5 American Kids - 5 American Handguns (1995)
An American Tragedy
This is an exceptional documentary about 4 children who were killed by handguns and one who murdered a police officer with a gun. Each story involves a weapon in the hands of an immature mind. The stories involve everything from horsing around to suicide and murder. All of the people in the documentary would be alive today if guns were simply regulated more tightly. It is all very tragic and difficult to watch. The parents of these children are all heart broken. It shows the tragic story of what is happening to us because we are bullied by a vocal minority to accept these weapons into our society unregulated. Hopefully someday we can stand up to them.
Glenn Beck (2006)
Does anybody really find him funny?
This guy sucks....and he sounds a little like my Dad (.....in my day we didn't have this darned blamed rap music). It was the Rolling Stones when I was young (same stuff different decade--everybody grows up and cuts their hair). I've never laughed at anything he's said. He also seems to be against the excesses of our society nevertheless he totally pro corporate America....I guess he is some sort of fascist (pro business but for controlling the individual--'cept guns of course). He also loves the Sopranos and Alanis Morrisette but hates R rated movies. Many many contradictions. Glenn you live in a free society---get over it. Do you really think he's funny?
The Birth of a Nation (1915)
Horrible film
This is a horrible racist film that is a sad chapter in American movie history. If this film didn't exist some other film would have had been made over 100 minutes and had the kind of editing innovations this one had. The subject matter cancels out any admiration for the firsts in this movie.
What is worst than this movie are some of the messages on this board defending the film. One person writes how true the film is!! It is stunningly inaccurate. Another person wrote that this film would be in the top 250 if it wasn't for all the "blacks on IMDb"!! I weep for my country.....so much ignorance.
I am white and I give it a one......complete and utter garbage.
Happy Feet (2006)
Glenn Beck and Michael Medved are idiots
More proof conservatives are a joke.....its a dancing penguin movie guys....lighten up Conservatives attack animated penguin movie, Happy Feet, as global-warming propaganda Cultural conservatives, led by CNN's Glenn Beck, Fox News' Neil Cavuto, and syndicated talk-show host Michael Medved, have all criticized Happy Feet, the new Warner Bros. animated movie about Mumble, the tap-dancing penguin, because they say the movie is laced with liberal overtones and tries to "indoctrinate" children. Specifically, conservatives claim the movie is pushing a global-warming agenda. Yet the film makes no references to global warming. Instead, the movie's conservationist subplot revolves around Mumble's attempt to combat man-made pollution and overfishing in his quest to help his fellow penguins. The blockbuster movie, which has already earned more than $100 million in U.S. ticket sales, is silent regarding the issue of global warming.
Nonetheless, Cavuto and Beck, who referred to the film as "propaganda," both complained that the movie amounts to "an animated version of An Inconvenient Truth," a reference to former Vice President Al Gore's critically acclaimed documentary about the threats posed by global warming. Cavuto said that while viewing Happy Feet, he "half-expected to see an animated version of Al Gore pop up." Cavuto also stated that he found the movie "offensive" and asked whether it pushed "a far-left message." Medved, who is also a professional film critic, complained in a November 17 entry on his Townhall.com web log that "the propagandistic theme suggests that the biggest menace for the lovable penguins is the human race -- stealing the fish on which the birds depend, or ruining planet earth through pollution and global warming." Medved also claims the movie has a subtle gay theme as well.
None of the commentators supplied any examples from the movie to support their allegation that Happy Feet pushes a liberal, global-warming agenda. In fact, no scenes from the movie mention the issue. Happy Feet is void of any global-warming references, there are no obvious allusions to it, and global warming is not one of the movie's themes. Global warming plays no part in the film.
Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (2006)
Awesome funny funny
The D movie was terrific!!! If you didn't like it---you just don't rock. I was laughing throughout the movie. The first scene with Meatloaf and Dio is worth the price of admission alone. It had a real rock opera feel to it like Tommy. The Sasquatch scene is priceless as well. The rock references will satisfy any music nerd (like me). I don't understand all the negative reviews. At least the movie is a big hit in the UK. But of course they still like the rock n' roll there. Watch for a cameo appearance by Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and Tim Robbins (his appearance is very bizarre). Get out there and support the D this weekend!!!
This Divided State (2005)
This is a well made independent film
To be honest---not quite a 10 (probably a 7 or an 8)---but I rated it 10 to offset the all the ones given to it by the anti-Moore crowd. A frightening look at a community trying anything (including bullying, bribery, and law suits) to stop Michael Moore from speaking at a conservative Utah college. It's a peek at the American brand of fascism. The effort is organized by Kay Anderson---who has made many attempts to stop events in the community before. I think all Americans conservative and liberal should agree on one thing---Freedom of Speech. Anderson is quoted as saying "Free speech works because most of us know when to keep our mouths shut". This misses the whole point of freedom of speech. The movie is flawed in spots. The segment about the guy who looks like Moore comes to mind. Overall its a very good documentary and it really shows the colliding attitudes in our country today.
Be Cool (2005)
Pretty weak
Despite a cool dance scene with Uma and Travolta and funny performances by Andre 3000 and the Rock, this film just doesn't make it. It has too few laughs and it has a lame story line. Its amazing that a film with so many talented people just doesn't work. Harvey Keitel alone usually makes a movie work for me. The part with Aerosmith is pretty sappy. I cringed when Travolta explains to Steven Tyler what "Sweet Emotion" really means. I've got to admit that the dance scene with Uma is pretty hot though. I'd wait for the DVD or cable version to see it. This isn't any Pulp Fiction for sure. It was very disappointing. Better luck next time guys!
Michael Moore Hates America (2004)
The film has missed the point
The title says it all, this guy is just another "shrill" voice doing a hatchet job. Moore is taking on the establishment. Moore is speaking for our soldiers dying for big business in Iraq (Fahrenheit 911). He is speaking for the guys losing their jobs to places overseas (Roger and Me). He is speaking for all the victims of gun crimes in this country (Columbine). This guy is supporting the establishment. He can try to market himself as a "maverick" or "guerilla" film maker, but it can't fool me. He's just another mouth piece for the rich. I guess good for him--he'll have a nice career at the Faux News network---we distort--you comply.
By the way I've seen Moore speak and he doe not hate America. Talk about shrill.
Bowling for Columbine (2002)
Excellent!! Like all of Moore's films!!
Moore does it again with this excellent documentary about the looney gun culture in our country. He explores the ties of the use of guns with fear and racism. Moore obviously has struck a nerve when you look at the reaction from the right. I liked his oscar speech too.
