I have made no secret in my previous reviews that while I loved seasons 1-4, I had mixed feelings about season 5 and think very little of season 6. I felt from the beginning of season 5 that the casting wasn't right for most of the characters, Princess Margaret being a notable exception.
The biggest issue, however, is that Queen Elizabeth II wore the crown for nearly 71 years and this show covers 75 years (not including flashbacks). I understand that the whole Diana saga was a major deal, but the fact remains that the time from when Prince Charles met Diana until her death was only a period of about 20 years. Even if Charles and Diana had remained happily married to this day, Diana would never have worn THE Crown. She would have worn A crown, but not THE Crown and so she is not the subject of this show. It was ridiculous of the writer, director, show runner, producers, and anyone else involved to devote so much time to Diana (without a head meant for the crown in sight, much of the time!) that they had to somehow pretend that the last 19 years of Queen Elizabeth II's life didn't even happen!
The acting in this particular episode wasn't horrible. It was comparable to the rest of this cast's tenure... Though that isn't really saying much. The writing, however, was terrible and the entire episode felt extremely rushed and disjointed. If they had ended with the Queen abdicating or dying not long after Charles and Camilla got married, it might have worked (and been about as historically accurate as the rest of seasons 5-6 at least) but to just end it the way they did was laziness in the extreme.
I really wish they wouldn't have made whatever changes in leadership they did between seasons 4 and 5 because the new group doesn't seem to have any clue what they're doing, from the across to the directors to the writers to the crew, and it is painfully obvious.
