There are not many festivals where you could easily cross paths with a Nobel Laureate or a Pulitzer Prize winner while queuing for some food - unless you are sauntering around HowTheLightGetsIn festival that is.
Something of an ideological lucky dip, HowTheLightGetsIn, the biggest philosophy and music festival in the world, is known for its eclectic line-ups. Previous speakers at the event span from Noam Chomsky, renowned academic, to Brian Eno, the English musician, Ed Milliband, former Labour Party leader, Philip Pullman, best-selling author, to two authors both famed for whipping up controversy, Richard Dawkins and Slavoj Zizek.
Update - due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth 11 on September 8 the festival is now taking place on October 1-2.
At its core, HowTheLightGetsIn is about trying to liberate philosophy from the far-flung elitist ivory tower of academia and make it more digestible and rousing for wider audiences. And it is Hilary Lawson,...

Mamie Gummer has been cast as recurring guest star on National Geographic’s Leonardo DiCaprio-produced astronaut series “The Right Stuff,” TheWrap has learned exclusively.
An adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s iconic, bestselling book of the same name, the scripted series stars Jake McDorman (“Limitless”) as Alan Shepard, Patrick J. Adams (“Suits”) as John Glenn and Colin O’Donoghue (“Once Upon a Time”) as Gordo Cooper.
According to Nat Geo, “the eight-part series takes a clear-eyed, non-nostalgic look at the nation’s drive to be the first in space and the lives of the ambitious astronauts and their families, who gained instant fame in a competition that would either kill them or make them immortal. The first season takes place at the height of the Cold War in 1959, when the Soviets are dominating the space race. The public is in fear of a nation in decline, so the U.S. government conceives...

The pilot season, launched back in July with the support of Arcadia Films, The Australia Council and City of Sydney, saw Carroll Harris – a writer and regular critic for ABC Rn’s The Screen Show – commission works from 12 different artists and filmmakers.
Her brief to the creatives had no thematic limitations, rather she simply funded them to create something short and designed to be viewed on a small screen.
The motivations behind the idea were twofold. One, Carroll Harris wanted to support creatives whose work she found interesting. Two, she was keen to shake up how experimental screen art was commissioned and distributed. That is, to take it outside of traditional...

Ruston Kelly pays tribute to some of his formative influences with the new project, Dirt Emo Vol. 1, which will be available October 11th. On Friday, the Nashville singer-songwriter, who released the album Dying Star in 2018, dropped a cover of Dashboard Confessional’s breakout hit “Screaming Infidelities” that features the band’s lead singer Chris Carrabba.
Originally a jangly, heartbroken anthem when it was released in 2002, “Screaming Infidelities” takes a turn toward gothic gloom in Kelly’s rendering. Stripped entirely of percussion, this new version is driven by piano and the...

At today’s Cannes press conference for Paramount’s Rocketman, the media was eager to compare the Elton John musical biopic to Fox’s Freddie Mercury multi-Oscar winner Bohemian Rhapsody.
A journalist asked wither Taron Egerton could see himself at the Oscars in February, just like Rami Maleck earlier this year who took home the Best Actor Oscar for Mercury.
Taron Egerton, who sublimely plays Elton John, was quick to temper expectations, and that’s a philosophy which can also be said about Rocketman‘s B.O. prospects: Don’t be quick to juxtapose Rocketman to Bohemian Rhapsody (even though Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher’s fingerprints are on the latter pic having finished after Bryan Singer was fired).
“That movie is unicorn,” said Egerton then joking, “I can’t remember who finished it.”
“But our movie is a different animal, it’s a musical that requires an actor who can sing in the lead role,...

Shazam! is more than just another Dceu movie, it is packed with 80 years of DC Comics history and Easter eggs.
This article consists of nothing but Shazam! spoilers. We have a spoiler free review of the film here.
Shazam! marks the first time the character has come to the big screen as a big budget movie. The movie is based heavily on one specific Shazam! story, the 2011 origin tale by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, but throughout there are elements drawn from 80 years of Shazam history. We're trying to track down all the bits of Shazam and DC Universe lore peppered throughout the latest Dceu adventure...but we need your help.
So here's how this works. I've put everything I've found from the movie (so far) here. But if you think you've spotted something I missed, drop us a note in the comments or hit me up...

Ruston Kelly recently unveiled shirts adorned with the words “Dirt Emo,” a pretty spot-on term to describe his sound that melds some Southern flourishes, like steel guitar and evocative, narrative songwriting, with the emotional draw — and communal cry-along quality — of emo’s best anthems. On Saturday night at Nashville’s Basement East, Kelly brought a dose of the purest emo around: an appearance from Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carrabba, who took the stage to offer vocals on “Mercury,” a seminal track off of 2018’s Dying Star.

