The Hunger Games (2012)
The Excessive Closeup Games
I was excited to see this film based on all the hype from my friends. I haven't read the books, but thought the story was interesting based on the one-line explanations I got from others.
I went into this film expecting to see something similar to the Twilight films (teen obsession over book turned film), but better.
What I got was much, much worse.
First off, I want to say that I thought the acting was great. The actors did a great job of portraying their characters.
What WASN'T so great was the lack of character development. The death scenes, even those meant to be emotional, didn't affect me at all. I am one who isn't afraid to cry like a baby at a movie, and I often do. But while the others around me were sobbing, I was just ready for the scene to be over with.
Another reason I strongly disliked this film, has to do with my title. It seems like 95% of the shots in this movie were closeup on the characters faces. These are fine, to an extent, but you begin to wonder after a while if the actors aren't all just bodiless floating heads. The fight scenes were quickly cut together, which could work, if you weren't zoomed in so much that you have no idea what was going on.
For a film with a supposed 100,000,000 dollar budget, this came across as a low-budget independent adaption of the book. They could have done so much more to improve the visual aspect of the film as well as make the characters more likable.
Overall, I would give this film 4 stars, mainly due to the great acting and costume design. Everything else, was horrible.
Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files (2010)
Best Show on Syfy since Ghost Hunters (The Original)
Seriously, I look forward to this show every week. The only thing that sucks is that it comes on after that GOD-AWFUL excuse for a reality show "Mary Knows Best". Just cancel that and make Fact or Faked 2 hours long. The investigators are very professional with their attempted debunking. What would make it even better is if they allow viewers to submit videos to be investigated instead of choosing them themselves. The characters are easily relatable and do not add in any additional drama. While some of the investigations may have some "scifi" aspects to them it does not fill the show. I would enjoy it even more without all the "paranormal experiences" and just the debunking of viral videos. All in all, this is a wonderful way to spend a Thursday night.
The Lovely Bones (2009)
Give Me a Break...
Do NOT go by the other reviews out there that give it less than 4 stars. There is no way this movie deserves that. They are merely individuals who refuse to see any book made into a movie.
I have never read the book, but I saw the movie tonight and I think it was the best movie of its type that I have seen in the longest time. The acting and storyline were superb. The only thing that holds this back from a 9 with me is the ending which I won't discuss here. It felt like it had great potential for a cliff-hanging ending and then BAM, the whole thing changes. Didn't like that at all. But maybe it's part of the book.
Anyways, just wanted to warn all of you who are being convinced that this movie sucks based on all the negative reviews. Please go see it for yourself before judging it. If you haven't read the book, see it. If you have read it and you aren't a closed minded prick who thinks books turned into movies always deserve one star, still go see it. I really enjoyed this film.
