Daisy Ridley stars as a woman harboring a terrible secret in the feature film adaptation of Karen Dionne’s bestselling novel The Marsh King’s Daughter. The gripping trailer teases a little too much of the plot, so if you want to go in completely unaware of Ridley’s character’s past, don’t click play.
In addition to Daisy Ridley (the Star Wars franchise), the adaptation stars Emmy Award-winner Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline), Screen Actors Guild nominee Garrett Hedlund (Mudbound), Caren Pistorius (Unhinged), Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project), and Gil Birmingham (Yellowstone).
Elle Smith and Mark L. Smith adapted Dionne’s novel and Neil Burger directed. Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman, Anonymous Content’s Keith Redmon, and Mark L. Smith served as producers. Michael Heimler, Charles Miller, Cliff Roberts, Robert Simonds, Adam Fogelson, John Friedberg, and Samuel J. Brown executive produced. Black Bear provided the finacing.

Spoiler Alert: This piece contains spoilers from the Season 1 finale of “The Recruit.”
In the final scene of Season 1 of “The Recruit,” CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo) wakes up bound to a chair in a dark, decrepit room and finds fugitive Max Meladze (Laura Haddock) — with whom he’s formed a tenuous alliance and nascent sexual relationship — also tied to a chair beside him. After Owen has gotten just enough time to register his own surroundings, a mysterious blond woman walks into the room, wielding a gun.
“Karolina?” Max gasps, uttering the name of her long-lost daughter. Karolina (Maddie Hasson) gives her mother a long look before shooting her in the chest.
She then turns her attention to Owen, who’s reeling from the shock of what’s just transpired. “Who are you?” she demands. “And what the fuck are you doing running around with my mother?”

There’s a moment in the new Netflix series “The Recruit,” starring Noah Centineo, when his character, Owen, finds himself in the middle of a shootout.
As he ducks from a hail of bullets, Owen recognizes one of the people working for the other side as a woman he met in a bar. He momentarily forgets about the life-threatening situation at hand and gives a small wave of acknowledgement to her. The woman responds by shooting at him. How rude!
It’s moments like these that make “The Recruit” an atypical CIA drama. Yes, Centineo’s Owen is a CIA employee who finds himself in the field à la Jack Ryan, but instead of immediately knowing what to do and how to defend himself, this CIA employee is an attorney who is immediately in over his head.

“The Rookie” executive producer Alexi Hawley has mastered the art of the broadcast drama — but he’s a bit of a (pun intended) rookie in the streaming world. However, that’s about to change: Hawley is behind Netflix’s new CIA adventure “The Recruit,” which launches this Friday on the streamer.
The young adult actioner, starring Noah Centineo, is one of three high-profile titles Netflix is debuting in December to close out 2022, along with “The Witcher” prequel “Blood Origin” and “Emily in Paris” Season 3.
For Hawley, it’s his first significant foray into the world of streaming originals, as he’s been busy in recent years turning Nathan Fillion’s “The Rookie” into a hit, which then led to this season’s new Niecy Nash-fronted spinoff “The Rookie: Feds.” The two ABC shows are part of Hawley’s overall deal with Entertainment One (eOne).

Kim Nguyen says he has a love/hate relationship with cold weather.
But he didn’t get cold feet when it came to shooting Two Lovers and a Bear in Iqaluit, even though temperatures could get as low as -50.
“We felt like we were shooting a sequel to Mad Max, we were all driving snowmobiles and wearing gigantic fur coats,” the Canadian filmmaker says with a laugh over the phone from his Montreal home.
The film, Nguyen’s fifth feature, has already screened at Cannes and the Toronto International Film Festival and opens across the country this month. His last feature film, War Witch, set a high bar by being nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2013 Academy Awards.

Roadside Attractions will release Stonewall, a drama about the 1969 Stonewall riots that started America’s Lgbt rights movement, on September 25, 2015.
Written by Jon Robin Baitz and directed by Roland Emmerich, both out gay men, the film stars Jeremy Irvine and newcomer Jonny Beauchamp, with Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Ron Perlman.
Emmerich, who also produced the film, says, “I was always interested and passionate about telling this important story, but I feel it has never been more timely than right now.” Less than 50 years ago, in 1969, being gay was considered a mental illness; gay people could not be employed by the government; it was illegal for gay people to congregate, and police brutality against gays went unchecked. Today, thanks to the events set in motion by the Stonewall riots, the gay rights movement continues to make incredible strides towards equality. In the past several weeks alone, the...