Bryan Singer’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” takes on the ride of legendary British rock band Queen, as well as the life of frontman Freddie Mercury. In the film, Queen’s record label at one time resisted releasing “Bohemian Rhapsody,” perhaps one of the band’s most famous songs, as a single — but did that really happen?
In the movie, band members Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek), Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy), Brian May (Gwilym Lee) and John Deacon (Joseph Mazzello) walk into Emi Records to play their single “Bohemian Rhapsody” of their new album, “A Night at the Opera.”
However, Emi executive Ray Foster, refuses to release the song as the band’s next single following “Killer Queen,” mainly because he didn’t understand the song and also thought a six-minute tune would never play on the radio.
After a heated discussion in the film, the band storms out of the meeting with...

Near the end of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Freddie Mercury, played by Rami Malek, reveals to his bandmates in Queen that he is suffering from AIDS just before their most famous performance of all time –the 1985 Live Aid benefit show at Wembley Stadium. But while it serves as a powerful, emotional way to conclude the film’s telling of the band’s story, it’s not what actually happened in real life.
First, in the film the band is offered the opportunity to perform at Live Aid at a time when the members had gone their separate ways to work on solo projects. This is true to a certain degree, but also misleading. According to Lesley Ann-Jones’ biography “Mercury,” the band went off to work on solo projects after their 1982 album “Hot Space,” reuniting a year later to record “The Works,” the album that brought to us “Radio Ga Ga.”

Considered by most to be one of the greatest rock anthems of all time, “Bohemian Rhapsody” holds a special place in the hearts of Queen fans, and with Fox’s upcoming Freddie Mercury biopic, we’re about to learn a little more about the creative process behind the scenes, including why the song has so many high-pitch renditions of “Galileo!”
But while much praise has been showered on Rami Malek for his central performance, it seems that the film itself isn’t faring too well with critics. At the time of writing, it currently holds a 57% on Rotten Tomatoes and though that’s far from the worst score you can have, a few reviewers have been particularly harsh on it.

The film’s regular shooting commenced from June 11 in Chennai. Nivetha Pethuraj, last seen in Jayam Ravi’s Tik Tik Tik, has been roped in to play the leading lady. The film also stars Suresh Menon and veteran filmmaker Mahendran in crucial roles. Having made a comeback of sorts to acting with 2016 Tamil horror-comedy Devi, Prabhudeva has been on a signing spree. He currently awaits the release of director Vijay’s dance-based film Lakshmi. In a recent media interaction, talking about his reunion with Vijay in Lakshmi, Prabhudeva said: “My first film with Vijay was Devi, which turned out to be successful. I thoroughly loved the experience of working with him. We wanted to work again and this is when we thought of doing a sequel to Devi, and we almost went ahead with the plan. But Vijay brought the story of Lakshmi and I really liked it.” Having already starred in dance-based films such as Abcd and Abcd 2, Prabhudeva didn’t want to do another film in the same genre. “When I agreed to do the project, I told Vijay that if we do a dance-based film then it should really stand out. He had a clear vision about what he was doing and he successfully pulled it off. I believe Lakshmi will set a benchmark for dance-based films which are rare in Tamil cinema. The last 25 minutes of the film will be a dance fest, yet it’ll be highly emotional. Having made films that have appealed to all sections of the audiences, Vijay has handled a dance film in a very sensible way. Actor Lal is also part of the multilingual Saaho in the pipeline, which stars Prabhas and Shraddha Kapoor, and has been regarded as the second most expensive Indian film to be made after Baahubali. Lal was last seen in 2015 in the Tamil film Chandi Veeran, starring Atharvaa. A number of filmmakers are now dabbling with the thriller genre and are attempting to give their films a unique edge over the others. Karthik Subbaraj’s Mercury, which released in April is one such film. The silent thriller, starring Sananth Reddy, Deepak Paramesh, Anish Padman, Shashank, Remya Nambeesan, and also Prabhu Deva in a pivotal role, received overwhelmingly positive reviews on its release. The film’s crew included Sathees Kumar as the production designer, Santhosh Narayanan handling the music, and S Thirunavakkarasu working the camera. Another upcoming film in this trend is Amutha by Ps Arjun which also seems to be a thriller. The film stars Sriya Sree, Anees Shaz, Levin Simon Joseph, Ashna Sudheer, Baby Ileanor, Assisi Gibson and a bevy of other debut actors. KollywoodThis will be the first time that the actor will be collaborating with Superstar Rajinikanth.Tnm StaffIt was announced a couple of months ago that actor Rajinikanth would pair up with Jigarthanda director Karthik Subbaraj for his next film. The latest news from the industry is that actor Vijay Sethupathi will also join this bandwagon. This will be the first time that Vijay will be collaborating with Superstar Rajinikanth. Sun Pictures, the film’s producers, tweeted this update from their official Twitter handle. And as soon as the announcement was made, rumours started doing the rounds that Vijay Sethupathi is possibly the villain in the film. We are happy to announce that for the first time, Vijay Sethupathi will be acting with Superstar Rajini in #SuperstarWithSunPictures. #VijaySethupathiWithSuperstar pic.twitter.com/RZnt6ClGjm — Sun Pictures (@sunpictures) April 26, 2018 Though Rajinikanth has entered Tamil Nadu politics, he is not done with his acting career just yet. He has two films slated for release this year – Pa Ranjith's Kaala and Shankar's 2.O, the sequel to Enthiran. The superstar seems to be keen on working with younger filmmakers with fresh ideas, instead of senior directors who have been casting him in the same mold for years. Karthik Subbaraj’s recent film Mercury, a silent thriller, released a couple of weeks ago to positive reviews. The film stars Prabhu Deva, Sananth Reddy, Deepak Paramesh, Anish Padman, Shashank and Remya Nambeesan. Karthik had collaborated with Vijay most of his previous films and this latest announcement may not come as a surprise to his fans. The young director shot to fame with Pizza, a horror film which also gave Vijay great acclaim. Speaking about his upcoming project, Subbaraj confirmed in an interview to a YouTube channel, that it will be an action-thriller set against a gangster backdrop. Vijay was last seen in Arumugakumar’s Oru Nalla Naal Pathu Solren. The actor has several films lined up for release this year including Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Super Deluxe, Balaji Tharaneetharan's Seethkaathi and Mani Rathnam’s Chekka Chivandha Vaanam. Sun Pictures has previously produced Rajinikanth’s Enthiran and is also producing Vijay’s upcoming, yet to be titled film, directed by Ar Murugadoss.

