Matrix, Mad Max, Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man, Dune, Star Wars, along with a few other Sci-fi Flicks served as the reference shots for the team that worked on this...only to make a mockery of the genre...
When the best acting in a film is by Deepika Padukone (She isn't bad in this thankfully), it shows the calibre of the acting in general. The set design and costumes are a confused lot, at times reminding of Total Recall and at times Mad Max. Even a few villanous henchmen reminds us of the Harkonnens or the famiky of Immortan Joe. Some of the characters in the script were so out of sync that the comedy was jarring. It didn't help that the hindi dubbing was atrocious.
The music speaks of a poorly thought out score with Punjabi beats intermingling with Bhajans, sprinkled with something like Hans Zimmer (and surprisingly similar to his score of Dune).
The story has a lot of gaps and isn't completely thought through. If water is scarce and no plants anywehere, then how come a lady is merrily having a betel leaf. Or no surprise on the face of Prabhas when he sees gallons of water for the first time. Even the dystopian world created as the complex has a lot of idiosyncracies. Disha Patani as an eye candy cameo just comes across as superflous.
However, the film does manage to entertain in parts, especially where Indian gods have been made into celestial powerful beings, leading towards some pretty decent fight scenes. The battle scene between Prabhas and AB is one of the better ones I have seen in an Indian film.
It is evident that most actors in this film aren't good with green screens or VFX protocols as some of the expressions and movements did not really sync with the scene. A bit sad considering this is the most expensive Indian film ever made.
A valiant effort by Nag Ashwin but what could have been a benchmark, comes across as basically a Pinboard.
