William Astor, who co-founded kids TV juggernaut Silvergate Media, has stepped down as the company’s chair.
Silvergate, which was acquired by Sony Pictures Television in 2019, quietly re-branded as Sony Pictures Television – Kids in 2022.
“I can confirm I am no longer associated with Sony and have resigned as director and chairman,” Astor told Variety. He stepped down at the end of December.
Astor originally co-founded the company alongside well-known British television producer Waheed Alli back in 2011. It is best known for producing children’s animated franchises “Octonauts” — which has inspired films and theme park attractions across the world — and Nickelodeon animation “Peter Rabbit,” based on the classic children’s books by Beatrix Potter. It has also produced shows including “Hilda,” a Netflix animated series based on Luke Pearson’s graphic novels of the same name, and Nickelodeon’s “Sunny Day,” about the adventures of a young hair stylist.

It can be said without a shred of doubt that the 1990s and early 2000s were truly the golden age of Western cartoons. It was a period when not only innovative storytelling became the forte of multitudes of classic animated ventures, but every single aspect, from animation styles to voice acting to sound design, also became pioneering in its own accord. With time, Western cartoons gradually lost their charm and were eventually substituted with the anime fervor of Gen Z.
However, thanks to streaming platforms’ commitment in rejuvenating Western cartoons in recent years, a steady increase in the quality of animated adaptations is noticeable. Netflix, for instance has assembled an animated gallery that can even rival Crunchyroll’s rich anime repertoire and has offered a number of titles that can make classic cartoon fans hopeful for the genre’s future. Hilda, adapted from Luke Pearson’s children’s comic series of the same name,...

The much-loved Netflix animated series Hilda has returned with its third and final season, and along with much colorful fare and new adventures, it has concluded the story arc of the titular character in a befitting manner. The episode count is relatively shorter this time, rounding off with eight episodes only, with the series finale being over an hour long. The overarching central plot of the season concerns Hilda and Johanna’s family legacy, which is addressed primarily through the series finale and a couple of episodes in the beginning, while the rest of the season follows the usual adventure-of-the-week format. There is an undeniable feeling of this season coming to a hurried conclusion, as fans would have surely wanted to see more of the established rich lore getting explored, but it is understandable that without progression of source material, the makers aren’t willing to experiment with the established narrative too much.

You guys, we did it. It’s the end of the year, and if you’re reading this right now, it means you still have an appetite for television. And not just any television, mind you, but the best new TV shows on the market. After the year we’ve had, that’s an accomplishment. It means you made it through “Ahsoka” and “Secret Invasion,” “Citadel” and “The Continental.” Heck, you survived “The Idol,” — aka the greatest threat to HBO’s sterling reputation since David Zaslav — and you still want to watch Hollywood’s attempts at serialized TV. I salute you.
Try not to read too much into the fact that none of the aforementioned titles were Netflix originals. The de facto winner of the streaming wars still had a pretty rough year when it came to creating quality TV — or, to use the company’s preferred analogy, its “gourmet cheeseburgers” were pretty damn dry.

HBO‘s The Last of Us is one of the first hit TV shows of 2023. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are succeeding in satisfying both long-term fans of the original video game and non-gaming viewers with their portrayal of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) Lone Wolf and Cub-inspired trek post-apocalyptic America.
It is imperative to the plot that Ellie is kept alive at all costs, a distinction that was not given to Ramsey’s character Lady Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones. While learning that any resident of Westeros was fated for an early death is far from a surprise, Ramsey probably didn’t expect the news to be broken to her by her mother.

The Last of Us is the first big prestige TV show of 2023. HBO‘s adaptation of the beloved video game franchise was a highly sought-after project for many actors, especially young women hoping to take on the role of Ellie, one of the story’s two leads. Bella Ramsey of Game of Thrones fame earned the part amid plenty of competition, which included one of her former castmates on Got.
Ramsey was delighted to join the show. However, she has also had to deal with the sadly inevitable toxicity from a segment of the Last of Us fan base who have preconceived notions and an inflated sense of ownership over these characters.

