AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
It is just a product for a game fans
I have bought the DVD yesterday. I decided to have a nice two hours after hard brain work i was finishing. So I finished the job.... I poured a glass of cognac and sat and started to watch the movie. To my own surprise after 25 minutes I knew..I just KNEW I was watching the worst movie I met. The problem with the movie is just a single one: it pretends to be a good movie. It wants very hard. It meaning all people behind it. It is sometimes to watch middle quality B or even C movie - these people do not pretend they do blockbusters. They just tell story with some ambitions but we all feel there is an understanding. Here I felt someone has just ripped me off! More to this - all the gore and killing and senseless violence together with clichés from Scream typo movies when coleege boys and girls die out - made me feel immune to all of the situation on screen. During more than 90 minutes there was only one scene that got my attention - while main characters got to hospital, the blonde started to run and got killed by this flying device Predator threw. Only 2 minutes of good movie. The producers might have better sold this as "content" to some other producers. Anyway I am totally disappointed. What I saw was a product for Game fans. They will buy almost anything even while complaining afterwards. And I will remember that Brothers Strauss are not Wachowski or "Fargo" brothers. They are brothers to Uwe Boll. Next time I will know better.
Pulse (2006)
Quite an interesting idea not explored
I give 5 for potential. Since the movie got its potential. The general idea of some "Invasion". I have not seen the Japan movie. Personally I do lot like this type of movies from Japan - scaring just for scaring. You saw one girl getting out from the well - you saw them all. So having not being watcher of Japan original I watched the movie with fresh mind and potential interest. I feel disappointed because of two things: 1. The authors were unable to make their minds as for "explanation" of what really happened. Getting from simple horror to the nice cheap S-F would get the movie a nice boost. I would even prefer to watch "alien invasion" on radio frequency waves that seeing ghosts that are so ugly. Some tend to believe ghosts are caring for their relatives. I tend to believe in it If I have to believe in ghosts :) 2. Proportions of accents. There are scenes in some movies that kill the atmosphere. So you do not feel scared anymore. You just sit and watch since you feel stopping watching would be like to admit that you lost your time on your demand. So there is a scene when the Aliens from Computers get at large and there is a TV message and the guy speaking that there are problems, difficult situation, crisis.... And all of the sudden...our main character...does nothing! She just watches...sits, takes off the jacket and does nothing. This moment was the end of serious watching. Just like a script writer told me "Hey we lost the pace and ideas so you know...help yourself..but we need to sell this movie anyway to someone. So nothing personal :)"
Finally I am a bit surprised that action is located on some campus. We do not know what they study. They mental capabilities are rather low. They live like pigs eating fast food, sitting at computers, chatting, celling. Of course there were scenes we could understand the message - we are addict to hi tech of communication. But later on these young people we just calling themselves and turning computers on and off. The first one to get killed was really hard to believe to be capable to writing anything more than some simple code. I would feel safer seeing highly educated people getting with experiment that got awry. These young people would not be able to experiment with the microwave cooking. I cannot imagine them experiment with new technology - global one - while living like rats.
So... the idea of invasion of such aliens would apply to me. Especially if we could fight back to repair what we have done.
I hope the next movie would be more sophisticated. I tend to believe there must have been some issues with production. I cannot believe someone decided to produce something like this with no arguments.
Again - very good idea - wasted to fissionable Japanese series.
Seraphim Falls (2006)
A bit disappointing
The FIVE is given for the cast. When you have such people on screen - Brosnan, Neesam and Griffith you expect something to happen. Like story to be told. If you remember "Dead Man" with Depp and Henricksen and GRIFFITH you may understand what I mean. In "Dead Man" there was a "On the way movie". While this one was a disaster. Should Brosnan and Neesam have failed in participation from whatever reason to other unknown actors movie would be just B class film. I expected "SOMETHING" from this. And I got same as I got from the movie I have seen lately with Cussack and Freeman about some hit-man caught by Sunday dad making his terms with son. So all I can say is that good cast worked very hard to save poor script. Commenting the high notes from several users: some time ago I also tended to give high marks to something I was unable to understand. Now as I am quite mature I decided to turn tables. I am quite an educated and tolerant man. But since I have assen over 1500 movies (this is my collection) I also have something called "taste". I feel disappointed with this movie. I paid for it and I understand that good actors agree to act in low budget movies. All is fine with it - as long as the screenplay is fine. I really wish the movie was better. R
Kinky Boots (2005)
One of most warm and positive movies I have ever seen
I have never seen such a beautiful movie for a very long time. It tells a story. A good and nice story. Story is told well. It says about friendship. Friendship between shoemaker and main hero. Friendship between shoemaker and his final girl. Friendship between bulky male and hero. It says about friendship and positive attitude towards another man.
