Japanese actor Kazuki Kitamura and Malaysia’s Bront Palarae are starring in HBO Asia’s new horror anthology Folklore, which is in production.
Six leading Asian directors are each shooting one hour-long episode of the original series, including Joko Anwar (Indonesia), Takumi Saitoh (Japan), Lee Sang-Woo (Korea), Ho Yuhang (Malaysia), Eric Khoo (Singapore) and Pen-Ek Ratanaruang (Thailand).
Kitamura, whose credits include Godzilla: Final Wars and Kill Bill: Volumes 1 & 2, will star in the episode directed by Saitoh, a well-known Japanese actor who recently starred in Khoo’s Ramen Teh.

Yuhang Ho was trained as an engineer but went into film-making due to his love for vintage films. He began his career by shooting commercials in the mid 1990’s. In 2000, he co-directed a Malaysian documentary “Semangat Insan: Masters of Tradition” highlighting the need to preserve Malaysia’s traditional art forms. He then made his feature film directorial debut in the 2003 film “Min”.He went to receive international recognition for his film “Rain Dogs”, won the New Talent Award at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival 2006 and also named best director at the Festival of the Three Continents in 2006.

Yuhang Ho had a very difficult task in his hands from the beginning: to shoot an action martial arts film where all of his protagonists are (almost) over 50. The Osaka Asian Film Festival throws open its doors once again this Friday for nine days of new cinema gathered from across Asia. The Opening Gala will include a screening of Yuhang Ho’s Hong Kong action drama Mrs K and a celebration of the film’s lead, Kara Wai. The actress will be present on the night to accept the festival’s Osaka Asian Star award, which honours artists who have played an important role in the Asian film world, and to give a talk on her career and many accomplishments. Kara Wai broke into the film industry in the mid 70’s, quickly developing a reputation for her action-orientated roles in Shaw Brothers films like My Young Auntie and the Jackie Chan-produced The Inspector Wears Skirts series....

Set to kick off on March 3, there's now less than a month to go before Osaka throws open the doors on its annual celebration of Asian cinema. As previously announced, Hong Kong/Malaysian action effort Mrs K is set to start proceedings on opening night. Featuring Kara Wai and Simon Yam, the film is directed by Ho Yuhang. Closing the festival on March 12 is the Hashimoto Ai and Sometani Shota starring teen music drama Parks, from director Seta Natsuki. Upcoming 27th edition to open with Asian premiere of Dain Iskandar Said’s Interchange on November 23.
The 27th Singapore International Film Festival (Sgiff) has unveiled its full line-up, comprising 161 titles from 52 countries across 13 sections.
The selection includes 16 world premieres, nine international premieres and 18 Asian premieres.
Among them are new features by masters such as Garin Nugroho, Lav Diaz, Tran Anh Hung, Naomi Kawase, Fruit Chan, Anurag Kashyap, Reha Erdem, Trinh Minh-ha, Kirill Serebrennikov, Kelly Reichardt and Ken Loach, many of whose earlier works were previously screened at the festival, according to programme director Zhang Wenjie.
In addition to the masters, Wenjie adds that a number of new filmmakers from Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Philippines, Mongolia, Japan, Nepal, Turkey, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, France, Latin America, Taiwan, Singapore and the Us are featured across various sections.
