El secreto de sus ojos es una película muy intensa que vale la pena mirar, especialmente para las personas a quienes les gustan los programas que se tratan de los crímenes. Cada personaje tiene una personalidad distinta y la manera en que se relacionan es fascinante por la buena actuación. Los elementos de misterio y suspenso juntos con un amor tácito que son filmadas de varios ángulos utilizando varias técnicas resultan en crear una película bien hecha que es intrigante de ver. Desde el momento que empiece el filme no se puede quitar los ojos de la pantalla. Juan José Campanella maravillosamente incorpora giros inesperados a lo largo de la película. Está llena de tensión de varios tipos que hace que no se puede mover hasta el final. ¡Pues al final todavía no podrá moverse porque termina tan chocante! Es una película buenísima que definitivamente se debe mirar.

City of God tells the story of two young boys growing up in a violent neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro: Lil Ze who becomes a gangster and Rocket who becomes a photographer. It is not an easy movie to watch as it addresses some very difficult themes. Throughout the film we see horrible gang violence that exists in the world among children as young as five and six years old. The children in the city are exposed to guns and drugs before they even learn how to read and it becomes the only thing they know. The violence and treachery unfold in what is filmed as a party-like atmosphere, creating a palpable sense of indifference among the gangsters for the viewer. The movie was filmed on the streets of Rio with hand-held cameras and a cast that includes many unprofessional actors which makes it appear incredibly authentic, allowing the viewer to understand the reality of the situation. Although the film makes it clear that such a cycle of violence is difficult to escape, it gives the viewer some sense of hope in the resolution of Rocket's story when he proves that escape is a viable possibility.

El Norte es una representación realística de cruzar la frontera entre México y los Estados Unidos ilegalmente. La película se establece bien con la necesidad de Rosa y Enrique de salir de Guatemala para escapar el destino del resto de su familia. Los muestra en su viaje a través de México hacia Los Angeles donde van a quedar y el espectador puede entender mejor el gran anhelo de llegar a los Estados Unidos. Los hermanos soportan circunstancias horribles para cruzar la frontera que provoquen sentimientos de incomodidad y shock a las medidas que están dispuestos a aguantar para conseguir esta supuesta vida mejor en el norte. Los personajes principales aprenden que hay que luchar para sobrevivir y tener buena vida en cualquier lugar que viven, sea Guatemala o Los Angeles. Es una historia más o menos bien hecha y yo le doy un 7/10.

Tres Américas cuenta la historia de una joven desafiante nacida en Argentina pero criada en los Estados Unidos. Después de una matanza, la joven América tiene que mudarse hacia Argentina y vivir con su abuela que no conoce para nada. La historia puede ser muy buena, pero esta película falta algunas cosas. Primero que nada la actuación no fue impresionante y me distraía de la historia. Además, cuando hay un cambio en el actitud y el comportamiento de América, no sabemos porque. No es obvio de donde viene ese cambio, solo vemos que de repente América comienza de ayudar a su abuela y estar feliz de vivir en Argentina y asistir a la escuela allí. Creo que esta historia puede crear una buena película, pero el director ha fallecido en cumplir este. Yo le doy un 5/10.

Machuca sigue las vidas de Gonzalo y Pedro, dos chicos en un colegio de inglés en Chile. Aunque es un filme admirado por muchos, especialmente los chilenos, a mí no me lo gustó mucho. Es una buena historia que cuenta la dificultad de mantener una amistad a través de las fronteras de raza, pero se mueve muy lentamente al punto de que me aburría a veces. Para mí el punto a favor fue al final. Cuando el ejército entra en la población de Machuca, cambia la manera de filmar desde película hacía más documental. El montaje e iluminación cambia para que parezca más real y tiene un efecto impactante para el espectador. Aunque este me parece el único parte bueno, todavía creo que mirar este filme vale la pena porque puede dar un nuevo perspectivo en cómo la dictadura de Chile afectaba a las vidas de su población.

