it that is sure to get the fans pumped up for what this next season will entail. In the next chapter of the story, the Shelbys grapple with the 1929 stock market crash, and Tommy “confronts new threats to his power from younger family members and fascist rivals.”
It’s been two freakin’ years since Peaky Blinders Season 4 was released on Netflix and I’m so happy that we’ve got six more episodes coming our way soon! It’s been promised by series creator Steven Knight that this season will be filled with “shocks and surprises.”
Here’s the synopsis:

Cinematographer Si Bell was thrilled to learn he and director Anthony Byrne had been tapped to shoot the fifth season of BBC’s “Peaky Blinders,” but surprised to find out how free a hand executive producers Caryn Mandabach and Jamie Glazebrook were giving them to determine the scheme of their six-episode run.
“I expected to meet the execs and talk about the set look and all the rules and how they liked things done, but it wasn’t like that at all,” Bell says.
The series stars Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, head of the Shelby organized crime family in 1920s Birmingham, England. Loosely based on a real-life urban youth gang that was active in the nation from the 1890s into the early 20th century, the series jumps forward several years each season from the previous one to deliver a fresh narrative. For U.S. viewers, Season 5 drops Oct. 4 on Netflix.
