1. Made in Abyss (2017– )

TV-14 | 325 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

A girl and her robot companion search for her mother, who's lost within a vast chasm.

Stars: Luci Christian, Brittany Lauda, Miyu Tomita, Mariya Ise

Votes: 15,259

Favorite by far. Best worldbuilding in an anime show. Best music by Kevin Penkin. Characters are interesting, specially on s2. This show respects the viewer, ignoring anime cliches and not using flashbacks or explaining stuff. The story moves only forward and there are far more mysteries than answers. It has everything I love. Rewatched a billion times

2. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009–2010)

TV-14 | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

Two brothers search for a Philosopher's Stone after an attempt to revive their deceased mother goes awry and leaves them in damaged physical forms.

Stars: Kent Williams, Iemasa Kayumi, Matthew Leonhart, Vic Mignogna

Votes: 197,628

A show in which every episode is more interesting than the last, with little to no exceptions. There's too many memorable moments to remember, the story and characters are all interesting. It knows how to handle comedy without being annoying. It's been n1 internationally forever for a reason. Rewatched many times even though its length

3. Steins;Gate (2011–2015)

TV-14 | 24 min | Animation, Comedy, Drama

After discovering time travel, a university student and his colleagues must use their knowledge of it to stop an evil organization and their diabolical plans.

Stars: Mamoru Miyano, Asami Imai, Kana Hanazawa, Ashly Burch

Votes: 73,508

A show that caught me from episode 1, some people say it starts slow, or 12 episodes in. I don't know what show they watched. This show doesn't treat you like a total retard, if you miss something, you're fucked. Top tier character interactions and development. Rewatchable too.

4. Gunbuster (1988–1989)

PG | 30 min | Animation, Action, Drama

A young pilot, daughter of a deceased space captain, is selected to pilot a gigantic robot as a key point of Earth's defense during a space war.

Stars: Noriko Hidaka, Rei Sakuma, Norio Wakamoto, Maria Kawamura

Votes: 2,013

Absolute banger. Comedy is top tier and has the best ending I've ever seen in any sci-fi or any show ever. I've always wanted to see a space sci-fi movie do anything monumental and nothing did it like this show.

5. Gunbuster 2: Diebuster (2004–2006)

27 min | Animation, Action, Comedy

A young girl leaves her home to be a space pilot. She meets top pilot Lal'C during a space monster attack and joins the Solar Defense Force.

Stars: Yukari Fukui, Maaya Sakamoto, Miyuki Sawashiro, Mitsuo Iwata

Votes: 658

Amazing sequel to Gunbuster, didn't expect to like it as much as I did the original, but it surpassed my expectations. What Gunbuster is to Evangelion, Diebuster is to Gurren Lagann. Over the top exaggerated scenes and ridiculous plot, classic Gainax/Trigger. And the ending had a high bar considering Gunbuster's ending, but they delivered a memorable ending.

6. Somali and the Forest Spirit (2020)

TV-14 | 24 min | Animation, Adventure, Drama

When a golem discovers a young human girl in the forest that he protects, the two set out on a journey in search of other humans, whom are considered to be nearly extinct.

Stars: Inori Minase, Daisuke Ono, Hiroki Nanami, Tatsuhisa Suzuki

Votes: 1,058

Made me cry like a total bitch. Parent-child relationships, robots or emotion-developing creatures and world exploration are all my weakness, this show mixes all of it together. Thank you author.

7. Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995–1996)

TV-MA | 24 min | Animation, Action, Drama

A teenage boy finds himself recruited as a member of an elite team of pilots by his father.

Stars: Megumi Ogata, Megumi Hayashibara, Kotono Mitsuishi, Spike Spencer

Votes: 85,370

Classic. Love the original show (maybe not eps 25-26). EoE is great, monumental ending scene with the music. Rebuild films are masterpieces from a production standpoint, story wise, I love them too. Music and visuals are unreal in all of these. A 25 year long story that concludes with a great ending.

8. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (2021– )

TV-14 | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

A 34-year-old underachiever gets run over by a bus, but his story isn't over. Reincarnated as an infant, he'll embark on an epic adventure.

Stars: Yumi Uchiyama, Tomokazu Sugita, Amber Lee Connors, Ai Kakuma

Votes: 19,876

Chef's kisses. This show actually understands human emotions and touches on stuff that other shows don't dare address. Literally the only bearable Isekai OBJECTIVELY. Time moves forward and the "shonen" boring stuff of powering up isn't all that important, istead focusing on character development.

