As a part of the festival, Kaffny revisits the 1992 La riots which was sparked by acquittal of 4 police officers in the police brutality case of Rodney King. It cost 53 lives and a billion dollars in property damage. As the rioters looted and torched the South Central while police were busy guarding Beverly Hills and other rich neighborhoods, it was Korean American businesses that took the brunt of destruction. As it was the case last year with documentary filmmaker Dai sil Kim-Gibson Retrospective, Kaffny devotes a part of the festival to present Korean American experiences that are more socially relevant, giving it extra weight and importance. Building upon the last year's presentation of Kim-Gibson' documentaries Sa-i-gu (4/29) and Wet Sand and a panel...

Damn! I totally effed up and scheduled our podcast season debut tonight, completely forgetting that the MoMA Charles Burnett retrospective also begins tonight! And with his masterpiece too, Killer Of Sheep, which I Still haven’t seen on the big screen, and really want to. I have the recently released DVD issue, but, I think this is a film I’d really love to see in a theater, in all its gritty black and white glory.
Anyway… I already alerted you to this about 2 or 3 weeks ago, so consider this a reminder! MoMA sent out the below press release which details the entire retrospective.
But I’ll break it down for you:
What is it? Charles Burnett is being feted at MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art, here in New York City) with a series titled Charles Burnett: The Power To Endure.
When is it? April 6-25, 2011.
Where is it?...

From March 17-20, the Korean American Film Festival in New York hosted a retrospective of Korean documentarian Dai Sil Kim-Gibson, whose body of work focuses on various political and social issues including the minority conflicts surrounding the 1992 La riots and the "comfort women" that Japanese World War 2 soldiers took and forced into sexual servitude. She's not a household name by any account, but she makes that rare, amazing kind of documentary that refuses to boil everything down to good guys vs. bad guys, often portraying situations in the most realistic and complex way possible. Those interested can visit…...

Kaffny 2011 is hosting the first retrospective of Dai sil Kim-Gibson, the pioneering Korean woman documentary filmmaker as a part of their 5th Annual film festival. Varied in length, 5 of her docs feature Korean experiences overseas. Anthropological, yet highly personal in her approach, her films always examine the human cost of such dislocations and give voices to the voiceless. She will be at the panel discussion The La Riots 19 Years Later at the festival with the acclaimed African American director and her frequent collaborator Charles Burnett (Killer of Sheep, To Sleep with Anger). Both Sa-i-Gu and Wet Sand tell the aftermath of the La Riots from Korean women's perspectives. Filmed ten years apart, these films re-examines the meaning of American Dream. The title Sa-i-Gu...
