My hobby is watching and collecting movies on VHS and DVD. On 17 June 2003, I found the IMDB site through an indication of a friend. My first review was "Anazapta" and since then, when I finish watching a movie, I write my personal opinion about it.
I am eclectic, but my genre number 1 is horror. I see between 800 and 900 movies per year, including TV series ("Sex and the City", "Angel", "Buffy", "Six Feet Under", "Lost" etc.).
My favorite movie is "Casablanca" and it is hard to point out my favorite director, actor and actress. I usually do not read any review before seeing a movie, in order to be not influenced by the critics.
I am trying to list my favorite movies alphabetically ordered, but this list may change:

The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968)
Dull and Boring
The newly married Rebecca (Marianne Faithful) leaves her husband, the school teacher Raymond (Roger Mutton) and drives her motorcycle to meet her lover Daniel (Alain Delon) in Heldelberg. While crossing Europe, she recalls some moments of Raymond's life and how she met Daniel at her father's bookstore and then in an inn.
"The Girl on a Motorcycle" is a dull and boring movie with a story that is a rip-off of the cult "Easy Rider". Most of the time the camera shows the beautiful face of Marianne Faithful smiling and the story is limited to the storyline. The motorcycle in both movies is the symbol of freedom and the tragic conclusion is alike. The poor image and sound on the DVD seems to be from a VHS. My vote is four.
Title (Brazil): "A Garota da Motocicleta" ("The Girl of the Motorcycle")
Meeting Venus (1991)
A Classy Movie
The Hungarian conductor Zoltan Szanto (Niels Arestrup) is invited to conduct Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner in Paris. Szanto has to face problems with the ego of the artists, strikes and his family since he falls in lover with the diva Karin Anderson (Glenn Close). But in the end, his love for Karin and passion for Wagner bring redemption to him.
One movie that I regret that has not been released on DVD or Blu-Ray in Brazil is "Meeting Vênus", of 1991 from the critically acclaimed Hungarian director István Szabó and with Glenn Close in the top of her career in the role of a problematic diva.
Using the staging of opera "Tannhäuser" by Richard Wagner in Paris as background, this wonderful feature is a satire of the unification of Europe that was happening in that historical moment through the ego of the musicians from different countries in the orchestra where the character of Glenn Close is the lead attraction.
Just as information, Vênus is the mundane woman or goddess that the troubadour Tannhäuser has sex in the medieval legend that the opera is based.
The mime of Glenn Close, dubbed by Kiri Te Kanawa, is perfect and the climax of this movie is the entrance of the artists singing Pilgrims Chant in the opera house and Szanto's stick blossoming. I have seen this scene several times on my VHS that I have seen at least four times. My vote is ten.
Title (Brazil) : "Encontro com Vênus" ("Meeting Venus")
The Fight between Pure and Carnal Love
The painter Tannhäuser (Peter Seiffert) is charmed and makes profane love with the goddess Venus (Béatrice Uria-Monzon). He casts out her spell and goes to a contest in an art gallery with other painters. However he is banished by the other painters and only the virgin Elisabeth (Petra Maria Schnitzer) that loves him defends Tannhäuser. He is forced to join a group of pilgrims to Rome to find atonement and follow the path to salvation. Later when the pilgrims return from Rome, the sinner Tannhäuser tells to Wolfram von Eschenbach (Markus Eiche) that he was not blessed with grace and absolution despite his journey of sacrifice through Italy. The sinner Tannhäuser summons Venus and her realm of love back. However Elisabeth plea to God is listened and Tannhäuser is blessed and his soul gains the grace of heaven.
