Turn on the news this past week and you’ll see people from around the country amassing in protest of the recent decision that police officer Darren Wilson would not be indicted for the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. The inaction provoked conversation of race and authority in present day America, with politicians, human rights groups, and driven individuals rallying for reconsideration on the case and justice for all who’ve suffered in similar situations. This includes many in the entertainment industry, who will join forces with the Blackout for Human Rights network this Friday, Nov. 28, to keep the conversation going. In New York, a group of leading indie directors and actors will stage a special screenplay reading of Spike Lee’s "Do The Right Thing," which celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2014. Blackout for Human Rights presents the event, organized by filmmakers Ryan Coogler ("Fruitvale Station") and Shaka King ("Newlyweeds"). John Turturro,...

The 1980s were a time in which the science fiction and adventure film genres reigned supreme. Films like Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Ghostbusters (1984), and Back to the Future (1985) are three of strong examples of classic 80s films that expanded their respective universes to further installments. The sequel, while a sometimes surefire way of making money off of an already established and original idea, can at times continue the adventure and prolong the cinematic magic in wonderful ways.
Filmmaker George Lucas popularized the sequel concept in 1980 with a follow-up to 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope. He had a vision when starting his space opera at episode #4 and The Empire Strikes Back furthered the adventures of Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C3P0. It is thought by many to be far superior to its predecessor. A third installment soon followed and so did a prequel trilogy in 1999. These...

We're proud to present an exclusive clip from 25 to Life, a documentary that will enjoy its world premiere at the American Black Film Festival in New York City on Sunday, June 22. Directed by Mike L. Brown, a protégé of Spike Lee, the film provides a new perspective on individuals living with the HIV virus. The official synopsis sums it up: The film follows William Brawner, a Philadelphia man who contracted the HIV/AIDS virus from a blood transfusion as a child. Will's young mother, grandmother and aunt kept his HIV status a guarded secret, fearing its stigma, and provided him with a fun-loving childhood to distract him from his illness. As he approached adulthood, he suppressed the reality of his HIV status, stopped taking...

Add another tale of surrealism to the great canon of American art that is the fame arc of former Republican primary frontrunner Herman Cain. Upon the launch of Cain's new online network Cain TV on Wednesday, viewers and critics alike appeared to be immediately captivated by one program in particular-- a show called Street Smarts with Lewis Brown, a homeless man with a lot to say. The show, like some other CainTV programming, was a relaunch of a segment from the now-defunct RightNetwork, but Brown had courted the national spotlight before -- in a profile in the New York Times, no less -- published before the start Lewis’ posthumous career as conservative new media star.

Herman Cain celebrated Independence Day yesterday by launching his own programming website, Cain TV, a project that many did not know exactly what to make of when he first announced it. With the programming out and on the open, CNN's Kyra Phillips talked to Cain and asked about one of the most interesting segments on his website, "Street Smarts with Lewis Brown," and how he found the idea for the eccentric commentary from Brown, who is a homeless person from Hollywood who Cain announced had passed away after being asked about his show.

Though our own Jeremy Kirk and Alex Billington have already seen Moonrise Kingdom (read both of their reviews here and here), I'm still with a majority of you in waiting until the film expands to a wider release and hits a theater nearby. However, that doesn't stop us from enjoying a hilarious and very meta piece of marketing for the film featuring Jason Schwartzman in character as scout leader Cousin Ben, showing Wes Anderson's film to his troop from the film itself. This could result in a major paradox sending Doctor Emmett L. Brown into a frenzy, but it's a hilarious video to keep audience awareness high. Here's the promo for Moonrise Kingdom, which Wes Anderson directed himself, for Funny or Die: Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, his seventh feature film, was filmed on an island in New England. It recounts a tormented and surprising story of children...

At a recent 'Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked' screening, the audience was offered more than just squeaky pop song covers. According to the Chicago Tribune, 34-year-old Edward L. Brown stripped naked during a showing of the family-friendly sequel at a Chicago cinema, then sat in the front row of the theater to enjoy the rest of the movie. Audience members, which included children, were soon ushered out, while Brown was asked to dress. He was then arrested for sexual exploitation of a child and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

A Chicago man faces a bevy of charges after he allegedly stripped down all the way to his birthday suit and exposed himself in front of families watching a matinee screening of "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" late last month.
Edward L. Brown, 34, allegedly waited until about a half hour into the 4 p.m. screening of the feature before he stood up from his front-row seat in the North Riverside Park Mall's Classic Cinemas theater, turned to display a different sort of "bonus feature" to the audience of 86 movie-watchers, which included many children, the Riverside-Brookfield Landmark reports.
Officers responding to the scene ordered Brown to get dressed and leave the theater, NBC Chicago reports. The theater also offered refunds or vouchers to all those in attendance at the screening.