In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned homes from better times house the city’s most dangerous criminals. These are the grim, apocalyptic housing projects known as Brick Mansions. Unable to control the rampant crime, the authorities have walled Brick Mansions in, supposedly to protect the rest of the city from its lawless, violent, degenerate inhabitants.
In Brick Mansions, only the strong survive. In this dog-eat-dog society, the ruthless, urbane, and deadly drug kingpin Tremaine, played by RZA, is at the top of the foodchain. Undercover cop Damien Collier, played by Paul Walker, is determined to bring Tremaine to justice for killing his father years prior. Now, more than ever, the line between justice and revenge is razor thin. For Damien, every day is a fight against corruption and although it isn’t apparent at first, he finds an unlikely ally in one of the last good souls of Brick Mansions, Lino,...

RZA and Paul Walker (in one of his final performances) are featured in this first poster for Relativity Media’s Brick Mansions.
The film is directed by Camille Delamarre and written by Luc Besson and Bibi Naceri.
Paul Walker plays an undercover detective chasing a weapon of mass destruction that was stolen by a drug dealer in the ghetto known as Brick Mansions. He seeks help from the incredibly agile Lino, who knows Brick Mansions better than anyone and is the only person not cowering in fear of the drug dealers.
The movie is a remake of Luc Besson’s 2009 cult movie District 13.
Brick Mansions will be released in theaters on April 25, 2014.

It’s that time of year… network shows are going off the air (some for good) and the summer season is about to premiere. We decided to take a look at all of the season finales that have aired thus far and here are more of our staff picks for the best and the worst for the 2011-2012 season.
(Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn’t seen these season finales!)
Melody’s Picks:
Best: Being Human
What a fantastic season finale Being Human delivered! Josh, Aidan, and Sally were in the fight of their lives, giving us an even more exhilarating finale than in the first season and cliff-hangers that have us wanting more, more than ever before! Josh found himself at odds with Nora and Ray and it may have cost someone their life. Redemption comes at a cost, freedom comes at a cost, and that is what these...

The latest television effort to attempt to cross the pond is coming your way soon. SyFy's Being Human hopes to take the popular British title of the same name, and make it work for American audiences. For my money, this might turn out to be one of the better shots at "Americanizing" a show in quite some time, largely because after a while the original trailed off for me a bit. That may mean nothing in the true scheme of things, but I'm hopeful that another look at the show may prove even better.
For those unfamiliar, the show revolves around three, more or less normal, twenty-somethings trying to make their way through life... well, except that only one of them is more or less alive. It's the same old story. A vampire, a ghost, and a werewolf figuring out how to get by in this crazy, mixed-up world.

It has been a good little while since Zach Braff turned heads by making the jump from TV actor to multi-hyphenate writer-director-star of indie hit Garden State. Braff has been surprisingly quiet since but he'll be turning heads in Toronto this year, playing an entirely different sort of character in Deborah Chow's The High Cost of Living.
The dark - you might even say bleak - drama casts Braff as a drunk driver who runs down a heavily pregnant young woman. Panicking, he drives off, leaving her in the street and though she survives the ordeal, her unborn baby does not, though due to the trauma the doctor's are unable to induce birth and the woman is forced to continuing carrying the child she knows is dead inside of her. Stricken by guilt, Braff looks her up when sober and, without revealing his true identity, strikes up a relationship with her.

Syfy has renewed Warehouse 13 for a 13-episode second season. The first season finale airs September 22. The photo pictured is from tomorrow night’s episode “Duped” (where our heroes go to Las Vegas).
And Syfy picked up the Alphas project from another network (ABC maybe, but we don’t remember for sure anymore). Zak Penn (X-men) is scripting the 90-minute pilot.
The world will be ending soon on Syfy as well. The network has commissioned a six-episode mini-series from producers Bryan Singer and Andrew Deane (Masters Of Horror), scripted by Michael Petroni & Michael Bond. It’s another “Mayan calendar indicates apocalypse in 2012” premise. Guess that means it has to be broadcast before then!
As summer winds to an end, the late-night talk shows have almost run out of new celebrity guests we care about this week. Tuesday features Fangoria...

Established 1974! Our news column views rebranding.
Sci-fi TV
Effective tomorrow July 7, the Sci Fi Channel (a.k.a. Sci-fi and SciFi) rebrands itself. It’ll be, of course, Syfy (to recall Wifi), although we’ve also seen the new name styled SyFy and Syfy. This will take some getting used to, whatever one thinks of the merits of either phrase.
If you’re in New York City, you can visit Syfy’s “Imagination Playground,” a display of props and paraphernalia from the Channel’s programs at Rockefeller Center (just a few blocks over from the Starlog offices). It’s free and opens tomorrow (along with promotional appearances from such Syfy stars as Lou Diamond Phillips and Scare Tactics’ Tracy Morgan).
The very first official new Syfy series premieres tomorrow night (Tuesdays, 9 p.m.). It’s Warehouse 13, a sort of Men In Black meets The Librarian by way of Special Unit 2.
