Final Destination (2000)
What if Rube Goldberg had an Evil Twin who filled in for Death one day?
***Potential Minor Spoilers***
What if Rube Goldberg had an Evil Twin who filled in for Death one day? You would get this movie. Aside from being largely predictable, double so for not having seen anything of it before aside from the previews when it was first in theaters. I thought that death was trying way to hard to kill these people. If it was trying to make them look like accidents then was going about it all wrong. I get that it makes for more excitement in the anticipation but i honestly thought this movie was anticipationless and suspenseless.
When people are going to die you can see exactly how they are going to die right when it happens and before had. The film makers tip their hand way to much for the duration. My other complaint was the insane funeral home worker, who I was under the initial impression was an incarnation of death, but after seeing the second film, think he was just some nutcase and wonder why they would ever go to him for advice, except that he convienantly knows everything they need to know or at least enough to get them in the right direction.
All in all I thought this film would be the best kind to rent with some friends and then make fun of while it runs. It wasn't scary or shocking or suspenseful at all.
The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)
What was so great?
I have never been so bored by a movie. I didnt feel drawn to any of the characters, especially Georgie. There was nothing tragic about his downfall since you want him to fail from the start. From start to finish it drags its feet along endlessly. Welles might have done some great things but this is not one of them.
Manhunter (1986)
Horrible, really Horrible
I happen to see it at the library and decided, I've seen the modern adaptation, and i read the book, so just for comparison and to complete it all let's get the original. Quite frankly I'm disappointed i even picked up the box. First off when they say based on the work 'Red Dragon' by Harris, they use it in the loosest way possible. Half the time I didn't even feel like i was watching the same story. All the primary actors where way over the top, I guess they missed the subtlety day in acting school. on top of the the musical scoring in this movie almost made me want to turn it off, i'm not sure what the composer was thinking but my personal take on it, is that the music and the mood dont often match and some of the incedental music is just laughable. Lector wasnt creepy, or menacing. I dont belive for a second that he was capible of anything worse than jaywalking. When you see Hopkins in the role, you feel afraid, and with good reason, his personality and manerisms, drip with the corruption and maddness locked away inside his head. The 'Tooth Fairy'/'Red Dragon' also unconvincing, his character was underdeveloped and it seemed more like he was just a ragin lunatic rather than the methodical madman he is in the book and modern adaptaion. The modern adaptation didnt potray it well, and this movie just skips it all together, about the conflict between Francis and the Red Dragon, the dicotomy and resistance that Francis trys to put up against the will of the Dragon. Which brings me to the ending, while i wonlt go into detail, the ending of the book and the ending of the movie are so different that i was quite dissapointed. It's like the director got bored, decided this was enough, and just said "hey, we'll just wrap up the story right here." even though there is more to the book and some imporant parts.
They also left out some of what i would consider important subplots and plot points, not enough emphasis was placed on key details from the book, I found the whole package a big let down. Read the Book, Watch the modern adaptation, but you can safely skip over this waste of film.
SLC Punk! (1998)
A striking similarity to Trainspotting.
***If any spoilers are present they are for comparative basis only*** ***consider youself forewarned*** is it just me or does this seem like Trainspotting done over with Punk Anarchist in the 1980's instead of Heroin Junkies in "modern times". Both feature young adults in part of a subculture which is typically looked down upon by the status quo, both involve drug use some of which might be considered gratuitous. In both the "non-druging" friend of the protagoinist gets involved with drugs somehow and ends up dying from it. This loss and view of the destructive nature of drugs really pushes for the protagonist to straighten up and stop being part of the rebelious subculture and start being a productive part of society. Don't get me wrong, it was a well done movie, with characters I cared about and a lot of diverse and intresting subplots but overall i think trainspotting as far as this "formula" for a movie was better done and leaves the audience a little less dissoriented feeling at the end.
John Doe (2002)
Seems like a new pretender.
Has anyone else made the conncection to "The Pretender" (1996). John doe seems like a remake of jarod except hes not a new proffesion each week. Hes trying to find out who he is much like jarod and also is excedingly intellegent like jarod. But john doe lacks the sense of humor jarod posseses. THe black and white thing with john doe's vision seems kind of gimicky but i think the show has potential. I doubt it will ever surpass its architype in my mind though.
The X-Fools (1997)
A great spoof
*Potental Spoilers, I Doubt There Are Any Though* A long time fan of the X Files I was curious to see this game I had recived. From outlandish conspiracy theories, to the offbeat comments heard by clicking on random things, to the exchanges between Mully and Scudder. By far what makes the game is the bonus games, Abduct-This and the pac man style game involving Scully and Mulder. Abduct-This is where you pilot a UFO trying to capture or rescue animals, aliens, people, while avoiding the MIBs. The game itself has a lot of funny clips in it and I would say good replay value. There is alot of subtle and not so subtle sexual humor though. Scudder:"Someone or Something shut off the lights. Quick Mully, hand me your flashlight." Mully:"Um... Scudder, that's not my flashlight." Scudder:"I know...". The grand finale of the game is really what topped it off, well you'll just have to see that for yourself.
Love for $17.50 (1998)
A strange but wonderful movie
This movie asks a very basic question: What is love? Is it something between two people or can it be between a man and a manaquin. When does love deviate into obsession? This movie paints the portrait of a broken man looking for an escape from his loveless life. He is tired of being downtrodden by women who don't love him or who are unfaithful. One day he comes across his perfect woman, a manaquin in the window of a secondhand shop. His decent and entrapment into his own fantasy world becomes the focus of the later part of the film, and the big ending... well you'll just have to watch it and find out. I gave it a 10.
Fight Club (1999)
A great, but misunderstood movie.
When I first saw Fight Club, in the theatre, I was confused by all the things going on as subplots and side issues. I really came to appreciate the movie after my second viewing. What I came to realize is that this movie had something to offer that wasn't for everyone: the blatent and underlying truths. The movie is very true, all of the things about life, the world, people. Don't get caught up in the violence, if you dislike it understand why you do so. If only for the violence watch it again for the content. It is a great movie with something real to say, a rarity in this age.
