Like all anthologies...
Switcher197225 May 2017
Like all anthologies, this one has some highs and lows but let's be clear, if you are looking for a "Creepshow"-like coherent movie, prepare to be a bit disappointed: the movie presents itself more like a honest (modest?) themed compilation of short stories from different authors and countries - USA, Italia, Germany and France if I got it right. If some of them strongly lurks in "Twilight Zone" and "Black Mirror" territories, some tries to expand into cinematic ambitions - "Alien", Caro/Jeunet's, "2001" for the most visual efforts - even the Cronenberg's "new flesh" is part of it!

So, "Galaxy of Horrors" unashamedly quotes its inspirations (50 years and counting of sci-fi) and is a work of love from semi-pro to pro teams which blends the most gruesome to the most beautiful parts of the Sci-fi/horror score, from the most clichéd to the wittiest. If you like this kind of experimental project with a touch of risk, get aboard. Not a waste of time (to me) to discover new talents.

Sorry guys...
mistermassive7 March 2017
Black Mirror, The Outter Limits and The Twilight Zone were among the legendary Science Fiction anthology films of all time. Substance and telling stories about human nature from new perspectives.

This on the other hand comes on strong and you really get the vibe from those legendary films but then falls flat after a peak midway through the series of short sci-fi short films.

I can't say much more without trash talking and pointing out that since it is an anthology they could really have tried much harder to perfect the selection (there are others out there that would have made this a top notch compilation of shorts.

Pretty weak compilation of short sci-fi and horror tales, but the several good ones do make it worth a viewing.
So as an anthology of which this is not because real anthologies direct their own stories and don't just lump together a bunch of other people's, I thought not too many of them were very good and some were only vaguely science-fiction themed from where I was looking, and I thought most of them were just sloppy and rushed and kind of all over the place like "Flesh Computer" and "Eden" and especially "Kingz" which I found moronic and especially unappealing...German rap, no thanks.. To me the highlights of the shorts were "Iris", where a man's sentient Iphone-like device gets the better of him when it disapproves of his callously murderous ways, that one had a nice easy setup and payoff and was coherent and darkly comical and macabre enough at the end that it was the one short that actually felt like it could have been in a horror comic! "Pathos" I thought was a very sharply made and grim story of dark sci-fi that sees mankind condemned to a nightmarish hell of existing as complete slaves to a ruthless computer system that was originally meant to free the mind of man from the harshness of a hopelessly polluted reality... It was very atmospheric and visually striking and a little saddening, that short had a lot going for it from a thematic standpoint, it had me pondering on it a little afterwards... Are we all going to be freakish techno slaves in the future? I liked "Entity" too because it had a lot of claustrophobic ambiance, if that's the correct word for a story about a woman lost floating in space.. It made you scared for the woman and feel her incomprehensible fear as she was drawn into the gulf of some unfathomable cosmic horror. I didn't entirely get the confusing ending but I enjoyed the buildup and the visuals of it, it had an effectively vast, celestial feel to it. And it was kinda lame but I liked the wraparound thing with the poor guy stuck in the malfunctioning cryogenic pod and forced to watch space tales of terror as his life support slowly dwindled as he failed to guess the correct password, and when he finally did it really wasn't much help! This anthology was about decent, I didn't enjoy it as much as "Minutes After Midnight", but I always like to see as many new short films as I can to hopefully find the gems, and this didn't really have any, but sci-fi short films are always hit and miss and tricky to do well compared to the horror ones. Not particularly good but it's worth a look at least once for the better stories. Enjoyable!!

Cheap thrills movie, Very low quality in story telling.
Eyerobot23 May 2017
Honestly, These short movies aren't worth the bother to watch. there is no time to build up a story line, And the editing so chopped up, that it's almost like watching clippings that don't belong together. This movie also represents everything that is wrong with modern movies. It goes straight for the nudity and gore, And sacrifices credibility as a trade off. I do not recommend it, Unless your into cheap thrills.

Terrible Anthology
claudio_carvalho10 April 2017
"Galaxy of Horrors" is a terrible anthology of eight sci-fi / horrors shorts.

