The Gallows (2015)
Why do people expect something remarkably new?
I'm so tired of hearing the same drivel when it comes to horror films these days: "Nothing new here, tired same old horror crap". Why do people consistently expecting something so new in horror films these days? It's no secret that in horror it's all been done before, so the more people say "this is nothing new" the more it begins to fall on deaf ears!
When I watch a horror films, I don't seek 'new and exciting' because it is so hard to find that in modern horror, what I seek it, is it any good regardless of whether it's fresh and innovating?
The Gallows is a good, solid film with excellent acting, a good - albeit done to death - concept with great directing and some really good scares! This is why I've given it a 7 out of 10! People expect too much from horror these days, the sooner we accept that it has all been done, then we'll be able to enjoy the genre a lot more! Judge based on whether the film does what's been done before well, and not whether it's innovating and fresh. If a horror does bring innovation and freshness, then this is a bonus, but we'd be so lucky!
I enjoyed this film, and instead of being a sceptic, try to enjoy it too!
The ABCs of Death (2012)
Incredibly insane, wonderfully weird and simply brilliant.
When you think of the fact this picture comprises of 26 short films, it would be of no surprise that not all of the short films would become Oscar worthy pieces. There are some real gems within this picture, but with those gems come some lumps of coal. I would plead that you don't allow this fact to take away from the magic of this experimental picture or allow it to put you off watching, because this fresh and innovative picture brought something new to the forefront of mainstream film, experimentation within an amateur scope.
It's really nice to see amateur filmmakers get their chance to create something for the mainstream audience, I believe that regardless of all the scrutinising eyes of the hardcore horror fans, this film soars as a one of a kind horror. I applaud each of the filmmakers for their effort's, even if some of those efforts didn't quite take flight.
The mix of sub-genres is proof enough that this film won't be everyone's bowl of soup, it'd be one very incredible surprise to find any one person who enjoys each and every short in this picture. So in saying that, I find opinions that slam the picture for not producing 26 perfectly amazing shorts, invalid. We have to remember that art is subjective.
I think most of my praise for this picture comes from it's innovative approach in the way it was created. Experimental film creates room for doubt, we all know that experimentation is a love/hate thing. Not everyone appreciates experimental art, but I think it's simply brilliant!
My favourite shorts would be:
'A' is for Apocalypse, 'D' is for Dogfight, 'H' is for Hydro- Electric Diffusion, 'I' is for Ingrown, 'N' is for Nuptials, 'Q' is for Quack, 'S' is for Speed, 'X' is for XXL and 'Y' is for Youngbuck.
I'd pay particular attention to 'X' is for XXL, it brings something of educational substance to horror, it's rather marvellous.
7/10 - marvellous!
Eden Lake (2008)
Real, Raw and Really Grim.
Eden Lake stands as one of the grimmest horror/thriller films I have ever encountered, it holds an extremely chilling atmosphere throughout, and hits you with a climax so somber it leaves you reeling! What makes Eden Lake so terrifying is the fact that you can switch on the news, and find stories similar to that of the film happening outside your door.
It pulls and tugs on the strings attached to the fears of the viewers - especially those viewers residing within the UK! With Britain being named "Murder capital of Europe" it becomes a film that plays very true to British culture - becoming very realistic. As far as horror comes, I believe realism in horror is far scarier, and puts the viewer on edge. When you know it could happen, and it does happen, your mind goes into overdrive, and it blurs reality with your fears.
When a film can evoke a substantial amount of emotions from the audience, and the leaves those emotions lingering in their minds for a substantial amount of time, you know it's served it's purpose. For me, and for the many others I've watched this film with, this is exactly what Eden Lake achieved!
With powerful acting, exquisite directing, chilling cinematography and a very endearing and shocking storyline, it stands as one of the best films I've seen in general, not only within the horror genre!
Don't just watch it, feel it, imagine it, and you'll experience what Eden Lake wants you to experience. True fear.
Ôdishon (1999)
A disturbing let down.
I stumbled upon Audition during Film 4's 'FrightFest', instantly I was lured in for the fact it's a Japanese horror film, and a lot of my favourite horror films are Japanese. I had such high expectations for this film, after all on IMDb it holds an average user rating of 7.3. Although, it was a complete let down, and failed to live up the name that many users had been giving it, which was: 'masterpiece'. The initial problem was the opening of the film, which was bland, and extremely tedious. When creating a horror film, it's vital to grab the spectators attention from the get go, otherwise the suspension will collapse quickly, and the audience will lose interest. This film dragged in, and took more than a while to get anywhere interesting. When it did get interesting - in the last 30 odd minutes - it was suddenly over. The storyline was thin and almost non-existent in the sense that there wasn't much happening throughout a lot of the running time, and at times I forgot I was watching a horror, and it felt like I was simply watching a drama. There were so many unneeded scenes that dragged the film down and almost sent me off to sleep, it was ridiculous. The acting throughout was very average, nothing special or captivating, and there was such minimal character development for many characters besides the two main characters, even then, I didn't see a great deal of character development there, just one layered depths of personification. For a film with a running time of 115 minutes there was not near enough action or story to maintain a stable and healthy horror. The 4/10 in which I've given this film comes purely from the last 30 or so minutes in which I did - at long last - experience some disturbing scenes and images in which I was suitably shaken, and left feeling uneasy, but before I could really feel a deep sense of unsettling emotions, the film suddenly finished, and that was it. I believe that if this had come in a lot earlier and was held throughout most of the film, the film would be a more memorable and successful horror. Although right now it stands as something to be forgotten about very easily. So in conclusion: Audition is a horror full of cardboard like characters, and holds a storyline and plot that fail to create suspense throughout, fail to keep a sustained sense of fear or eeriness and comes across as a dull, monotonous and lifeless excuse for a 'horror', subsequently becoming one of the least scary horrors I've ever come across. Not to mention the poor and lazy attempt at 'acting'. Which leads me to wonder, why people seem to love it so much?
