Buried on YouTube is a grainy video of a Japanese news broadcast. Even if you don’t speak Japanese, the footage is clear enough. It’s February 1988, and throngs of people are lining up for the new Famicom video game, Dragon Quest III. A man with a loudspeaker keeps one line orderly as it twines past trees and storefronts. Frantic shopgirls unbox dozens of copies. A nearby scramble crossing is jam-packed. It’s a video game launch so massive that it spawned a wild urban legend that used to pop up on old GameFAQs forums and schoolyards: The Japanese government had to step in and write a law mandating that future Dragon Quest games could only be released on the weekend to avoid civil disruption.
It turns out there’s no such law on the books. However, it is true that Enix was so concerned about the reports of school...

In 1981, Sir-Tech, the brainchild of the Sirotek brothers and engineer Robert Woodhead, released their first Wizardry game: Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord. The original PC release looks archaic today, with its huge, but sparse, info boxes and empty wire-frame corridors. Updated ports for the Nes and Super Famicom would add finer details and more color to the base experience, bringing the dungeons we crawled in those games to vibrant life. Subsequent Wizardry games would introduce further refinements, and, in some cases, sweeping changes.
Yet the original Wizardry games’ barebones style became the version that endured. When Japanese publisher Ascii brokered a deal with Sir-Tech to import Wizardry, they both prolonged the longevity of the franchise and helped ensure that it reached a wider audience. Now there are over 35+ Wizardry titles that have never officially reached US shores, and the number of direct descendants of Wizardry’s sparse, but addictive,...

Source: Dorkly via io9 How many of you guys remember playing Chrono Trigger? Chrono Trigger (クロノ・トリガー Kurono Torigā?) is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995. Chrono Trigger's development team included three designers that Square dubbed the "Dream Team": Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Square's Final Fantasy series; Yuji Horii, a freelance designer and creator of Enix's popular Dragon Quest series; and Akira Toriyama, a freelance manga artist famed for his work with Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball. Kazuhiko Aoki produced the game, Masato Kato wrote most of the plot, while composer Yasunori Mitsuda scored most of the game before falling ill and deferring remaining tracks to Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu. The game's story follows a group of adventurers who travel through time to prevent a global catastrophe. Square re-released a ported version by Tose...

No matter how you look at it, there are going to be some glaring differences between Japanese and American gaming culture. Certain titles that do fantastically in one country will sometimes founder in another. While the "Dragon Quest" games have always been successful blip on the radar in the U.S., their releases here are nothing compared to their releases in Japan.
While the actual reasons behind the divergence can be disputed, the one of the game's creator's, Yuji Horii (seen above between Square Enix producers Ryutaro Ichimura and Yuu Miyake), has his own theory as to why the games have never caught on as fiercely with western audiences.
"We really focused the Japanese 'Dragon Quest' game on human beings and human nature. How we achieved that had a lot to do with the Japanese language itself. To say, 'Oh, it's so nice today,' depends on who is speaking.

Video game icons come in all shapes and sizes; some wear red hats and overalls while others are simply yellow circles. When it comes to RPGs there's one face that's been recognizable for almost 24 years: the Slime. One of the few characters to show up in every "Dragon Quest" game, the tiny and squishy the slimes have been approaching players since the beginning of the series and have come in various shapes and forms over the years, even receiving their own DS game a few years ago.
After all these years, one lingering question remains: how was the Slime born? I asked one of the "Dragon Quest" creators, Yuji Horii, and he told me that his inspiration for the monster actually came from the classic RPG, "Wizardry."
"I was really hooked on 'Wizardy,' the PC game, and that's kind of where I got the inspiration for the Slime. There's.
