Exclusive: FX’s Alien series has started production in Thailand but without its stars who are SAG-AFTRA members due to the ongoing strike.
So far, Sydney Chandler is the only officially confirmed cast member, playing the female lead. Deadline can reveal that Alex Lawther, known for his starring role in Netflix’s young adult drama The End of the F*cking World, has been cast as the male lead, a soldier named Cj, with Samuel Blenkin (Black Mirror) as another main character, Boy Kavalier, a CEO. Additional cast members include Essie Davis as Dame Silvia and Adarsh Gourav (The White Tiger) as Slightly.
The deals for the actors were made well before the SAG-AFTRA strike started July 14, and those who are members of the American union are not currently in Thailand working on Alien, which is an Equity production, sources tell Deadline.

Talks between the U.S. actors union SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have broken down, and it’s expected that SAG will vote to go on strike today, joining the Writers Guild, which has already been on strike for more than two months now. The writers strike has shut down multiple productions, and any projects that are still in production may soon have to shut down or find a way to work around the fact that SAG actors won’t be reporting to set until the strike is over. In there coverage of the impending SAG strike, Variety mentions that one of the productions that will be complicated by this strike is the Alien TV series that Fargo TV series creator Noah Hawley has been developing for “FX on Hulu” – and they also revealed that the show will be filming in Thailand.

As a historic dual strike by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, last endured in 1960, gets ready to bring the global film and TV industry to its knees, the worst-case scenario many have dreaded for months is fast becoming a crushing reality.
Talks between the U.S. actors union and Hollywood’s collective bargaining agent, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, broke down Wednesday after a turbulent 12-day period of extended negotiations. At midnight Pacific time, both sides concluded talks without reaching an agreement, thus triggering a strike vote by the SAG-AFTRA National Board for Thursday morning. A strike is expected to be called, and the union will direct its 160,000 members to immediately stop all scripted film and TV work around the world.

Conrad Rothmann..
The film business was saddened to receive the news of the passing of SFX impresario and creator of illusions, Conrad Rothman on 21 June 2013 - the winter solstice. Conrad died of a heart attack on his way to a hospital in Sydney. An American import into our film industry in the 1970.s, Conrad was perhaps one of the first SFX men to hit our shores, and he was most welcome. .He was thought of as the .stunt-glass-kid. of Australia..no one did glass like Conrad., ex-wife and dear friend Natalie Hammond said of him. Conrad went to film school with Steven Spielberg and Richard Franklin. He worked often with the latter and wished he had with the former!
His final years were spent working out of Fox in Sydney in an office and workroom with Aet, where he was known as Corny. Conrad was the genuine eccentric and much loved by everyone.
