Superhost is the third film by writer/director Brandon Christensen (Still/Born) and the first that wasn’t co-written with Colin Minihan. It’s also the first that doesn’t revolve around parenthood. How well has he managed to change things up? And can he bring something new to a pair of well-worn plots, the Airbnb from hell and YouTubers getting more of a story than they bargained for?
Teddy and Claire are co-hosts of the YouTube channel Superhost! as well as being a couple off-screen. He’s even planning to propose to her when they film their next segment.
But all is not well in the world of Airbnb reviews. Their subscriber count has been dropping due to their unsensational content. They rent a remote cabin only to find that the access code has been changed.

Directed by Bradford Baruh & Meghan Leon, Night Drive is now available in select theaters and on Digital/VOD and we have an exclusive clip just for Daily Dead viewers! The clip below features co-stars Aj Bowen and Sophie Dalah, and we were fortunate to have co-director Bradford Baruh provide us with some backstory on both the making of the film and the scene you're about to watch:
When Meghan Leon and I were developing Night Drive, we discussed the positives and negatives of shooting a car-based feature. The simplicity of set-ups and the small scale were great in terms of showcasing these two wonderful actors and keeping our budget where it needed to be, but it also creates a visual challenge. Small car interiors are always hard to shoot as it can threaten to make things repetitive and really restrict the ability to keep the visuals dynamic; after all it...

Dark Sky Films have announced the August 6th US theatrical and digital release of Night Drive, a shocking ride with a wicked sense of humor from the filmmakers behind the cabin-in-the-woods thriller Dead Night.
Russell is a driver in Los Angeles who’s reeling from a series of bad decisions. While his life seems to be caught in a downward spiral, a business proposition from an alluring but enigmatic passenger named Charlotte proves too good to turn down. A simple ride turns deadly, catapulting Russell into an even darker place, but Charlotte may be the key to a second chance he thought he’d never have… if he can make it through the night.
Surprising at every turn and with a wickedly dark sense of humor, directors Meghan Leon’s and Bradford Baruh’s Night Drive is an unforgettably shocking ride-along with a seemingly normal man and the most abnormal of passengers…...

There may be no one in independent horror having more of a moment right now than Brea Grant. As an actor, she starred in one of the best horror movies of 2020, After Midnight, and now The Stylist, already one of the best horror movies of 2021. As a writer, she’s responsible for Lucky (in which she also stars), an ambitious and inventive horror film about female fear that’s now available to stream on Shudder. As writer and director, she’s responsible for 12 Hour Shift, a bloody black comedy starring Angela Bettis as a drug-addicted nurse caught up in an organ harvesting scheme that goes bad; it was one of 2020’s best movies, full stop. The lesson from all of this? Give Brea Grant the keys to everything.
One of the infinite number of things that’s great about the Texas-born actor, writer, and director is her commitment to indie horror.

In Night Drive, a comedy of errors unfolds after a ride-share app driver (Aj Bowen) picks up an intriguing young woman (Sophie Dalah) and quickly realizes that his passenger is about to keep him on his toes in some very unexpected ways. Night Drive recently celebrated its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2019, and Daily Dead sat down with both of the film’s directors, Meghan Leon and Brad Baruh, as well as the cast – Bowen, Dalah and Scott Poythress – to hear about their experiences collaborating on Night Drive, how their tight-knit group came together throughout production on the darkly comedic holiday romp (yay for more Christmas-centric movies!), and more!
If we could start with you, Meghan and Brad, and talk about the story. It’s very ambitious, but it’s all condensed within this one night, so were there any unique challenges for you, in terms of hitting those narrative high points?...

I have mentioned many many times that I absolutely love Christmas movies. And I mean any type of movie that has that great Christmas feeling – romantic comedy? Aslong as it’s set at Christmas, I’ll probably like it! So when horror and Christmas collide I am always first in line to watch it.
That said, I Trapped The Devil doesn’t exactly have a ‘Christmas spirit’ but it is set at Christmas, and the season does play a part in the movie. This actually had a bit of a Krampus feel to it at times (only with zero comedy). The ‘unhappy family Christmas but stuck with each other for now’ setting felt familiar. Perhaps strangely, the Christmas lights were something that stuck out while watching the movie. They add this brightly coloured...

