Donald Trump is clearly many things, but one thing he’s not is a great orator, according to one of Britain’s great acting knights of the realm, Ian McKellen.
The stage and screen veteran, best known overseas for his role of Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, told The Times of London that he found the presidential hopeful “an absolute bewilderment.” McKellen told the paper:
“I haven’t seen him live. But he’s one of the worst public speakers there has ever been. Whether he’s reading a script or not, it’s so patent what he is.”
85-year-old McKellen, currently playing Falstaff on stage in the UK, said great powers of oratory may be thing of the past:
“I remember leaving my school [in Bolton] in the sixth form and cycling down to the town square to see [1950s Welsh Labour Party politician] Aneurin Bevan on the hustings without a microphone.

England and America are two countries separated by a common language but – as George Bernard Shaw would doubtless have added if he’d had a Sky TV package in the 1990s – joined by a common love of The Simpsons. Homer and co. are universal. It doesn’t matter if you buy your groceries at Walmart or do your big shop at Asda, The Simpsons speaks to us all.
Every so often though, what The Simpsons speaks to UK viewers is momentarily baffling – a reminder that wherever Springfield is, it’s not where we’re from. The same goes for other US sitcoms beloved in the UK. However much kinship we share, our rules are different. These are the American sitcom plots that introduced British TV fans to some of the curious legal differences between us.

Events recently took place across the UK to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the NHS – Britain’s National Health Service.
Prince of Wales Celebrates 70th Anniversary of NHS
Members of the Royal Family met NHS staff and patients in England, Scotland and Wales.
The Prince of Wales – already in Wales for his annual week of engagements to celebrate Welsh achievement and culture – started the day with a Garden Party at Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan hospital. Aneurin Bevan – the Welsh son of a coal miner and founder of the NHS – is a source of much pride in Wales.
In the afternoon, The Countess of Wessex attended a service at Westminster Abbey where a number of the NHS’s longest-serving members of staff were amongst the congregation.
At the final Royal event of the day, The Duke of Cambridge spoke to NHS staff and patients about their experience within the...