Everyone who has ever played a Legend of Zelda game (at least before Breath of the Wild) knows about the Triforce. The Triforce, which consists of three golden triangles arranged in a way to form a larger triangle, is a staple of the legendary series. The Triforce even serves as the Royal Family of Hyrule’s official crest, and every now and then, a Zelda game lets players actually collect the Triforce (or at least one of its three parts)
Who actually created the legendary item, though? Well, as it turns out, the royal family didn’t appropriate the Triforce to fake some form of divine providence. Actually, the origins of the Triforce can be traced back to the origins of Hyrule itself.

Review The film opens to 74-year-old Kg George intensely watching a Federico Fellini film.Neelima MenonVeethi.comThirty minutes into the narrative we are introduced to Selma George, Kg George’s wife. She sits next to her husband and calmly recounts their 44 odd years of married life with this line— “He is a great artist but not a great family man. He has no sentiments for his family. Marriage meant only sex and good food for him. But he is undoubtedly one of the greatest filmmakers in the country.” George listens to her with an indulgent awkward smile and almost feebly cuts in— “Selma, that’s what I am.” That was perhaps the most stunningly revelatory part of that 125-minute documentary. However much of a cruel paradox that sounds, considering the repertoire of brilliantly nuanced female characters he has created on screen, anyone who has explored his filmography will be quick...

And then we came to the end.
It’s been a harrowing few months but on Thursday night, the preliminary TV awards season came to a close at the 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards, with the distribution of the organization’s first ever TV awards.
Now it’s just a waiting game. From here, it’s a mere five weeks until the end of the Emmy eligibility period, and coming weeks will see networks and streamers throw their awards machinations into high gear. This is particularly true for distributors who play in both the film and TV arenas. You can bet a place like Netflix will have a lot more time to focus on “The Crown” and “Master of None” once the campaigns for Best Picture nominees “Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Mank” have concluded.
For now, though, the TV industry has a moment to catch its breath and refill...

Pixar’s “Soul” and Cartoon Saloon’s “Wolfwalkers” swept Asifa-Hollywood’s 48th Annie Awards Friday night, with the former grabbing seven animated feature awards and the latter capturing five (plus the sponsored prize for “There’s a Monster in My Kitchen”).
The Black-led, existential fantasy “Soul” took best feature, writing, music, character animation, FX, storyboarding, and editorial. The hand-drawn Irish folk tale “Wolfwalkers” (co-produced by Apple Original Films) countered with best indie feature, direction (Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart), production design, character design, and voice acting (Eva Whittaker as Mebh).
Before sweeping the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and PGAs, “Soul” was already in a good position to win the Oscar. Now, after winning the top Annie prize, “Soul” is in a very comfortable position, with six of the last nine Annie winners agreeing with the Academy. Soul and Wolfwalkers were the big winners at the 48th annual Annie Awards for animation, which were doled out in a virtual ceremony tonight. The Disney/Pixar juggernaut strutted away with seven trophies, including Best Feature, while the “relatively small European movie” — as the filmmakers described it — snagged five wins, including Indie Feature.
After they battled it out all night, both will square off for the Academy Award next weekend against Onward, Over the Moon and A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon — all three of which went home empty-handed tonight.
On the TV side, big winners included Hilda, which picked up three awards, and Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal, which scooped a pair. Big Mouth took the writing prize, and — from a galaxy far, far away — The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Clone Wars picked up one prize apiece.

“Soul” won in the Best Feature category and took additional awards for its writing, music, FX, character animation, storyboards and editorial. “Wolfwalkers” won for Best Indie Feature as well as for directing, character design, production design and voice acting.
No other feature film won an Annie, which is given out by the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood. We’ve entered the part of the awards calendar that sees the entertainment industry’s guild organizations announcing nominations honoring the best craftspeople in their respective fields, for awards ceremonies to be held next month.
Much of the chatter around these nominations comes part and parcel with Oscar season, with analysis interpreting precisely what each new batch of nominees means for the Academy Award nominations, due to be announced on March 15.
For television, the Emmy Awards non-adherence to a January-December eligibility calendar means that all guild awards are consequently a mishmash between episodes and series already recognized by the Emmys last year and competitors whose Emmy eligibility is still outstanding.
Still, it’s always worthwhile to track what the people who know their specialized field best — the respective guilds — are holding in highest esteem, as forewarned is always forearmed when it comes to keeping an eye on the Emmy race to come.