Salad Fingers (2004)
Incredibly haunting, yet deep and meaningful.
On coming across Salad Fingers I was completely grossed out by the initial look of the cartoon series, yet as I watched more of the episodes I became completely engrossed in the cartoon. While others look at it as: disturbing, freaky, creepy, vile and disgusting, and wish it to be banned, those who believe it shows or expresses nothing at all. I find it extremely deep, haunting and meaningful. I find it extremely artistic and is a great image to what society might become in years to come. It's a perfect example of modern day pop art. Salad Fingers is a perfect example of the common person suffering from post-apocalyptic loneliness after all his surroundings have been destroyed by the war. What we see is Salad Fingers day to day life, acting out sheer surrealist and twisted story lines that succeed in making the viewer feel incredibly uncomfortable. We see him driven to insanity and we see the delirious mind-set in which he suffers to live through, and yet, we feel sorry for him, as we witness what alienation and loneliness can do to a person's mind, we observe his mind and his thoughts and feelings, and we see the symbolisation of the mind in it's darkest manner. I have never come across a Flash series quite like this, it really does open your mind to what the world is coming to, what we're doing to the Earth, and in time what we could do to ourselves if we succeed in perishing our world. People who appreciate art, and appreciate a profound storyline will enjoy Salad Fingers: contrary to the belief it's an absurd cartoon with little meaning.
Triangle (2009)
Innovatively Incredible.
On purchasing this film on DVD I was expecting a cliché horror flick. I half expected a simple storyline, one in which each character was killed of one by one, and in the end up the main lovable character survives within an inch of his/her life, in other words a typical gore fest. This is not what I got, at all. What I got was an innovative, creative and unique. Triangle isn't really your classical horror film but more of a psychological thriller. The main character Jess (Melissa George) is a single mother with an autistic son, she is convinced by her friend to take a day off and join him and some friends on a sailing trip for the day. On their adventure they enter a freak electrical storm and their boat is capsized. They then aboard a passing ocean liner, which they realise when on board, is rural and empty. And Jess seems to believe she has been on the ship before. From then on mysterious and strange things occur, Jess finds her keys that were left on the capsized boat, and the group are stalked by a masked figure. What happens then on after makes this film truly brilliant. The gang end up trapped in a time loop of repetition, which they can't seem to escape. Jess is the only survivor of the first loop of events and spends her time there on after trying to break free from every other loop in order to survive. Ending in a grim and shocking manner. This is by far Christopher Smith's best direction, the script is brilliantly written and the performances from each actor are brilliant. Melissa Green's performance in particular was fearless and credible, and very well believable. It's a smartly constructed horror movie. I was suitably shaken by this picture and must praise Smith for creating some real shivers. A highly applauded movie that the majority of reviewers enjoyed, if you are looking for a jumping out your seat, cringing style of horror movie look away. If you want a movie that will play with your mind and throw everything it can at you to twist the reality and the things you see around you then watch. It is a true masterpiece in movie writing, directing, acting and sheer brilliance. A favourite of mines for sure.
Avatar (2009)
Truly Magnificent.
A lot of people I know have stayed clear of Avatar because they seem to think that it's extremely over hyped, if they actually gave this movie a chance they would more than likely change their opinions, I don't think they realise that something that is over hyped turns out to be pretty rubbish, Avatar is far from over hyped and is far from rubbish. Once in a blue moon you get a movie that lives up to it's expectations (Titanic for example) Avatar does more than this, I believe it lives even higher than it's expectations. It's a truly incredible and inspiring movie. You know when a movie is phenomenal if it captures your emotions, and Avatar does just this, it takes control of your mind, hooks your emotions, and takes you on a roller coaster of emotional whirl winds. Everything you would want in a movie is right in this master piece. It may be 162 minutes long, but there is enough drama, adventure, action, suspense, and emotion keeping your attention right till the end. Not once throughout this movie did my attention turn to something else. Your attention has been captured by the indescribable special effects, the colours, the shapes, everything, fascinating to the eyes and the mind. Above all else the storyline is just magnificent, The level of realism achieved is remarkable. Sigourney Weaver gives an exceptional and very convincing performance, and gives this movie that extra little spark, truly amazing. As are the rest of the cast, they all play stunning parts. This by a long shot is the most shockingly astonishing movie I have ever watched, it gave me this unbelievable feeling inside, this indescribable feeling. It's a true piece of art. A film that will go down in books as the most innovative, extra ordinary, mind blowing, emotional, heart bending movie ever. It was a complete honour to watch such a movie. It inspires me to do what I've always wanted to do. I praise every person who was involved in making this movie, they are exceptionally talented. If i could give this movie anything more than 10/10 I would, but that's logically wrong.