“Mercury,” which has the distinction of being the first wordless steampunk zombie eco-thriller, is a movie that’s more exotic than your average international Indian release — but also, in a weird way, less exotic. It’s about five characters in their early twenties, all of whom, as children, suffered mercury poisoning at the hands of the Corporate Earth company — a fictionalized version of Unilever, whose improper disposal practices in the southern hill town of Kodaikanal resulted in death and disabilities that led, in 2001, to a major lawsuit. In “Mercury,” the five characters — four dudes and a young woman (Remya Nambeeshan) — are deaf-mutes who make avid use of what you’d call sign language, though it isn’t all that signed. Most of it is consists of simple and rather frantic hand gestures, as if people who didn’t know sign language were trying to communicate anyway.

While big Bollywood musicals have their fans, Indian cinema is not celebrated for horrors and thrillers. The dominant examples of those genres in the country tend to be unintentionally comic or formulaic and uninspired. In “Mercury,” Tamil writer-director Karthik Subbaraj aims to change that with a unique stunt — a thriller film that’s also silent. This gimmick, currently familiar to American audiences with John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place,” plays out in very different terms with Subbaraj’s movie. Whereas “A Quiet Place” found the survivors of a monster attack forced to stay silent to stay alive, the survivors in “Mercury” have no choice, because they’re all deaf and mute. The movie’s biggest setbacks have less to do with the original premise than the formulaic elements that creep in.

