Under sandet (2015)
A tribute to forgotten souls
Let's be honest, I think that after what the Germans have done during World War Two, pretty much every country in Europe was (understandably) pissed off and eager for retribution. Denmark was no exception.
I do not need to tell you what's gonna happen in this movie, you already know it. Removing thousands of mines is a job needed to be done by specialists with heavy protection, not by teenagers.
Witnessing the death of real soldier is one thing, that of a child is another.
This is why the further the movie goes, the more heartbreaking it becomes. These young boys certainly did not deserve such a cruel and unfair punishment. This film is a tribute to their memory, to their innocence, not to be forgotten.
A truly overwhelming Danish-German drama movie.
Jongens (2014)
Meaningful and touching
Another masterpiece of Dutch cinema.
I believe that this movie isn't very known outside the Netherlands; yet it deserves a much wider popularity. Although I was skeptical at first, I absolutely loved the movie, as (like the main character) I've always struggled with myself, with something as trivial as my identity till this very day. I also believe that Jongens is meant to deliver a message; that self-acceptance isn't as easy as it sounds, and no one should be harmed for what he/she is.
De slag om de Schelde (2020)
Heartbreaking
This movie is among the few who made me cry.
While most of WW2 movies tend to focus on famous battles such as in Normandy or at Stalingrad in a typical Hollywood style, this one is a tribute for those who gave their life for the freedom of the Netherlands prior to their liberation in May 1945.
On one hand, we have the Dutch resistance and a squad of Allied soldiers lost behind enemy lines; on the other hand, the young (but naive) Marinus van Staveren witnesses what Nazi madness truly is, and starts questioning the choices he made.
As shown in the movie, even countries racially favored by Nazis such as the Netherlands weren't spared at all from the atrocities committed by the Germans; the latter being widely regarded among Dutch people as parasites.
Having personal links to the Netherlands and Belgium, I was all the more sensitive to the events narrated in this movie.
De slag om de Schelde is among the greatest war movies I've ever watched, a masterpiece of Dutch cinema. If you expect a realistic war movie, just go watch it.
