The Only Way I Could Like This Show...
2 September 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

When I first started watching this program, I was disappointed. The premise was good - a show in which investigators try to debunk viral videos of ghosts, UFOs and the like.

The kids do a decent job at experimenting and finding ways to duplicate the videos in question, although this bit is pretty formulaic. It seems like no matter what the video, they go through three experiments to debunk the video. Often times they go to unnecessary lengths, always having to travel to the place where the video was filmed, even when they could replicate it just as well anywhere. What difference does it make if an RC plane with a balsa wood flying saucer build around it is flying in the skies of Ontario, Little Rock or Sydney? In the end, though, this isn't the part of the show I am disappointed with. If this were the whole show, I could respect it and enjoy it as lightly educational and informative.

However, nearly always if the case involves a monster, a ghost or a UFO of any kind, even if the video is debunked, the kids swing into action and do a "night investigation". This is where the show gets corny and silly. The only way I can enjoy it is to see it as nothing but entertainment on the level of a cheap spook house ride in a carnival.

They approach the subjects in what they seem to think is a scientific way, but it's such poor and pathetic science - if one could even call it science. Most every episode involves at least one ghost case. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, you should at least understand this about them: there is absolutely no scientific proof of them and any evidence of them that is presented by anyone is sketchy at best. Even if they do exist, there is no proof as to what they are. Some think they are disembodied souls of the dead, some believe them to be demons or angels, some believe they are nothing but energy left behind when someone dies. However, these kids approach ghosts not only as if they do exist, but as if there are rules as to what ghosts are and how to find them. They take it for fact that when ghosts are around, there are drops in temperature and spikes in the energy levels in the air. It seems that any unexplained noise they hear is proof positive that a place is haunted. And they often offer EVP recordings as evidence of a haunting with no regard to the possibility that they are recording the voices of others nearby or maybe common noises that just sound a little like a voice.

Let's discuss EVP for just a moment. If EVP recordings really are recordings of ghosts, they raise more questions with me than answers. Why are they so difficult to understand? Why are the messages so short? Why don't they give any truly important information rather than messages like, "we're here" or "so cold" or some other vague. One would think if a ghost were going to bother to approach these kids, the ghost would have something important to say.

It makes no sense that they always do the investigations at night, either. Who says ghosts can only come out at night? And why don't they spend any real length of time at the allegedly haunted places? Shouldn't they get to know the general creeks and pops that these old buildings they investigate generate naturally? All this is backed with sleek editing, overreactions from the investigators, third-rate spook house music, etc.

The worst part of it all is for a show about debunking videos and determining if they are fact or fake, they NEVER ask another investigation team to debunk their findings. How do we know that the voice on the EVP isn't just a camera man bumping into something in the dark and muttering "ow"? How do we know that a door they hear slamming didn't come from a nearby building? I would take the show a lot more seriously if they invited a team of skeptics to come along and debunk any strangeness they happen to catch on tape.

So, in the end, the show can be quite enjoyable if looked at as nothing but light-hearted creepiness and nothing more. If you try to take it seriously, you will be disappointed.
