No one quite mixes drama and comedy in quite the same thick black concoction as John Michael McDonagh, so we'll be watching whatever "The Guard" and "Calvary" writer/director does next. Which will be "War On Everyone," which now has Garrett Hedlund and Michael Pena slated to star (no word yet on Guy Pearce, who was also in talks at one point but we presume he's moved on). The film will follow "two corrupt cops in New Mexico who frequently blackmail criminals. They run into trouble when they take on an outlaw more dangerous than they are." That sounds great to us, and cameras will roll next spring in New Mexico. [Screen Daily] Speaking of movies about pairs of corrupt boys in blue, Nicolas Cage is making another probably mediocre movie: this time it's called "The Trust." Ben Brewer and Adam Hirsch co-wrote and will co-direct a story about "two crooked cops who discover a hidden safe,...

When Nicolas Cage tackles a law enforcement role, he either goes heroic or becomes completely unhinged. But for The Trust, which will see him co-starring with Boardwalk Empire’s Jack Huston, he’ll be veering more towards corrupt and greedy. The actors are aboard to appear in the new thriller, which finds them as dodgy cops on the look out for a fresh payday, presumably to keep them in donuts or something. When they discover a mysterious safe that has unusual safeguards, they naturally covet the contents, which leads them even deeper into the criminal underworld, threatens their lives and leaves them questioning their next move. It just goes to show, kids: stealing is wrong. Mmkay?Making their film directorial debut for this one are brothers Alex and Ben Brewer, who have thus far specialised in music videos and shorts. Alex Brewer co-wrote the film with Adam Hirsch, and they...

Personally, I have zero interest or nostalgia for “Point Break” or the remake, but the remake just got a serious upgrade. In the lead role was Gerard Butler, until he dropped out recently and but he's now been replaced with Edgar Ramirez. The Venezuelan actor is far from a well-known actor, but he killed it as Carlos The Jackal in Oliver Assayas' three-part "Carlos" epic in 2010 and was strong in "The Bourne Ultimatum," Steven Soderbergh's "Che" and "Zero Dark Thirty." He hasn’t landed that break-out role yet, but “Point Break” could be the mainstream one. And we’ve barely scratched the surface of his talents so don’t be surprised if more filmmakers tap him after this. Luke Bracey and Ray Winstone co-star so far. There’s no director signed on just yet, but Nicolas Cage and quickly-rising “Boardwalk Empire” star Jack Huston have boarded “The Trust.” Ben Brewer...

The big challenge for the journos on the Croisette is keeping up with the fusillade of film press releases for projects being sold at Cannes. It becomes a cat and mouse game to stay a step ahead of the Gestapo. Alison Thompson’s Sunray Films is selling in Cannes. As a final tribute to the 2011 Slamdance Film Festival and its nurturing of first-time, independent filmmakers, here’s one last interview. We’ve gone back and talked with the filmmakers of Beneath Contempt, whose initial January 21st interview with Sound on Sight can be found here.
In this unique interview, Director Ben Brewer and Executive Producer Anna Rau, reflect on their time at Slamdance, which was, for both of them, the first festival they’ve attended as filmmakers. Both Brewer and Rau are recent graduates from Emerson College and the excitement, inspiration and confidence gleaned from their experience at Slamdance is palpable. Read on to find out what these young filmmakers learned and who Brewer emailed to express that he would “be willing to hold his coffee on whatever movie he makes next.”

Slamdance opens tonight and will show 95 films from now through January 27th in Park City, Utah. Sound on Sight will continue to post interviews with Slamdance filmmakers throughout the festival’s duration (click here to read yesterday’s interview with the director of Pleasant People).
Today’s interview, with Director Ben Brewer and Executive Producer Anna Rau, reveals the inspiration and thinking behind their film, Beneath Contempt. Read about why it was important to them to steer clear of clichés and over-done movie devices as they told the murky story of a tragic accident and how this mishap weighs on various lives. You’ll also get to read about how they tricked a convenience store clerk into acting at the last minute, and why a band of police, detectives and firemen showed up to one of their shooting locations. Beneath Contempt was a project begun at Emerson College, and is their first feature film.

Jessica Simpson and her new beau, former NFL player Eric Johnson, have been spending quality time together - including a cozy Fourth of July celebration. Two days after Simpson attended the grand opening of the Casino Club at The Greenbrier Sulphur Springs, W. Va., she was spotted with Johnson at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club in Florida. "They were very nice," says bartender Ben Brewer. "She was wearing shorts and big shades. She did look absolutely stunning." The singer, who turns 30 on Saturday, and Johnson, 30, lounged by the pool and sipped fruity cocktails at the resort on the holiday. Photos:...
