Reema Kagti’s stirring film celebrates the nation’s first post-independence Olympic medal at the 1948 Wembley Games
Unlike its more visible winter sport equivalent, field hockey has been the basis of an infinitesimally small number of features. Most of them – such as the fondly remembered Chak De! India (2007), which saw Shah Rukh Khan coaching an all-girl team – have hailed from the Indian commercial cinema, a sign of the game’s elevated status out east. Nimble stickwork and old-school rollout penalty corners now serve as the basis of Reema Kagti’s Gold, a burnished, sweeping yet astutely framed period drama replaying a formative moment in Indian identity, its Dunkirk on grass: the assembly of the squad that would survive partition to win the newly independent nation’s first Olympic medal in the colonialists’ backyard of Wembley in 1948.
Some standard sports-movie simplification is present. A nation’s emergence is here aligned with the re-emergence of one man,...

Gold
Starring Akshay Kumar, Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh, Mouni Roy, Vineet Kumar Singh
Directed by Reema Kagti
There is something to be said about motivational sports films. They make you stand and cheer even when you know the predictable path invariably taken by the genre.
Gold starts off rather roughly, unsure of who the hero of this game-plan is. It is certainly not the boozing Bengali Tapan Das, played in broad strokes bordering on Bong caricature, by Akshay Kumar. So is it Imitiaz Shah, chosen as the first captain of the Indian cricket team? Imtiaz, played with a very peculiar accent by Vineet Kumar Singh, soon crosses the border to Pakistan but is there to cheer for the Indian hockey team in the grand finale in England.
No. Imtiaz isn’t the hero. So it is the royal arrogant hockey champ Raghubir Pratap Singh, a man of stange aristocratic contradictions...

“The dream that united our nation” is the tagline to the new film being released this Independence Day based on the true events of India’s first hockey team. Gold follows Akshay Kumar as he leads India’s own first hockey team to their first gold medal in 1948. A powerful story about great players who stood up first under the banner of British Raj and then successfully took the gold medal at the Olympics for the first time as the Indian team. Under the production banner of Farhan Akhtar, Excel Entertainment, this inspiring movie will need not only an inspiring soundtrack but also as a period movie, stick to the sights and sounds of the age. As Akshay’s character is also Bengali, there will need to be a certain flavour of Kolkata added to the mix. Thus, Sachin Jigar will headline with additional work by Arko Pravo Mukherjee and...