9. Beastars (2019– )

TV-MA | 23 min | Animation, Crime, Drama

In a world of anthropomorphic animals, a reclusive wolf's complicated relationship with a kindly rabbit is tested by a classmate's murder, a charismatic deer's influence, and his own burgeoning predatory instincts.

Stars: Chikahiro Kobayashi, Jonah Scott, Lara Jill Miller, Griffin Puatu

Votes: 12,378

Visually, it stands out. Banger of an ost, the way it accompanies a great story too. This show has passion. Both main characters feel very real. Season 1 was amazing, can't say the same for season 2. I hope it gets better.

10. KILL la KILL (2013–2014)

TV-14 | 25 min | Animation, Action, Comedy

A young girl arrives at a school of superhumans to find out the truth behind her father's murder.

Stars: Ami Koshimizu, Aya Suzaki, Toshihiko Seki, Shin'ichirô Miki

Votes: 16,812

Over the top, ultra exageration of everything. There are no limits in this show, Trigger at its best. I'll always have a place rent free for this show in my head. You don't have to explain stuff as long as it's amazing and fun.

11. Hellsing Ultimate (2006–2012)

Not Rated | 50 min | Animation, Action, Fantasy

The vampire Alucard, his master Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, and his newly sired ward Seras Victoria, try to protect England from a war-crazed SS-Major who seeks to start an eternal war with his vampire army.

Stars: Katie Gray, Crispin Freeman, Victoria Harwood, Ralph Lister

Votes: 26,766

Classic. I formed a tradition of watching this on winters next to the chimney (if I have one t the time). Production wise this show is a monster. Similar to Kill la Kill in the sense of just doing things because 'epic'

12. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (2022–2023)

TV-14 | 22 min | Animation, Action, Drama

In an era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system, Suletta Mercury, from the remote planet Mercury, transfers to the Asticassia School of ... See full summary »

Stars: E.A. Castillo, Lynn, Kana Ichinose, Yôhei Azakami

Votes: 1,294

Surprisingly good character dynamic. Never watched any Gundam before, watched it because I thought the protagonist looked adorable. Prologue is a 10/10 standalone episode and the show develops characters really well, like, REALLY well.

13. Attack on Titan (2013–2023)

TV-MA | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

After his hometown is destroyed and is traumatized, young Eren Jaeger vows to cleanse the earth of the giant humanoid Titans that have brought humanity to the brink of extinction.

Stars: Jessie James Grelle, Bryce Papenbrook, Trina Nishimura, Yûki Kaji

Votes: 512,234

If you want someone to start with anime, this is the one you recommend. I'd only say S3 part 1 is unbearably boring and s3 part 2 last few episodes. I heavily dislike lore dumping. To me, answering all my questions and leaving me with no mysteries is, for a show, suicide. Other than those 2 things, this show is pretty solid in production and story. Season 1 animation is unrivaled.

14. Eureka Seven (2005–2006)

TV-MA | 25 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

14-year-old Renton joins the rebel GekkoState ship, co-pilots the TypeZero with the mysterious Eureka, and unknowingly becomes part of a grand scheme.

Stars: Yûko Sanpei, Keiji Fujiwara, Kaori Nazuka, Johnny Yong Bosch

Votes: 3,305

I watched it as an adult and found it nostalgic for some reason. Maybe because of the formatting and the animation style, which is very 2000's. The protagonists are to this day my favorite couple, the characters are mostly interesting and the show is very relaxing and present an interesting world and conflicts.

15. Baccano! (2007–2008)

TV-MA | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

A crazy fantasy caper involving alchemists, immortals, gangsters, outlaws and an elixir of immortality, spread over several decades.

Stars: Michael C. Pizzuto, J. Michael Tatum, Caitlin Glass, Akemi Kanda

Votes: 12,665

Weirdly rewatchable. I forget almost everything about this show, and then watch it again due to how short it is and absolutely love it. This has happened 3 times at least. It's very entertaining but I can't really explain why. I think visually this show is on another level but I don't really remember haha.

16. Kino's Journey (2003)

Not Rated | Animation, Adventure, Drama

Young world-weary sharpshooter girl Kino and her talking inquisitive motorcycle Hermes travel around her unusual world, visiting various city-states for three days each to learn about their culture, history and ruling philosophy.