At some point you have to ask yourself what is the lesser of two evils? Taking your kid to see Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked over The Adventures of Tintin or Taking your kid to Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and someone exposing themselves infront of their eyes. While this may sound like a twisted game of would you rather, it did actually happen. The latter that is.
According to the Riverside-Brookfield Landmark (via Jim Vejvoda at @StaxIGN and Movieline), 34-year-old Edward L. Brown gave fellow patrons at the North Riverside Park Mall’s Classic Cinemas theater a shock on December 29:
About a half hour into the 4 p.m. showing of the kiddie feature Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, police say an entirely naked Edward L. Brown stood up from his seat in the front row, faced the crowd of 86 theater-goers, stretched out his hands and displayed his genitalia...

The Venice International Film Festival has awarded Al Pacino's Wilde Salome their Queer Lion prize.
Look, I'm the first to crack a Justin Bieber joke, but this hit piece, Does Justin Bieber Have Gender Identity Issues? is beyond tacky. And the author claims to be a doctor. I'm guessing from the same institution of higher learning that produced Fox's Dr. Keith Ablow.
This Catholic mom is afraid to leave her house for fear of seeing something gay. She was recently scandalized by "one gay couple was engaged in inappropriate 'elbow-rubbing.' Another lesbian couple was hugging in a way that was 'clearly not friendly.'" Honestly, I don't want to call her a bigot, because she's obviously in need of help.
In news from Austalia that is yet to be authenticated, a graphic that appeared after the finale for Torchwood: Miracle Day said Captain Jack would return in 2012.

Back to the Future II director/producer Frank Marshall recently tweeted, "Something big is coming soon. Can't say anything yet. No one should know too much about their own destiny. #Bttf." Well, this package from Dr. Emmett L. Brown helps explain: It's Nike's upcoming Air Mag shoe, a replica of Marty McFly's kicks from the first Bttf sequel, that boast self-lacing technology. Put on yer incredulous Crispin Glover bug eyes, because this is pretty wild! More in Buzz Break after the jump.

Producer/director Frank Marshall recently tweeted, "Something big is coming soon. Can't say anything yet. No one should know too much about their own destiny. #Bttf" And then Nice Kicks (via Movies.com) received a mysterious package complete with some recognizable swag and a message from Dr. Emmett L. Brown dealing with some kind of special announcement from Nike tomorrow. But if you really want to get excited, check out the video below! Here's a commercial entitled McFly's Closet teasing the new kicks from Back to the Future Part II: That's right, folks. Even though 2015 is still a few years away, Nike is giving us their Air Mag shoes very soon. In standard Back to the Future fashion,...

One of the most beloved film franchise, Back To The Future, also features one of the most beloved friendships, between characters Dr. Emmett L. Brown and Marty McFly. However, we didn't quite know what had happened to bring the two characters together.
Until now. Thanks to co-writer Bob Gale who, after finding a question about the friendship on Mental Floss, decided to elaborate. Hit the jump to see what the man behind the film, well, one of them, had to say [...]...

Watching the film hundreds of times throughout my life, I've been one of those viewers who's come to wonder about an unknown detail concerning our two protagonists in the Back to the Future trilogy. Obviously Dr. Emmett L. Brown and Marty McFly are good friends when we begin our story, but it's never really explained how a young, awkward and somewhat rebellious high school kid hooked up with a wacky, scientist which many find to be nothing more than a crackpot around town. Thankfully co-writer Bob Gale noticed this question at Mental Floss and came through with info on Marty and Doc's friendship. Here's what Gale revealed as to how Marty and Doc became friends before the film begins: Okay, from the horse's mouth (yes, I'm the horse—er, co-writer, co-creator): We never explained it in the movie. But the history of the characters that Bob Zemeckis and I...

As Back To The Future gets ready to celebrate its 25th anniversary with a limited re-release in UK cinemas, Ti looks back at one of the strangest friendships in cinema history….
At the end of Back To The Future, when failing to get '1955 Doc' to read his letter, Marty runs to Twin Pines Mall (now Lone Pine Mall) to try and stop his friend's murder for the second time. Arriving there tired and exhausted, Marty once again witnesses the Libyan terrorists shoot his friend. His scream of anguish and tears say more than words ever could, and as he slumps near his friend's body, our hearts slump with him.
However, as the Doc appears to rise from the dead, reveals his bullet-proof vest and smiles at Marty, our spirits soar along with Alan Silvestri's wonderful score.