"Tannhauser" is an opera by Richard Wagner divided in three acts and based on the fight between pure and carnal love. This modern version changes the original medieval story to the present days and Tannháuser is not a troubadour but a painter despite of the lyrics. This is the first time that I see this opera and I really loved it. The first act is unusual, with the beautiful Béatrice Uria-Monzon completely naked and a strange bacchanal scene. The second act in an art gallery is also different. The conclusion shows the fight between the profane and the sacred loved wined by Elisabeth. The Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu, the choral and the singers have outstanding work. The theater has an excellent acoustic and the DVD is marvelous. My vote is ten.
Title (Brazil): "Tannhäuser"
The Equalizer (2014)
Great Action Thriller
In Boston, Massachusetts, the methodical and supportive Robert "Bob" McCall (Denzel Washington) works at the Home Mart store, frequently helping his co-workers. Every night, McCall goes to a diner to read a book and drink tea, and he befriends the teenager Russian prostitute Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), the alias of Alina.
One night, Alina's pimp Slavi (David Meunier) brutally beats her and she goes to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the local hospital. McCall goes to the Russian restaurant where Slavi is and offers US$ 9,800.00 for the freedom of Alina. However Slavi does not accept the offer and McCall kills him and his four bodyguards. The Russian mafia kingpin Vladimir Pushkin (Vladimir Kulich) sends the cruel enforcer Teddy (Marton Csokas) to find who killed his men. Soon he finds that McCall is the one who killed the mobster and Teddy begins a war against him. Who is the dangerous McCall?
"The Equalizer" is a great action thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua. Denzel Washington is perfect, as usual, in the role of a vigilante that protects his friends against the Russian mobsters and corrupt police detectives. The movie is highly entertaining, with a great villain. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "O Protetor" ("The Protector")
The Brown Bunny (2003)
Looking for Daisy
After racing in New Hampshire, the lonely motorcycle racer Bud Clay (Vincent Gallo) drives his van in a five-day journey to California for the next race. Along his trip, he meets fan, lonely women, prostitutes, but he leaves them since he is actually looking for the woman he loves, Daisy (Chloë Sevigny). He goes to her house and leaves a note telling where he is lodged. Out of the blue, Daisy appears in his hotel room and soon he learns why he cannot find her.
"The Brown Bunny" is an independent very low budget movie by Vincent Gallo. The plot is developed in slow pace and is dull and boring in many moments. The revelation of Daisy's secret is totally unexpected. However the movie has become famous only because of the unnecessary fellatio of Chloë Sevigny, maybe to satisfy Vincent Gallo's ego, since does not add anything but a polemic scene to this movie in a poor hype. My vote is five.

Lady in the Lake (1947)
Original and Unique Film-Noir
In New York, the cynical private detective Phillip Marlowe (Robert Montgomery) is summoned by the editor of the Kingsby Publications Adrienne Fromsett (Audrey Totter) that seems to be interested in a book he has written. Fromsett convinces her boss Derace Kingsby (Leon Ames) to pay a little fortune for Marlowe's book since she wants to hire Marlowe to find the missing wife of her boss named Chrystal. Fromsett is a gold-digger and expects the divorce of Kingsley to catch him.
Marlowe follows the only lead he has and visits the crook Chris Lavery (Dick Simmons) at home in Bay City. However Lavery hits him and simulates that Marlowe was DUI. He is arrested by the brutal Lieutenat DeGarmot (Lloyd Nolan), but on the next morning he is released from the jail by Captain Kane (Tom Tully). On the Christmas Eve, Marlowe goes to Kingsley's house by the lake to seek out his wife but he finds that she is still missing and a woman named Mildred Havelend (Jayne Meadows) has died in the lake. Marlowe visits Lavery again and meets his landlord, Mrs. Falbrook; then he finds Lavery murdered in the bathtub. Now Marlowe suspects of Chrystal, Fromsett and Kingsby. Who might be the killer?
"Lady in the Lake" is an original and unique film-noir. The camera is actually the eyes of the lead character, Phillip Marlowe, in an experimental and revolutionary style. The viewer occasionally sees Marlowe, usually when he looks at a mirror. Therefore, the camera work is magnificent, and sometimes it is difficult to guess where it is located. For example, when Marlowe is driving, where might be the camera positioned? In addition, "Lady in the Lake" is a movie without soundtrack. My vote is eight.