Unsurprisingly, with just five days to go until Christmas, the focus for a lot of people has shifted solely towards festive fare, even if the ongoing effects of the Coronavirus pandemic promise a holiday season unlike any other in living memory, with restrictions being tightened around the world as the recent surge in infections shows no signs of slowing down.
Luckily, there are more than enough streaming services available to provide plenty of content to keep everyone occupied, and while Christmas movies have been dominating the Netflix Top 10 most-watched list all week, heartwarming tales of family and friendship aren’t the only titles being added to the library these days.
This week brought almost 30 new additions covering a wide variety of genres, with the biggest of the bunch being Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which sees the late Chadwick Boseman deliver a career-best performance opposite an equally fantastic Viola Davis...

We’re now officially about to enter the week before Christmas, and ahead of the festivities, the streaming giant has a few notable releases, holiday-related or otherwise, set to drop. The year is almost over. The Hargreeves kids have saved the world and Beth Harmon has checkmated her last opponent. But in its new releases for December 2020, Netflix still has some tricks up its sleeve.
For starters, Netflix is ending this most curious year with some promising original films. David Fincher’s long-awaited Mank arrives on Dec. 4 to fill us in on the story of Citizen Kane‘s screenwriter. Then on Dec. 11, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden do their best musical impression with The Prom. Chadwick Boseman’s final film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom debuts on Dec. 18. Then George Clooney rounds out the month with The Midnight Sky on Dec. 23.
But of course, it’s in the original series realm where Netflix does most of its work. The biggest one comes at month’s end this December. The final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on New Year’s Eve.

Remi Chayé’s “Calamity, a Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary,” Benoît Chieux’ “Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds” and “They Shot the Piano Player,” from Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, were among projects which caught attention at this week’s 22nd Cartoon Movie, which ran March 3-5 in the French port city of Bordeaux.

Sony Pictures Television is diving into children’s TV in a big way by buying Silvergate Media – the producer behind global hits “Octonauts,” Netflix’s “Hilda” and the “Peter Rabbit” animated series – for $195 million, Variety has learned. The acquisition marks Spt’s first move into producing kids’ TV and follows its stablemate Sony Pictures Animation’s diversification into TV series.
Spt is buying Silvergate from the current management team and Shamrock Capital. L.A.-based investment business Shamrock acquired 51% of Silvergate in 2016. Among Silvergate’s assets is a 49% stake in a joint venture formed last year with China’s Wanda Group. That entity holds the rights to “Octonauts,” the preschool animated series about a band of intrepid underwater explorers. The show started out in the U.K. and has become a global success.
Sony has also acquired a minority stake in Silvergate Bp Bidco, which owns the “Peter Rabbit” animated TV series.

Leading Miami-based international sales and distribution company FiGa Films has picked up worldwide sales rights to Agustin Banchero’s drama, “Las Vacaciones de Hilda” (“Hilda’s Short Summer”).
“The film was part of this year’s San Sebastian Int’l Film Festival’s [work in progress section] Cine en Construcción and blew us away,” said FiGa Films’ Sandro Fiorin, adding: “It is the most mature first feature I’ve seen in years.”
Produced by Virginia Bogliolo and Juan Alvarez Neme of auteur-driven Uruguayan shingle, Tarkiofilm, “Hilda” centers on the titular character whose self-imposed solitary life is upended when she hears that her son, whom she hasn’t seen in years, is coming to visit. The abrupt cancellation of his visit triggers memories of a past summer.
“Her memories of a particular summer spark an emotional pivot for the character,” said Banchero whose inspiration for his film primarily stemmed from his need to understand people close to him.