CinemaAhead of the release of Karthik Subbaraj's 'Mercury', we revisit 'Pesum Padam', made over 30 years ago.Anjana ShekarYoutube screengrabMost Indian films are made by the rule book - 4 songs, 3 fights. There are just a handful of exceptions that skip the duets and do away with the stunts. Post the silent era, not many Indian films without dialogues have been made. In fact, there has been just one that came out over 30 years ago, in the year 1987. Most times, we tend to go overboard with punch dialogues and gyaan-infused climax speeches, mostly delivered by the teary-eyed protagonist. With Karthik Subbaraj’s silent thriller, Mercury, slated for release this Friday, we revisit Singeetam Srinivasa Rao’s award-winning Pesum Padam that had no dialogues. This dark comedy is a rare film for many reasons. For one, it had no dialogues, songs or fight sequences. And second, the film took upon an important social issue that was widely prevalent in the '80s - unemployment - and spun a satire around it. Pesum Padam had a small set of characters played by Kamal Haasan, Amala, Tinnu Anand, Sameer Khakhar, Tl Narayana, Farida Jalal, Prathap Pothen, Loknath and Ks Ramesh. The characters in Pesum Padam have no names. We only identify them by their characterisation - the unemployed youth, the rich drunkard, the beautiful girl-next-door, the witty beggar. This, perhaps, is the reason why the film strikes a deeper chord with the audience. Uproot these characters and place them in any other city, in any other part of the world, they’d still be relatable. The film has a very simple and unsurprising story-line. A young man, hounded by poverty, finds an opportunity to live an opulent life. He takes it, finds love on the way, learns life’s most important lesson on money, and chooses to go back to his old life with a resolve to work hard and rise above. One could draw parallels with Mark Twain’s Prince and the Pauper. Except that here, there are no lookalikes and the switch is not mutually agreed upon. The film begins with the character played by Kamal. He lives in a small room on the terrace of an apartment complex that houses several families. The toilets are shared and the houses have little privacy. There are posters advertising job vacancies pinned to a pole, lines outside the toilets (whoever thought of including adavu music here needs a special mention) and shirts are laundered only around the armpits before being worn again. In one scene, when Kamal fills his tea glass with buttons and pins and a coin to make it rise up to the brim, we almost hope that he will offer it to the crow. But, obviously, we know who’s thirstier here. The character list in Pesum Padam is quite remarkable. We’ve got the young domestic worker who harbours a secret crush on Kamal, the wheelchair-bound hotel owner who has humble beginnings, the magician father whose tricks are almost believable and the squandering drunkard with a constipation problem. Then there’s the assassin who comes up with an ingenious weapon - a dagger made of ice. Sharp enough to kill, melts without a trace. Actually, why do they still use real knives to kill someone? And the best part is that he goes around with the ice-box in hand! The scene where Kamal tries to sneak into the queue for a temporary job with limited vacancies and the one where the beggar outsmarts him with his secret stash of crumpled notes are achingly sad yet funny. There are plenty of Chaplinesque sketches, especially when the killer trails him. Whoever came up with wrapping poop in huge gift boxes? Now why doesn't he flush them down the toilet like a normal person would? Remember shared toilets? The scene at the bus stand where the guy recognises Kamal and his ‘poop’ parcel is quite hilarious. Old habits die hard. While in the first night in the hotel room, he literally sleeps next to money, he’s unable to do so the next. The initial rush has died down and the quietness of the place is so alien to him that he sneaks back to his room to record the sounds of street dogs and kung-fu fights being played loud on TV. Later, he even wakes up to turn the side of the cassette. In every scene in which the telephone appears in the film, you almost expect the characters to speak. But these scenes are cleverly interrupted - calls are unanswered, the father picks up the call intended for his daughter or the rich man finds a note with an explanation. People knock on doors, clap to call out for someone or nod and smile mostly. In the scene in which the confrontation between the assassin, his employer and his lover (the rich man’s wife) takes place, we’re shut outside along with Kamal and we only get to peek in through a (sound-proof) glass door. Amala is quite brilliant in her role as the girl-next-door. There’s no head-over-heels love-at-first-sight here. The two hit it off very gradually, it is by chance that Kamal finds himself at the hotel where Amala is staying with her family. The scene where the two are seen watching a film together is the only place where dialogues are heard - through the film. The scene in which people rush and fight each other to pick up the notes on the road, while the beggar’s lifeless body is ignored for the moment, is a sharp wake-up call for Kamal. He understands that money is temperamental. The short-lived romance between him and Amala, too, withers away like a summer love. The first time she gives him a flower, he chooses to catch the flying notes (money) that slip from his hand but the second time, ironically, he picks up the flower and misses her note (letter). His brief period of luck drifts away with Amala and in the end, Kamal goes back to standing in lines outside buildings with vacancy boards. Nothing has changed, except that now, he’s willing to take the metaphorical stairs to succeed in life. The satire is admirable and at the end of the film, we’re left with a warm feeling for its characters and plenty of nostalgia. 1987/1988 was also the time when Kamal worked on films like Nayagan and Satya, the latter a drama on unemployment. Pesum Padam released in Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi under different names. The background score by L Vaithiyanathan fills the silences and complements the film perfectly. In 1987, it won Filmfare Award South for Best Film and in 1988 the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. The film also premiered at the International Film Festival of India and 1988 Cannes Film Festival in the International Critics' Week. The Kamal-Singeetam combination has given us plenty of great films including Raja Parvai, Apoorva Sagodharargal and the hilarious Michael Madhana Kamarajan. Pesum Padam is undoubtedly the silent jewel in the crown.