The lead story of a man trapped in a malfunctioning cryogenic pod is absolutely boring.

The segments "Eden", "Flesh Computer" "Pathos" and "Eveless" are gruesome and unbearable.

The segments "Entity" and "Kingz" are watchable, but not good.

The segment "Iris" is reasonable and can be watched.

Only "They Will All Die in Space" is the only one worthwhile watching.

The IMDb User Rating (4.9) is overrated. My vote is two.

Absolute waste of time
mhorg20188 May 2017
There are two types of movie genres I hate. One is found footage which, lets face it, has had it's day (if it ever did). Why are morons running around filming things while they are being killed? This film is the second kind, an anthology film. Most of these have been absolute garbage. I can name maybe four anthologies worth watching; the original Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, the House that Dripped blood and Asylum. That's about it. I decided to give this a shot when I saw that Rue Morgue, the best horror magazine around had a part in this. Having sat through this atrocious mess, I have to wonder, what part was that? Did they see a different script? This film is barely better than one of the toilet floating turds that The Asylum constantly cranks out. One stupid, uninteresting story after another (no spoilers, friends) linked by this stupid guy in a failing cryogenic tube is just an absolute waste of time. I'd expect to see Last Chance Lance review this in his column, and I'm pretty sure he won't be happy doing it. There isn't one part of this that's worth watching and I'm wondering if those who reviewed this floater are all relatives of those who made this crap. Final comment: If I were a film professor these 'shorts' would all get a nice fat F. Avoid at all costs.

Bits and pieces...
tattoopig9 March 2017
I was expecting this film to be awful...I'm not a fan of film anthologies, but this came recommended by a friend who knows his movies, so I thought, what the hell, let's do this! 8 little SciFi/Horror films (not just stories, but actual little films) presented in such a professional way, you forget it's all being done on a small Indie budget. Each film feels and looks like it could be a full length feature.

Although I didn't "get" one or two of the pieces, it is all so well done that it kept me highly entertained. Acting, direction, lightning, set design...it is all really good - none of it feels cheap or amateurish.

This won't win any awards, but it's fun. Watch it. I think you'll be surprised.

PS: Don't let the cheap and nasty cover art put you off!

Nauseating mess
Luv2Spooge8 April 2022
The 2nd story, Iris, was pretty good. The rest were confusing and nauseating. The script made no sense and the filming was dark and shaky. Overall a very terrible film.

from excellent to boredom
trashgang13 March 2017
Compilation of 8 sci-fi flicks. All in the horror genre and I must say that they were all different. And well promoted because when you are researching the only picture you came across is a full frontal naked woman. She's in it that's for sure but it's not all glory.

The first story (with the naked chick) and the last story are the best ones. The first one is about some kind of zombies with some nasty shots but it's the last one that has it all. Good story because you can't see what's coming. And it's gory indeed.

Other stories do have their moments but lack of suspense sometimes. Still, the effects used are really well done. But the script isn't always sublime, for example the Italian entry isn't worth seeing.

Just above mediocre.

Very good, 8 stories for the price of 1.
jeanmarcvdlinden11 March 2017
Can't believe this title only gets a 4.7. It's actually very good.

It's well done and very entertaining. Fighting scenes in the last chapter is spectacular for those who like some cool Martial Arts action!

Reminds me of Tales from the Crypt, or even better Twilight Zone (the movie) but with an Outer Space theme. So if you're a SF lover, you shouldn't miss this one!

Sure, things can always be better: one reviewer criticised too much in my opinion. He was right, but among all Hollywood crap that's being produced nowadays, Galaxy of Horrors really does stand out, I think it's one of those little gems that any SF lover must have seen. At least give it a try and judge for yourself!

Definitely worth watching!!! I want more!!!

Very underrated.
jacobjohntaylor127 October 2017
If you are looking for something scary to watch this Halloween see this movie. It is very scary. It has great story lines. It also great acting. It also has great special effects. I do not know why people are giving it a 4. That is just underrating it. This is so mush better then Sinister. This one of the scariest movies I have seen. I give this movie 6. It is very underrated. It is so mush better then The Bride of Chucky. If you are looking of a good horror movie this is the one to see. It is very scary. If it does not scary you no movie will. It is very creative. See it. It is a great movie. It very very scary. Scarier then The silence of the lambs could ever be. If you like science fiction stories you will like this movie.

