Anything Redeeming about any of the Characters?
I wanted to like this movie. I am a fan of many of the actors in the film but the problem wasn't them but the characters they were portraying...
I couldn't find anything to like about any of them... The characters all seemed like whiners to me... Oh my Dad is a big bad lawyer, my brother is an addict, I'm in a crappy band... I got a crappy cowboy hat! Why would you bother with the main character at all? Sure she is cute but she is also a mean bitch... She treats everyone like crap and then runs crying to someone else when she gets some bad news...
Stay away... Time waster...
5 howls outta 10...
ArrOOoo!
Edvard Munch (1974)
Hard to watch but an interesting interpretation of the art process
I think it is a film for those interested in creative process and or Edvard Munch.
I had no idea how bleak Norwegian life was yet as the film postulates it is out of bleakness new ideas can flourish.
I enjoy the film most when 19th century life in the Norwegian city of Kristiania (Oslo) is described. The legalized prostitution, the walks/promenades, the puritan lifestyle.
I enjoyed it least post Munch's affair/relationship I understand Munch's obsession with his lover and I think they match it well with his desire to create art yet this I feel is also the weakest part of the film. The endless shot of him and her post relationship give the film a monotony that had me checking my watch and wondering "how long IS this film?"...
Still I feel it is worth watching as the way the film is shot has it moments when it makes you feel part of the Bohemian culture and pub life. It was like I was there, especially when the actors look into the camera.
It is also interesting to note that the actors had a huge part in creating and contributing lines to the film. A truly collaborative film...
The Box (2009)
More Angles than a Polygon!
All I had seen was the trailer.
As I watched the movie I thought to myself "the cast isn't bad, the acting is fine but where is it going?" In the end I felt the same way. Watching the movie I thought this would have been a better Twilight Zone episode (I am a huge fan of the original series) and then "wallah" I see Richard Matheson's name!! Not a shocker!
They tried too hard with this movie! They tried to do too much with all the angles... The God angle, the alien angle, the mind control angle, the greed angle, the altruistic angle. Jeez, what angle didn't they try? All these angles never added up to 360 degrees.
If they would have stuck to a story about a couple trying to make ends meet, having to make a life or death decision for money and Matheson's original point of "do you really know anyone?" I think this would have worked...
Avoid it and read the original short story and watch some "original" Twilight Zone!!! ArrrOOooo!
Fakers (2010)
If Making Money Could Only Be this Easy....
High school kids making money? Could happen...
Aren't the kids now a days "super technologically advanced"? I mean, give em a compute, printer and a little knowledge and the world could be saved!?! Seriously, when I turned the film on my movie channel I wasn't sure what to expect? In the end I was pleasantly surprised.
An interesting story of kids who in trying to help each other end up deeper into trouble.
I know that the trouble making cousin was a bit "over the top" but you needed him to be this way to move the story along.
The acting was good and (I think) the main character was from the "Durham County" mini series...
Were the two males a little old for high school? Yeah. But pretty common in a lot of high school films.
In the end I thought the film was entertaining and worth watching! ArrrOOooo!
Gamer (2009)
Disappointing and Disjointed
When A film opens with guys running around with guns blowing each others brains out I thought "this film is in trouble"...
Not a big fan of the steady cam and the quick cut scenes this movie has them a plenty. I get it, it is replicating game play on the puter. But my experience with action games, multiplayer and solo is not what the movie tried to portray...
The story is "so so" and the look of the movie is "low budget". Not a fan of the lighting in the film I think we had some decent actor's talents wasted...
Watching this film would also be a waste of your time! ArrrOOooo!
Donnie Darko (2001)
Who isn't Screwed Up?
This is one of those movies that screams "yeah I'm screwed up and that's OK!".
Donnie Darko is portrayed in his drugged out glory by Jake G. and though his character is drugged up he is probably the most "lucid" character in the movie...
He is the only one that actually sees what is so screwed up around him...
You have teachers that are trying to reach kids through their individual methods. The phys ed teacher who brings in the self help guru played by the late Patrick Swayze (who is also screwed up).
The English teacher who is using a passive method of kids reading short stories but that isn't working either...
Donnie is doing things to save his community but in the end the only thing he can do is? Well watch the movie!!! I just watched it again and I still think it's relevant today (8 years later...) JD
