Låt den rätte komma in (2008)
Best vampire film I've seen to date
I absolutely loved this film. While it is somehow tagged as horror, I would consider it more to lean on the drama part of it's classification - of course everything is subjective but I found very few scenes to actually be typical of the horror film genre.
That is not to say the film doesn't have its scary moments or suspense, but it is, how would I say it, a very subdued experience if all you're used to are the all too common jump scares and slasher tendencies of modern horror films.
There are few other things that might rub some other viewers the wrong way as well; At points, its pacing feels very slow. The supporting cast are largely paper thin as characters, I personally wish their stories would have been elaborated upon a bit more.
Those thing aside, this is an amazing production with great performances from the main cast, and definitely some of the best child actor performances in recent memory as many others have noted. The setting of 1980's Sweden is done very well, adding to the overall feel of the film.
I would consider this a must see film for all fans of vampire myths, this film certainly does add its own, worthy chapter to it.

A mediocre film with impressive musical numbers
To start off, I have to say it took a good while for this movie to grow on me. Here's why; The story is really bland. Like really really bland. Not to give too much away, a girl loses her memory and falls in love with a boy, with a twist relating to her memory loss. It is not an outright bad premise, but the way it is handled in the film is rather jarring, which is not at all helped by the fact that some of the acting is at the very least awkward to watch - I can't really tell if it is meant to be that way, since the movie is rather lighthearted for the most part.
However, where the movie really shines, is its musical numbers that are either altogether new arrangements or cover versions of famous Finnish songs - and the choreography and camera work that accompanies them is rather impressive. I'm not a professional dancer so maybe I am easy to impress, but the cast in my opinion performs the musical numbers well - and most of them actually perform the vocals themselves as well. As an added bonus, many of the songs and other scenes have artists in background cameos from the artist that made the song or made it famous - try to notice all of them!
As far as musicals go, the musical part of this film is solid; I personally enjoyed almost all of the new interpretations of modern classics, the performances are great and imaginative. However, the occasionally bad acting and in my opinion poorly fleshed out framing story drag this movie down somewhat. It is worth watching for the musical scenes alone, and the story sort of grows on you after awhile as well, despite its flaws.
Battleship (2012)
If you like sci-fi action films, give it a chance!
First off - this movie is your standard 2 hour action romp, and in that, it in my opinion does well. If you have trouble accepting an excuse of a plot, that lasers do not work that way, and that aliens want specifically our planet even though there are much better planets nearby that wont fight back, well, this film just is not for you. If you expect anything else than big explosions, lame puns and a simple storyline, you will be disappointed.
The key to enjoyment of this film is simply to not take this movie seriously at all, flick the critical thinking off switch in your brain and just enjoy it for what it is - an Independence Day -esque battle against aliens that want to conquer Earth for whatever reason. Again, if this is too much for you, just stand back and leave the movie back on the shelf... If you don't, don't say I didn't warn you.
As for myself, I found the movie well enough entertaining to use it for passing a couple of hours on a Friday evening and did not regret it. The visuals are easily what you would expect from a movie such as this - adequate-to-top-notch CGI (even if the designs themselves were corny), plenty of visually impressive explosions and of course not all of the things are realistic - we're talking about aliens here.
The plot... Many people chide this movie for the plot, but come on, reading the premise, what do you expect? To me the plot is just an excuse for the action and I have nothing to complain about the action scenes - explosions, tactical combat, more explosions, fun times were had by all that were not invading aliens.
If there's anything I'd fault this movie for it is the acting. Or an actor. Two actors. Generally the acting isn't that bad, but Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgård chew the scenery, so to speak, and hard. It's probably not their fault, just how the characters were written, but neither really don't have the action hero charisma to pull it off - if we had Bruce Willis or Samuel L. Jackson in the lead role, this would of been a 10/10 movie for me. Also, Rihanna surprised me in this film - I'm not a fan of her music, but she would make a pretty decent actor if she ever quits singing.