Scientists need to watch more Science Fiction
dncorp11 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This gives a little bit of insight into how Italians, Germans, and the other Foreign Nation segments think (about the Future).

Over the Decades I have observed lots of Science Fiction becoming Science Fact.

Having had a lot of interest in Space, Space Travel, and some Training with NASA. I really strongly believe that most NASA Scientists really need to watch as much Space related Science Fiction, so that they can create solutions to the problems that they may have overlooked that have been identified by Science Fiction.

Some things that must be "invented", a Space "Lifeboat". A system for Astronauts in a standard spacesuit with minimal additional equipment to reenter the Earth's (or another Planet's) Atmosphere (idea from Popular Science, 1970s). Radiation and Ion Storm protection. Laser and multi frequency communications relay stations. Inexpensive Emergency Expandable Space Stations. Space based factories and manufacturing plants with solar furnaces with space tugs go gather up all the "space junk" to be recycled. Missile sections (stages) with missile motors that instead of falling back to Earth and burning up, go into Space and are used to build with, new space stations, large interplanetary space craft, space docks and or spacecraft yards, more plants and or factories, long range space tugs to gather asteroids meteors to be processed by the space plants and factories. A space to Earth cargo and passenger elevator. Thorium Nuclear Reactors.

Basically just another horror anthology, but with a sci-fi twist...
paul_haakonsen12 April 2021
I was drawn in by this 2017 movie's cover, as it was rather interesting, and I must admit that I opted to watch the movie based on the cover alone. I hadn't even bothered reading the synopsis or checking IMDb first. So I didn't know that I was in for a sci-fi horror anthology.

And "Galaxy of Horrors" is exactly that - like almost every other horror anthology out there. The eight segments and the narrative that ties them together were of various degrees of production value, entertainment value and such. Of course they were. It would be silly to say otherwise. Some of the segments were good and watchable, while others were just mediocre, bland or pointless. So this is definitely a bag of mixed goodies.

While "Galaxy of Horrors" was watchable, it was not an outstanding or memorable anthology. In fact, I doubt I will even remember it in about a week's time or so. There are far better and way more enjoyable - and memorable - horror anthologies out there, if you enjoy horror anthologies. Some of the stories were good, others were bland.

The acting in the anthology was also of a very varied degree. Some acting performances were good, some were dubious, some were bland, but I will not say that anyone was outright bad or poor.

Visually then "Galaxy of Horrors" was surprisingly good. There were a good display of effects, but of course, some segments fared better than others. The most outstanding here was the "Entity" segment.

Ultimately then "Galaxy of Horrors" was just another run-of-the-mill horror anthology, for better or worse. So you basically know what you are getting here before sitting down to watch "Galaxy of Horrors", if you opt to read the synopsis or check IMDb first.

My rating of the 2017 anthology "Galaxy of Horrors" lands on a less than mediocre four out of ten stars.

Cycle of chaos
nogodnomasters24 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A man awakes from cryo-sleep due to a malfunction and doesn't get to play hide the sausage with Jennifer Lawrence. Instead it is like MST-3000 and he is forced to watch eight science fiction horror anthologies. Most of them deal with a grim future world, some take place in space. There are two foreign language clips with English subtitles. Rapping in German should be a crime. Most of the features reminded me of other films. Thank you for avoiding any sound when a ship explodes in space. One clip involves a new model smart phone called Iris. There is also a birth by C-section, aliens taking over humans, a fantasy plug-in on the head, AI, and another man raised early from cyro-sleep. I would say none of the clips were bad, although the one in Italian started to wear on me. A few had clever endings.

