Seinfeld: The Bris (1993)
A Rare Misstep
Seinfeld, from around seasons 3 to 7 was probably as close to a perfect sitcom as you're going to find. Consistently funny and almost endlessly re-watchable, it rarely hit a bum note.
This is one of them.
If Kramer's "pig man" debacle was this episode's greatest sin, I'd (almost) let it slide. Painfully weird and with little payoff, it's one of the show's most head scratching moments. I mean, really: what were they thinking? It doesn't work.
George's petty attempts to seek restitution for his damaged car are fitfully funny and Jerry's Marlon Brando impersonation almost saves the main storyline, until Charles Levine's mohel character enters. He is, without hyperbole, unwatchable. The absolute worst unfunny Jewish stereotype, the whole thing sinks the entire episode. It's terrible.
Seinfeld: The Good Samaritan (1992)
Becky Gelke? Yes please!
Not the greatest episode with a couple of middling storylines and one bafflingly useless one.
Jerry's hit and run girlfriend is only mildly amusing, as is George sleeping with a married woman (!!) because her husband didn't acknowledge her sneezes. Seriously, it's no wonder that the "you're so good looking" thing didn't take off...it's completely a forced catchphrase.
The less said about Kramer's Mary Hart induced seizures, the better.
That being said, this one does feature Helen Slater (looking absolutely gorgeous) in a far too brief, unbilled cameo. Just like Jerry, I'd have found any excuse to talk to her...so I'll bump it up an extra star.
M.O.D.O.K.: This Man... This Makeover! (2021)
You're bothering property values!
An above average episode with a number of good laughs, some surprising heart and one classic scene that's easy to miss in the first two minutes: Wonder Man mercilessly bullying homeless supervillain (??) Tatterdemalion for no particular reason. Seriously, it's a hilarious throwaway bit that makes the episode.
Three's Company: Friends and Lovers: Part 1 (1984)
Not Much of a Wedding
So Three's Company was coming to an end and being spun-off into the ill-fated "Three's a Crowd" but first they attempted to bring some (hurried) closure to the characters we've grown so fond of.
Here, Janet gets married to her boyfriend, Phil (who she's been dating for like two episodes). You can tell that the creators couldn't really care less about a fancy send off because they get married IN THE APARTMENT! Yup, why budget for any sort of set when we can just throw some party favors on the wall? Seriously, the apartment is the only setting in the entire half hour.
Oh and the attendees? The regular cast, Jack's new flame, Vicky and a half dozen extras. That's it. I know that Suzanne Somers wouldn't exactly be welcomed back but would it have been too much to bring Janet's parents in? Yup, they conveniently "couldn't make it". How about Cindy? Nope, she disappeared at the end of season six, never to be mentioned again. The beloved Ropers? They moved a mere 20 minutes away but outside of their single return guest appearance never got to come back.
So it's sort of a sad ending to this long running show. While it's nice that we got any sort of wrap up at all in an era where plenty of great shows just ended without any fanfare, this one just feels like they couldn't wait to move on to the new spinoff, to hell with the last eight seasons.
Three's Company: The Brunch (1982)
A Day at the Beach
A decent enough latter day Three's Company episode that milks a few laughs from Jack trying to fool a stuffy minister into thinking his new restaurant is a super-conservative establishment with the help of the usual suspects.
But what elevates this one is Terri, looking smoking hot in her swimwear. Janet's modest black one-piece isn't anything to phone home about but that tiny pink bikini? Wowza.
Sure it wasted the opportunity for a few more hooker jokes (I think there were only two) but this one is still worth a seventh or eighth look.
Three's Company: Jack's Navy Pal (1978)
Uncomfortable
Easily among the worst Three's Company episodes, this one is pretty difficult to watch. Jack's old navy tormentor shows up and is still just as much of a jerk except now he's blind! He hits Jack, wants Jack to hit him back and when Jack refuses, he starts trashing the place. Awesome. Of course, there's no satisfactory payoff and the jerk doesn't even get his just desserts at the end. Ugh.
The episode's one saving grace that keeps it from the absolute bottom of the barrel is a scene of Chrissy doing the Charleston sans-bra. One of the truly great moments in Jiggle TV history almost saves this one...almost.
The Office: Get the Girl (2012)
The Nadir of the Series
It's the lowest rated episode here on IMDB and for good reason. The Erin-Andy half of the episode is decent enough (and features a nice guest turn from Georgia Engel) but as most other reviewers have already pointed out, Nellie Bertram (played by the insufferable Catherine Tate) is beyond repulsive. Shoehorning this awful character into a prominent position for the last season and a half was nothing short of disastrous. The beginning of the end.
