Here (2024)
Watch Life Unfold
That is what this movie is really about. Can you sit for 100 minutes to watch it happen on screen? Can you stay... here? Maybe not, especially if you have trouble sitting for even 10 minutes to watch life unfold off-screen.
You will love this movie if you know what you're getting into. Just watch the trailer. It indicates that the movie will require some patience, but the payoff is worth it. It's also by the guy who made Contact (1997) and Cast Away (2000), so you can be confident that this is a director who knows what he's doing. He wants to uplift you!
I admit, there was a point in the movie where I asked "Where is this heading?" and fidgeted in my seat. But, when I let go and trusted in the unfolding, my eyes stayed wet.
After letting go and relaxing into the experience, I could see the best parts of my mother in the main character played by Robin Wright. This was a beautiful treat! Plus this movie was released on her birthday! After exiting the theater, I sent her a copy of the graphic novel that inspired this movie.
Finally, a movie that made me ache with nostalgia and uplifted my soul. It also reminded me to love and respect my parents despite their foibles. Wright is my favorite supporting actress in this since Patricia Arquette in Boyhood (2014).
Thank you cast and crew!
Halo (2022)
Good visual effects, forced story
The way the visual effects mimic the video game is impressive but they got too artsy with the story. Focus more on the fight. The added emotional elements are forced. War itself is emotional enough.
The Green Knight (2021)
Last A24 Film I'll Watch.
LIke other A24 films, this film focuses more on the look and feel of the story than the actual story. Also, up until the last minute and the reveal, it left me feeling empty. I think there is an emptiness to many A24 films.
Harsh criticism aside, this film did look nice and have a distinct and eerie feel. I also enjoyed the reveal at the end, but the same feeling I experienced could have been accomplished in a short film.
I lazed around on the couch watching this, feel asleep for a few minutes on and off, and entered into some dream like states on an overcast Sunday. It's a good nap movie for a cloudy day I suppose.
North Hollywood (2021)
Nice story about teenage friendship and faith
This is a story that shows how friendships are challenged as times change and how faith is summoned and persevered when the ones you love most doubt you.
Nomadland (2020)
Boring and Depressing Film
I watched this with an open mind and was patient. Thirty minutes in my patience turned into utter boredom. Perhaps this story would have made for a decent blog post or article but it didn't work as a movie for me.
There is one nice scene when one of the nomads opens up about his son's suicide but that scene comes toward the end and does not contribute to the main character's story arc (which is almost nonexistent).
It seems like this movie only got traction because it deals with a political topic (homelessness), it features a prominent actress, it was written and directed by a female, and because not many interesting movies were released in 2020 due to the reaction to covid.
Again, the movie itself is a bore. The main character is miserable and depressing to follow. I recommend watching something else. Into The Wild is a good alternative.