Guide: F-word. Nudity in first feature.

some are actually pretty good
surfisfun12 March 2017
This anthology deserve 6 or more stars. I fast forwarded on two episodes ,my choice. I rate it a 7.2, worth watching and interesting . my guess is it is a low budget project and I like one is in Italian and another one in some east European language. I wish for more anthology like this, you are not stuck an hour n half with one story stretched with drama . One story I knew where the ending was going but it was still top notch. it doesn't have to be unpredictable to be good but good cast and tempo, yes. Thanks Rue Morgue to bring this to the public and keep on the anthologies. I would appreciate some sci-fi from Asia included too ,as long its subtitle in English.

Underrated
frlrd21 December 2021
This movie is much better than the average rating.

The short films are very uneven in quality.

Some of them are pretty good, indeed.

True sci.fi fans are more conciliatory.

Im one of those, watching sci.fi since 5 years old, 55 now.

As a whole, this is good.

Not Bad
vengeance204 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Bought this on DVD last year in HMV after having a real good comb through the Horror DVD Section. Hidden in a tight corner I found this film, which looked older than what it was given the 90's cover art style. But never round to watching til now.

The film is an analogy type of film with multiple different stories wrapping around a main one. Much like that of VHS's 1-3, ABCs of Death 1-3 or Tales of Halloween, Holidays to even the All Hallows Eve Films. So Galaxy Of Horrors is much like them films only it's set in space.

Now I've never been one for Sci-Fi Films generally, and have never bothered with them regardless of what type genre they've been set in. But since watching 1997s Event Horizon, I've slowly began to like the blend of Horror & Sci-Fi. So when I picked this one up, I knew I had to have it! It was unique looking also & looked like a good watch.

So from watching the 100 minute film I have to say it wasn't bad at all! Pretty good to be honest. Though off in a few areas & a bit difficult to understand, the 8 short stories were good enough & wrapped around the simple story-line of an astronaught trapped in an escape pod.

Here's a run down of the 8 shorts:

1. Eden

This one talks about the apocalypse in Russia (I think). Not to sure exactly what it was about, but it involved a woman who was part of an experiment and then started gnawing people off while the president was going to give his "speech".

I liked this one despite not knowing exactly what the story was about or what was happening as such. But it gory, bloody and pretty sinister all the way!

2. Iris

This one was basically about a new type of Smart Phone that could speak & interact with its users like a human being. A young has killed a woman and is trying to win a competition of some kind, but the "Phone" Isis, threatens to exploit the user & then tries to turn the tables on him.

A pretty straight forward premise. Sinister, twisted & dark in a couple of ways! But pretty good overall.

3. Flesh Computer

A loner of a young man has a half human, half computer in his room. But 2 of his "mates" who bully him, end up being victims to the mans half human, half computer friend.

Not all that of an interesting segment to be fair, but alright for what it was. Hard to get at first, but easy once you knew what it was.

4. Pathos

A man whose been born & raised in a bunker via an attached to a cable from his head, gets to choose different types of emotions & feelings via metal cards through money transactions. But something goes wrong & from bad to worse the man begins to lose his senses which threaten death.

This one was pretty good if not sad as you really felt for the man in this one who was being slowly tortured by this computer who was giving him a time limit in entering codes to give him emotions. Pretty good, but pretty sad at the same time.

5. Eveless

A man who gives birth to an alien like creature.

This one was not great, not very interesting & pretty bland as it didn't last long.

6. They Will All Die In Space

This segment involved a space craft underseige by one of the crew members.

Hard to understand exactly was going on in this one given that the story wasn't obvious or outstanding. It was alright at best. And very bland at worst.

7. Entity

This segment is about an astronaught who gets lost in space & finds herself in an unknown planet.

Again, not to sure on the story because of the blurred narrative. But this one was better to understand than the other segments here.

8. Kingz

A drug deal goes wrong & the drug lord is an android killer who turns out to be some sinister alien creature.

This one was easier to understand, if not more straight forward & not abstract. It was gory & visually great in a lot of areas!

Overall the film was not a bad watch! It had some great moments, some bland, boring I-don't-understand-what-the-hell-is-going-on types of moments. But it was good overall. I'd say I liked most of the segments, but the others could've been better explained & made easier to follow.

Overall 8/10
