Dark Water (2005)
Surprisingly Good
I didn't expect to be too impressed with this film, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially because of it's supposed "flaws". This film is not gory, it doesn't have that stupid jerky camera technique that is ruining modern horror, there are no real knee-jerk scares of the bogeyman sort. Instead this really Gothic styled movie slowly introduces very real characters who behave like real people (i.e. the kid was not just a prop and also wasn't precocious/super-smart, the skeezy landlord who seems a lot like mine), makes you care about them and then gradually pours on the creepy. I love horror movies, but the gore fests just make me laugh. This little PG-13 flick finds a way to work and be suspenseful and sad without being over the top.
The Omen (2006)
The Omen could have been much better
Have you seen the preview for this movie? If so you can save your money. Other than a couple of "BOO!" suspense moments, most of what is to be had here is contained in the preview. The rest of the movie is chock full of the jumpy camera work that seems to ruin all horror movies these days, and the relationship between the leads is stiff and formal. Damien at least looks creepy, but really, he doesn't do much. The only actor to stand out is Mia Farrow as the creepy nanny, her acting and the strength of the original concept are the only things that really keep this film going. Other than that, Liev Schrieber's chase for answers is really more "Indiana Jones" than it is scary. It's still not a bad film, just a disappointing one. So if you want to see it, rent it or go to a dollar theater. A cineplex and it's costs are not befitting of this additional unnecessary remake.
Ryôri no tetsujin (1993)
Crack cocaine for foodies
If you like cooking shows, then you have to watch Iron Chef...forget the dubbing..it's not annoying, it's funny, like GODZILLA..it's camp, but it's good...and though corny, the cooking is amazing..you can learn so much...but have a fun time doing it...culinary contests fascinate me, and Iron Chef is why. One hour isn't very long, and when you don't know what your theme is..it makes for improv, although it is rooted in fundamentals, and it's true..dishes never before seen.
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Short commendation
I HATE Anime...but I loved this movie. I had heard it compared to Alice in Wonderland and was aghast...and then I saw it...great movie, for all ages, slightly whiny hero, but too much cool stuff to avoid because of it.