Stars: Ai Maeda, Ryuji Aigase, Kelli Cousins, Cynthia Martinez

Votes: 3,245

If you feel nostalgia towards the 2000's style, this is it. If you like episodic shows that explore different places, this is it. If you like having questions unanswered, this is it. I loved it, only hope there was more of it.

17. Erased (2016)

TV-14 | 22 min | Animation, Crime, Drama

29-year-old Satoru Fujinuma is sent back in time 18 years to prevent the events leading to his mother's death, which began with a series of kidnappings while he was in 5th grade.

Stars: Shinnosuke Mitsushima, Tao Tsuchiya, Minami Takayama, Ben Diskin

Votes: 58,290

I remember saying to myself "This is the best first episode I have ever watched" when i finished episode 1. This show had me. It's sad that the ending was disappointing, but the rest of the show still lingers in my memory for how amazing the story was and how tense it made me feel.

18. One Punch Man (2015– )

TV-PG | 24 min | Animation, Action, Comedy

The story of Saitama, a hero that does it just for fun & can defeat his enemies with a single punch.

Stars: Makoto Furukawa, Kaito Ishikawa, Max Mittelman, Zach Aguilar

Votes: 185,939

It's hard to find better animation than this show presents on season 1. Sadly, I had to drop season 2 only 3-4 episodes in from how boring and low quality it got. It may get good later but it's too late for me. I've seen greedy companies reducing budget and killing shows enough.

19. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (2016)

TV-MA | 23 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

A large group of survivors seek shelter while travelling on a train after their station was attacked by aggressive, undead creatures called Kabane.

Stars: Roger Craig Smith, Robbie Daymond, Keith Silverstein, Ben Diskin

Votes: 6,571

For how much I HATE japanese folklore and customs, it says a lot that I actually liked this show. A feudal japanese style to it mixed with Snowpiercer, I just can't hate a big fucking train called "The Iron Fortress", even a chimp would have neuron activation when hearing that.

20. Violet Evergarden (2018)

TV-14 | 24 min | Animation, Drama, Family

In the aftermath of a great war, Violet Evergarden, a young female ex-soldier, gets a job at a writers' agency and goes on assignments to create letters that can connect people.

Stars: Yui Ishikawa, Erika Harlacher, Raissa Bueno, Aya Endô

Votes: 29,641

Loved some episodes, Hated some others. Episodic episodes where Violet writes letters for people are AMAZING. Then episodes that center around her backstory are ultra boring generic mush. The episode with the mother and daughter in the mansion is a 10/10 movie on its own. The soldier, scribe and theater author episodes are also top tier.

21. Little Witch Academia (2017)

TV-Y7 | 25 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

Akko enrolls at the Luna Nova Witchcraft Academy. She's not the best student, but her bright attitude is the key to her and her friends' success.

Stars: Megumi Han, Erica Mendez, Alexis Nichols, Fumiko Orikasa

Votes: 4,048

Great happy show to warm your heart. Recommended for children. Classic animation style by Studio Trigger.

22. Steins;Gate 0 (2018)

TV-14 | 30 min | Animation, Drama, Mystery

Mad scientist Okabe struggles to recover from past failure and tests a new artificial intelligence

Stars: Mamoru Miyano, J. Michael Tatum, Monica Rial, Tyson Rinehart

Votes: 11,394

Liked it. It wasn't as good as Steins;Gate but that is a tall order, it was fun. Maho's character and her relationship to Christina is top tier though.

23. Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious (2019)

TV-14 | 23 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

The goddess Rista summons a hero to help her in her hard mode video game world. The hero, Seiya, is exceptional in every way, but is incredibly cautious!.

Stars: Yûichirô Umehara, Aki Toyosaki, Jamie Marchi, Anthony Bowling

Votes: 3,629

One of the few shows that actually made me laugh. Japanese humour is just not it for me, but this show is better than that. I wonder if there's gonna be a season 2, I'd watch it.

24. Elfen Lied (2004)

TV-MA | 24 min | Animation, Action, Drama

Two university students come across a seemingly harmless girl named Lucy, unaware that she's actually a mutant serial killer with a split personality.

Stars: Sanae Kobayashi, Chihiro Suzuki, Mamiko Noto, Sam Saletta

Votes: 36,939

This was my first anime show when I was a teen, funny. I rewatched it as an adult and didn't really like it that much, but it was still fine. There's good things and bad things about it, but the intro is still one of the best.

25. Black Lagoon (2006)

TV-MA | 25 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

A Japanese businessman, captured by modern-day pirates, is written off and left for dead by his company. Tired of the corporate life, he opts to stick with the mercenaries that kidnapped him, becoming part of their gang.