Cuando su abuela enferma muere, Carlitos decide irse en un viaje hacia Los Angeles donde su madre ha vivido por cuatro años. La misma luna cuenta la historia preciosa de este niño de nueve años y la búsqueda para su madre. Al espectador le encantan los personajes casi inmediatamente y el crecimiento individual junto con el desarrollo de las relaciones son excelentes. Además el montaje es fantástico en que la película sigue las historias de Carlitos y Rosario a la vez. Directora Patricia Riggen es conocida por su talento en hacer cortes y este no es una excepción. Desde el principio cuando se ve los dos preparando para el día y el momento de la llamada de teléfono cuando puede ver los alrededores de ambos hasta el final, los cortes son abundantes y perfectamente escogidos. Sería difícil de encontrar un aspecto mal de esta película. ¡Yo le doy un 10/10!

Magic realism is a difficult genre to put into film, but director Alfonso Arau does a great job of it in Como agua para chocolate. This novel-based film tells the story of Tita who is forbidden to marry because of an old family tradition. She is in love with Pedro who eventually marries Tita's sister to be close to his true love. One of the many elements of magic realism included in the film is Tita's cooking. She can make people happy, sad or sick by the emotion that she puts into cooking her food and there are many episodes where we see this happen. Each of these majestic events, including the incidents with the food and others, are made in a way that they don't appear entirely impossible. They do come off a bit strange at times, but there is meaning behind each event and it is clear during and/or after. With a classic plot line of forbidden love, Como agua para chocolate comes together nicely in the end with elements of magic realism that ultimately add to the film.

María llena eres de gracia sigue la aventura de una joven embarazada y desesperada. Para conseguir dinero, la colombiana decide hacerse mula de drogas. La fortaleza y valentía que representa a lo largo del filme son increíbles. Se conducta en una manera admirable en cómo se defiende y defiende a sus amigas cuando están viajando desde Colombia hasta Nueva York. Aunque hacerse mula de drogas no es una decisión prudente, es la única decisión mala que María hace. La película representa las medidas drásticas que una mujer que está en estado tomará para conseguir una vida mejor para su hijo. Contiene momentos felices, tristes, tensos y más que hagan el filme uno que vale la pena mirar.

Because of a lack of funding, Nueba Yol is not a very well made film. Although the main character, Balbuena, is quite likable, the film is lacking in multiple elements. There is a bit of confusion as to how certain events come about and a good amount left unanswered at the end. The concept of the movie, a Dominican wanting to move to New York and find a new life, is good and it is relatable in that many people find their dreams turn out differently than expected, but it is not well carried out. As a Dominican film it isn't bad and many Dominicans love it, but showing it to an American audience will evoke a less than desirable response.

The journey of Ernesto "Che" Guevara and Alberto Granado from Argentina to Miami is chronicled in Diarios de motocicleta as we see them meet new people, learn about different ways of life and truly begin to grow into men. Director Walter Salles does a fantastic job of capturing what the adventure truly must have been like through impeccable cinematography. It is clear that the making of this movie was quite arduous as the scenes from each new place they visit are real. The viewer is able to truly feel involved in the journey as the men travel we see each new place. A favorite scene is at the Incan ruins in Machu Picchu. Here we see a young Guevara in a beautiful place beginning to develop into the future revolutionary Che that we all know today. The music, editing, acting and cinematography all pull this film together brilliantly forcing me to give it 5 stars. A must see film!

La Historia Oficial is a wonderful film that tells a sad story based on true events. The characters are believable and likable, especially Alicia. She begins as a well-to-do Argentine school teacher who has always accepted what she has been told as true, but as the movie progresses, so does her curiosity and openness to the fact that the "official story" she has been told may not be the truth. The innocence and ignorance of 5 year old Gaby is manifested beautifully throughout the movie through her singing of an old Argentine hymn about La Guerra Sucia. Every element of the film comes together perfectly and it provides an appropriate introduction to the sad history of Argentina. I rate this movie a 9 out of 10 and a definite must see.

Tony Manero is without a doubt the worst film I have ever had the misfortune of viewing. What appears at first to be a funny movie about a man obsessed with a disco dancing character from Saturday Night Fever quickly becomes a horrible film about a man who appears to be a serial killer. The main character repeatedly commits crimes that he is never punished for and there are multiple scenes portraying terribly uncomfortable sexual acts between unattractive people. It is not often that the main character in a movie is difficult to like, but in Tony Manero he goes beyond unlikeable. There is not one redeeming quality about him, his actions or even the film as a whole.
