Inside Look: The Assassination of Gianni Versace - American Crime Story (2017)
Cody Fern Sensational and Robbed of Emmy Nomination
Like many other people, I found Cody Fern's performance as David Madson one of the greatest portrayals I've ever seen either on TV or in the movies. Yes, Darren Criss was sensational, but Cody Fern carrie,d through the sheer force of his acting ability, episodes eight through four, the key episodes of the series, largely because the relationship between Andrew and David wascone that had to be surmised, since so little is known about it.
How Cody was able to disguise his Australian accent and take on that of a small town boy from Wisconsin blew me away. That he was not nominated for an Emmy is outrageous. His performance was infinitely superior to that of Ricky Martin's, just as one example.
At least I'm very glad that he's picked up two major roles since his performance here, based on how incredibly good he was in this series.
The Wolverine (2013)
One of the most boring, hard- to- understand movies I have ever seen. Totally terrible!
This movie was impossible to follow. The actors seemed wooden, too. Who was who was almost entirely beyond me. If anyone can tell me what the point of this movie was,I will thank them.
A HUGE disappointment, since I have watched the X-Men movies to date. Perhaps I should skip the other Wolverine movie, but it has to be better than this one!
Bringing in Magneto and Xavier at the end did nothing to save this piece of junk from itself.
I reveled in X-Men 1, 2, 3, and the new one, "Days of Future Past."
Saw Wolverine on Comcast,as with X-Men 1, 2, and 3. I want to re-watch the new one at a cheap theater, because it was so good. This one here, however, belongs in the sci-fi movie hall of shame.
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Impossible to follow or enjoy--what a big disappointment.
I think some moviegoers wrote positive reviews of this horrid picture just to show they belong to some intellectual elite, which they do not. (Written by graduate of a "name" law school, with an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science, not to brag, just to show I am not particularly dumb.)
I lost so much interest in this boring debacle that I almost walked out--I have, literally, never come close to doing that with any movie before, and I see at least 10 or so a month.
In the hands of a Woody Allen, it might have been tolerable, but not so here.
I am glad it was a box office no-show,despite its appealing name. Thank God some people apparently spread the word of how bad it truly is.
Rome (2005)
Great
An incredibly great, but half fictional or speculative, retelling of the story of the founding of the Roman Empire and of the preexisting Roman Republic's demise. this series was-is more eminently watchable than any other multi-year series I have ever seen on TV, on any network.
And, if one has any intellectual curiosity, the series provides a vast framework for further reading and investigation.
the BIG negative is the treatment by IMDb of the second actor playing Octavian. The first actor, depicting the very young Octavian, Max Pirkis, simply did not mature fast enough to be a credible Octavian in his late 20s in the second, and final, season. As a a result, he was replaced by the gifted Simon Cowell. In my opinion, IMDb's biography of Cowell (out of spite?)is a humiliating two or three lines. Cowell proved himself to be simply an amazing Octavian in Season Two; nevertheless, one can wallow in this tale to both his or her amusement and intellectual benefit.
Oblivion (2013)
Easy: One of the most awful, totally incomprehensible movies I have ever seen in my life! Incredibly stupid!
I will repeat what I said above in my Summary and add a bit more. This movie is beyond terrible. Tom Cruise should get a new job--perhaps a commentator on Scientology radio?--and forget acting.
I am not a dope--an HLS grad--but this thing was so out of it that any dissatisfied viewers (I hope there were many, despite the amazingly high rating the unscientific IMDb poll gave to this unfathomable work) should join in a class action to have their money refunded and obtain extra damages for emotional distress.
Not only was Cruise poor, but Morgan Freeman was even worse. The female leads were so bad it is hard for me to imagine how they were chosen in the first place. ETC. Avoid even on TV at all costs--this mess would probably, in fact, be even more incoherent on TV or streaming.
The Tudors (2007)
What's New?
Well, historically, he was a prick, so what do you have that's new? Henry had six wives and murdered two of them on false charges. Compared to the Roman emperors such as Caligula and Nero, though, he was a sweetheart. I don't see one thing of substance you have added. Since you like historical fiction, not history, it is apparent, why don't you read Harlequin Romances? I guess history has to turn out the way you would like it to for you to enjoy it. In other words, you prefer to live in a fantasy world. Henry VIIi was a prick? So are many current rulers and so will be many future ones.
Since you like fairy tales, why not stick to Tolkien and the like and leave true history alone, as with the comment about dear "litle Bess"? She was, in fact, one mean dame. She had to be, and she succeeded and then some. I think The Horse Whisperer would be more to your taste than an honest account of history.