Stars: Megumi Toyoguchi, Daisuke Namikawa, Brad Swaile, Maryke Hendrikse

Votes: 17,940

Watched it twice, badass girls with guns does something for me. Story wise it was fine, I like the feeling of this show more than the story. The characters are fine, I'd say Rock and Balalaika are my favorites.

26. Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (1990–2003)

TV-14 | 25 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

A teen acrobat of mysterious origins and a young inventor find themselves entangled in a sinister plot that involves the fate of the world.

Stars: Noriko Hidaka, Nathan Parsons, James Arnold Taylor, Guy Roberts

Votes: 2,048

Interesting watch, I wanted to check what Gainax did before Eva, and was surprised of how much Eva took from this show. It's very aimed towards children but then it changes drastically. It seems to have had issues in production. It also had some visual issues here and there. But it was fun overall, with a good ending. The music is great, some of it you will recognize from Evangelion and the rebuilds.

27. Parasyte: The Maxim (2014–2015)

TV-MA | 22 min | Animation, Action, Drama

17-year-old Shinichi Izumi is partially infected by a Parasyte, monsters that butcher and consume humans. He must learn to co-exist with the creature if he is to survive both the life of a Parasyte and a human as part monster, part person.

Stars: Aya Hirano, Nobunaga Shimazaki, Rinka H.B.B., Brittney Karbowski

Votes: 48,793

The best thing I can remember from this show is the song "Next to you". Melody in a song is the main ingredient, and this song is the main dish. The show started good and ended very boring. It was still good though, this song carried the show.

28. Re: Creators (2017)

I feel weird about this show. I liked it, but there were parts that felt bland. I kinda hated how much Meteora talks, she has like 80% of this show's voice lines, but I ended up loving it. I don't know if it was brainwashing or what but I liked it. Also I don't remember much other than her character, maybe because the whole fucking show is her talking haha.

29. Trigun (1998)

Vash the Stampede is the most infamous outlaw on the planet Gunsmoke and with a 60 billion double dollar price on his head the most sought after.

I don't remember much about this show, watched very early in my life. But it's main message (about the spider and the butterfly) stuck with me like glue. I'm plannning on rewatching it sometime.

Votes: 24,055

Loved season 1, absolutely loved it, probably an 8/10. Season 2 destroyed this show, I had to force myself to watch it, second part of the season had to watch in 2x speed, first time I had to do that. The beginning with the Greed dude and the Gluttony dude couldn't have been more out of the place for that show. Super japanese cliche characters, boring as hell.

Stars: Satoshi Hino, Chris Guerrero, Yumi Hara, Masayuki Katô

Votes: 13,729

Am I supposed to like a show that bores me to death in episode 1 with almost nothing happening at all? I've seen enough modern One Piece to fall for that again. Forced myself to watch at least 3 episodes, still bored me.

41. The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash (2024– )

Stars are everything, granting abilities to Tamers. So when Ivy was born without one, her village took it as an ill omen.

Stars: Daiki Yamashita, Justin Briner, Nobuhiko Okamoto, Ayane Sakura

Votes: 78,460

I like everything that isn't Deku or the League of Villains. Side characters and other villains are great. Bakugo should be the protagonist. Also Studio Bones fell, FMAB and Eureka Seven are one thing, but this show is surprisingly cheap in animation compared to those two. I love this world so much that I read the manga, was super hyped for Gentle and La Brava, and was shit in the show. Dropped.

Stars: Mayumi Tanaka, Akemi Okamura, Laurent Vernin, Tony Beck

Votes: 235,419

I just can't. Peak One Piece ended in Ennies Lobby. From Water Seven to Marineford, this show was great, after that, it's just pain. The characters and the story is still fun, but Toei is just evil man. The visual style got butchered, it was so fun on the beginning, now it's bland and boring. After the time skip, the characters design went from a 10 to a 5.

45. Black Clover (2017–2021)

TV-PG | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

Asta and Yuno were abandoned together at the same church and have been inseparable since. As children, they promised that they would compete against each other to see who would become the next Emperor Magus.

Stars: Dallas Reid, Jill Harris, Cris George, Christopher Sabat

Votes: 34,563

I wasn't bothered at all by the screaming protagonist like other people was. My problem with this show is how it lied to me. First 2 episode are movie quality animation, after that, it's some of the worst quality of animation I've ever seen. Comparable to modern One Piece.
