Whilst it is not always necessarily true that you have to be an expert in a certain field in order to make a documentary about it, a passion for your subject matter certainly helps. Director Theo Williams, who has been working in and amongst the UK rap industry for the past 5 years, proves this with his newly released YouTube Original documentary Terms & Conditions: Deeper than Drill. His third documentary focusing on the UK rap industry, the film examines the previously underground and controversial genre of drill which is now a dominant force in the UK rap scene. Drill has found itself burdened with connections to gang crime and violence and has regularly been scapegoated in national headlines as being the cause of a lot of problems in inner city and deprived parts of the country. I love Bryan Fuller‘s work with Our Kind of Shows (Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls and more), so I’d really love to see this one go forward.

After swiftly scrapping planned summer drama series Weird Desk last month, ABC has picked up another original drama for next summer, Canadian import Motive, from former Dexter and The Mentalist exec producer Daniel Cerone. The 13-episode CTV series focuses not on who did the crime, but why the crime was committed in the first place. The killer and victim are identified at the beginning of each episode, with the crime then explored via stylized flashbacks which piece together the connection between the two characters and what drove the killer to commit murder. In Canada, the series will premiere in the coveted post-Super Bowl slot this Sunday. Motive stars Kristin Lehman (The Killing), Louis Ferreira (Rookie Blue), Lauren Holly (NCIS), Roger Cross (Arrow), Brendan Penny and Cameron Bright. The series was created by Cerone who executive produces with Louise Clark, Rob Merilees, Erin Haskett, Rob Labelle, Lindsay Macadam and James Thorpe.

In the current edition of Film Comment—an essential souvenir of the history of the festival to date, complete with a list of every feature film to have played the festival in its 50 years—Gavin Smith writes that “The 25-film lineup of the 1988 Nyff was partly a reflection of the decade’s drift and uncertainty—two came from Nyff veterans (Sergei Paradjanov, Marcel Ophuls), two were post-Glasnost rediscoveries (Andrei Konchalovsky, Larissa Shepitko), and nine were bets that didn...
