Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is enacting a revenge plot against the eight House Republicans who ousted him.
In October 2023, McCarthy was booted from his position as House speaker when a group of Republicans joined all Democrats in voting to vacate the chair.
McCarthy is out for revenge against the group that he has dubbed the “Crazy Eight” or “Gaetz Eight” and its leader, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), who introduced the motion to have the speaker vacated.
The former House speaker left Congress two months later. This ended up shrinking his party’s majority in the chamber.
McCarthy’s ally, Brian Walsh, is working to round up primary challengers to the “Gaetz Eight.”
The ousted speaker is prepared to mobilize his still-sizable donor network to arrange primary challenges. He is focusing on three representatives specifically. His allies believe that Reps. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina), Bob Good (R-Virginia) and Eli Crane...

Marjorie Taylor Greene has filed a motion to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson, plunging Republicans into a state of uncertainty ahead of Friday night’s government funding deadline.
Greene and other far-right Republicans have been livid over Speaker Johnson agreeing to a bipartisan bill aimed at avoiding a government shutdown. “No Republican in the House of Representatives in good conscience can vote for this bill,” the Georgia representative railed on the House floor. “It is a complete departure from all of our principles. … This is not a Republican bill. This is a Chuck Schumer,...

Kevin McCarthy has been ousted as Speaker of the House of Representatives. The vote comes as part of a campaign from Rep. Matt Gaetz and a posse of like-minded Republicans who have long opposed McCarthy, who is the first speaker to be axed as a result of a motion to vacate from his own party.
The House voted 216-210 to remove McCarthy on Tuesday afternoon. Eight Republicans joined Democrats in vote in favor of the motion: Reps. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), Ken Buck (R-Colo.), Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), Eli Crane (R-Ariz.

Update: After five roll call votes and no speaker. the House is adjourning for the night.
When they return, many members will be marking the second anniversary of the attack on the Capitol.
Previously: As expected, Kevin McCarthy fell short on the 11th ballot for speaker of the House.
While there are reports of an imminent deal with at least some of the dissidents, an agreement doesn’t appear to be finalized as McCarthy’s allies plan to seek an adjournment until noon Et/9 Am Pt on Friday.
On the floor, Democrats have been in a large huddle around Hakeem Jeffries and other leaders.
Jeffries received 212 votes in the most recent roll call, McCarthy received 200, Byron Donalds garnered 12, Kevin Hern got 7 and Donald Trump got one. There were some guffaws when the clerk read Trump’s vote total.

Kevin McCarthy has lost his seventh, eighth, and ninth House speakership ballots.
Nineteen Republicans voted for Rep. Byron Donalds after the third day of voting commenced on Thursday. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) voted for former President Donald Trump, who had not received any votes over the first six rounds of voting, and Rep. Kevin McCarthy made a series of concessions late Wednesday in an attempt to earn votes from members of his party who have held out supporting his speakership bid. The congressman so far has failed in six separate attempts to reach the votes necessary to make him speaker of the House, even with a late endorsement from Donald Trump.
According to Politico, McCarthy agreed to allow a one-member “motion to vacate,” which would lower the threshold of members needed to call a vote to remove a speaker to one. Previously, McCarthy...

Kevin McCarthy is addicted to losing.
Twenty-one Republicans did not vote for the House speaker hopeful on the fourth, fifth, and sixth ballots on Wednesday. Twenty voted for Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), who was the only Republican to vote for McCarthy on Tuesday before changing his vote on the third ballot, while one, Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) voted “present” after having voted for McCarthy on Tuesday.

Kevin McCarthy really, really, really wants to be speaker of the House of Representatives. It’s not coming. The 118th Congress began on Tuesday, and though Republicans won control of the chamber last November, a not-insignificant portion of the party remains steadfastly opposed to giving McCarthy the gavel. McCarthy has lost three consecutive speakership ballots, with 19 Republicans opposing him on the first two, and 20 on the third.
Rep. Byron Donalds joined the 19 other defectors to vote against McCarthy on the third ballot, which means McCarthy is drifting even further away from securing the majority necessary.