Title (Brazil): "A Dama do Lago" ("The Lady of the Lake")
Happy Birthday to Me (1981)
The Birthday Party
The teenager Virginia Wainwright (Melissa Sue Anderson) studies in the traditional Crawford Academy and belongs to a group of wealthy friends named The Top Ten. Virginia had a serious car accident a couple of years ago where her mother died. Now she lives with her father and is psychologically treated by the prominent Dr. David Faraday (Glenn Ford). She has also frequent blackouts but she is slowly recovering her memory. When one by one of her friends are murdered and disappears, Virginia starts to believe that she is the killer, but Dr. Faraday does not think so. Who might be the serial-killer?
"Happy Birthday to Me" is a creepy slasher with a good story with many twists. When it seems to have disclosed the killer and the motive, there is one last unexpected twist that surprises the viewer. The conclusion is extremely dark and makes this movie one of the best in the genre. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "Feliz Aniversário para Mim" ("Happy Birthday to Me")
The Sacrament (2013)
Good Story in an Irritating Genre
The journalist Patrick (Kentucker Audley) works at the VICE, a company dedicated to cover bizarre news. When his sister Caroline (Amy Seimetz) joins a community, she travels abroad with her new family. Out of the blue, Caroline invites her brother to visit her in an undefined country and Patrick travels by helicopter with his friends Jake (Joe Swanberg) and Sam (AJ Bowen) that work with him at VICE.
They find weird that the men that have come to guide them to the Eden Parish have guns. On the arrival to the camp, Patrick, Sam and Jake find a community of happy people that worship Father (Gene Jones). They interview Father but soon they realize that people are not as happy as they seem to be. Further, they find that they are trapped in the Parish Eden and they want to leave the place with the newcomers. But the Father does not have intention to let them go.
"The Sacrament" is a suspenseful horror movie with a music score in the beginning that recalls "The Twilight Zone". However this awful "found- footage" genre spoils the creepy story. The Dogma 95 has only 77 recognized movies, but this rip-off of the genre seems to be the easiest means to produce cheap low-budget movies in the present days. My vote is five.
Title (Brazil): "O Sacramento" ("The Sacrament")
In Fear (2013)
Good Acting Wasted by a Terrible Story
In Ireland, Tom (Iain De Caestecker) and Lucy (Alice Englert) are traveling for a music festival. They have been together for a couple of weeks only and Tom decides to make a surprise to Lucy and spend the night with her in a remote hotel in the woods. They follow the signs on the narrow and winding road and soon they realize that they are lost and the backwoods road is a maze. Soon they are frightened by a stranger that threatens them and Tom realizes that their car is running out of gas. While escaping from the stranger, they hit a man on the road and they bring him to their car. The stranger is called Max (Allen Leech) and soon they discover that he is the man that is tormenting them along the night. What is the motive for Max to torture them?
"In Fear" is a tense thriller with good performances. Unfortunately the good acting is wasted by a terrible story full of holes and awful conclusion. Who would go to a remote place without filling the tank of the car? How could one guy bring so many people to a derelict hotel in the middle of nowhere without any investigation from the police? The plot has a promising beginning but in a certain moment it becomes annoying. My vote is three.

Under the Dome: Outbreak (2013)
Another Average Episode

Out of the blue, he faints. Junior is attacked by Angie and keeps her locked up in the shelter. She accidentally breaks a pipe of water and the shelter is flooded. Julia discover that there is a cabin where he husband might be and she flees from the quarantined hospital. She faints and Barbie saves her. Big Jim finds Angie locked up in his shelter.
"Outbreak" is another average episode of "Under the Dome". Let's see the reaction of Big Jim with his discovery. My vote is seven.