We see it clear that the most male character is the Lola pretending not to be male.
We learn of loyalty to employees.
We also learn of basic capitalism - these are people who make factories, not the walls.
And we learn that it is fruitful to seek changes, to work hard to change ourselves. To develop.
I believe the movie is strongly underestimated. I have seen more than thousand of movies. I cried watching it. I seldom cry since I am a man :)
I wish more moves were like this one.

Lejdis (2008)
Polish cinema reborn
I am really glad I have seen this movie. My wife and her friend made me go to see this movie and I am happy to admit I am very positively disappointed. The plot is fine - no major flaws. Characters are well described. They simply live their lives. Despite of the fact you do not know what they do their living from. Most important issue they are not paper made. The emotions are very strong. As for workshop issues all seem to be fine: sound, pictures, editing. This could be a movie for everyone - not only Polish typical cuisine. With good translation even the Elnglish would have good fun of it. The movie feeds from "Fours weddings..." but with no clichés. I am glad this director works with these producers. I have read the interview with him planning "Monte Cassino" war movie of Polish victory during WWII. I would be crossing fingers for his success. He knows how to tell stories. This is very important.
P.S. Two points minus 10 for: 1. Borys Szyc - this character seems to be living his own life. It was forced correlation with "Testosteron". Some may like it. I did not. 2. Erwin Igor character - either flaw in casting or this actor is simply poor. I felt like watching a 5 year old telling his parts. 5 year olds were better.
Besides, all was fine. And I am happy. R
P.P.S. Some viewers may feel disappointed with the fact, that "Testosteron" connections so widely mareketed before the movie went to cinemas is rather vague. However I believe producers have no choice - Testosteron was quite a good movie coming from the same wokshop thus it seemed reasonable to catch attention of its fans.
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004)
Seldom you see such a movie
Subject is self contained in the title of the movie. However despite of the fact I have seen thousands of movies this one is one of my favorite biography movie. More to this, I admire it for that it always makes me to dwell on Seller's biography since the movie was able to impress me with his life's tragic emotions. I have most of Seller's movies in my collection (except the early Britishi comedies) and always I watch "Life and Death..." I want to watch them again and again. Another thing is the cast. Jeoffrey Rush is magnificent. I really wonder why he has not been asked to play another Pink Panther movie. The one with Steve Martin (whom I like... but...) is some big mistake. I always believed that if something proved to be great achievement any sequel should be aimed on making you see the previous parts. But lets leave it aside. The "Life and Death..." also made me think of Seller's complexity. Such a great actor who created such magnificent characters (Inspector Clusseau is one, the second in my very favorite Chance from "Being There") has spoiled his private life to such extent. His natural children have no profit from his efforts. While a money seeking woman succeeded in ripping his family of everything. Gentlemen... beware of young sexy women who are open for marriages.....
The Contract (2006)
Lots of wasted potential
I give three for Freeman and Cusack and some other characters - they did what they were paid for. But when I watched the movie I got impression that someone simply could not decided how to blow life in to simple story. Since there were several ways to make the movie far more than average: - emphasise political issues - getting into thriller plot where main characters are forced to get out from uneasy situation. - replacement of Freeman helpers with group of killers to eliminate him. Now all of people - Freeman, Cusack, son and these two useless characters were to fight for life and be on Freemans skills mercy; - making Cusack not ex cop but someone more dangerous like ex killer or maybe a serial killer? Any ideas that may make the plot aloft seems acceptable for me. I have seen almost 2000 movies - this is a collection I have. And this movie as one of very few caused me to such thoughts that it is lack of decision what direction to go. Since nobody decided what movie is actually made we got proper receipt as for average meal: father son conflict, bad man who is not really bad, traitor, treacherous officials, some terrorist support and woman since wife is dead. While the movie itself opened so many routes - compared to hundreds that were completely wasted from the idea creation moment. I always wonder why this happens.