Revered eighties horror icon Barbara Crampton is as popular now as she’s ever been, largely due to the next generation of horror directors who came of age watching her earlier work who are now casting her in their own genre offerings. Guest of honour at this year’s Grimmfest in Manchester, Crampton also cropped in three of the films screening there, including a welcome revisit of the aforementioned Stuart Gordon classic in which she initially made her name, the intriguingly-structured cabin in the woods horror Dead Night, and the hilarious and gore-filled Puppet Master reboot, entitled Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich.
We had to change to grab some time with Crampton during the festival – she also participated in some fun post-screening Q&As for her films – where we talked about the legacy of her work from decades back, and the more hands-on approach she enjoys taking with some of her recent films.

You want batshit? Bradford Baruh’ll give you batshit, pulled together from a hefty helping of blood and guts, a cast of cult genre pros and more twists, turns and “Wtf?” exclamations than you can possibly shake a stick at. His cabin-in-the-woods heavy debut is the very epitome of ‘out-there’ horror storytelling, meshing a classic slasher template with everything from Wicker Man-esque tribal frights, to TV-movie true crime docs. It’s mad, and uncomfortable, and it really doesn’t work all that well, but you have to salute the man for trying – there’s more creativity and hardcore genre know-how here than most of the year’s big studio horror movies put together.
Dead Night used to be called Applecart, but neither title really lives up to just how unhinged this whole set-up is. Brea Grant and Aj Bowen star as squabbling parents dragging their children out into the woods for a much-needed winter vacation.

I can see some people already rolling their eyes when they hear about another ‘cabin in the woods’ style horror movie. Yes there has been a lot of them in the last 5, 10, even 20 years but plenty of good ones. I was hoping Dead Night would be one of these good ones.
It at least tries to do things differently. Not long after it begins, we are told what is going to happen in the movie via a TV documentary. Those kind of shows that explain ‘real-life’ crime and have ‘re-enactments’ when there’s no actual footage. But this show only shows one side of the story and the movie itself shows something that turns out completely different.

Barbara Crampton takes on a devilishly fun role in Dead Night, now in select theaters and on VOD courtesy of Dark Sky Films. Also starring Brea Grant and Aj Bowen, the movie follows a family (parents played by Grant and Bowen) that heads to a remote cabin in Oregon and stumbles across a mysterious woman, played by Barbara Crampton, who is passed out in the snow. Unfortunately for the family, this mysterious woman is anything but helpless and the night quickly turns deadly.
I caught up with Barbara Crampton to talk to her about taking on this fun and different role, reteaming with Brea Grant and Aj Bowen, what she looks for when taking on a new genre role, and she also talks about her upcoming roles in Reborn and the Castle Freak remake:

*there are spoilers here. Director: Brad Baruh. Writers: Irving Walker and Brad Baruh. Cast: Elise Luthman, Joshua Hoffman, James Bartz, Mikie Beatty, Joseph Bishara, Aj Bowen, Shauna Case and Jagger Chase. Good night or Dead Night, the name of this feature, is a euphemism trying to be developed in this creature feature, slasher cum cabin in the wood scenario. Here, the Pollack family are about to arrive at a retreat. James (Aj Bowen) has cancer and the forest sanctuary they are going to has a mystic reputation for healing. Just how that works is uncertain. I can guess that's due to either ley lines or a meteorite that crashed at this spot over a millennia ago. Both are implied. Casey (Brea Grant) and their children, Jessica (Sophie Dalah) and Jason (Joshua Hoffman), are together for some family bonding time. By all indications, James is dying. Tagging along is Jessica’s...

Zombies, Murder, and Gore – Oh my! I’ve never been much of a horror buff and I’m not one to get excited when a new horror film comes out unless it’s some sort of a psychological thriller. That being said, I do have a few favorite films from the genre and I do appreciate what the genre has done for the industry, so I hope you readers can hear me out. Dark Sky Films’ Dead Night directed by Brad Baruh (Bradford) is completely insane.
During a family trip to a cabin in the snowy woods, the Pollacks encounter a stranger that will turn what was supposed to be a fun getaway to the Pollacks wanting to get away – fast. The stranger (Barbara Crampton) unleashes terror on the family and a mother (Brea Grant) begins to lose her sanity. The film tells two different perspectives which makes for more chaos.

On the edge of the Antartic Circle, in the years after World War I, a steam ship approaches a desolate island far from all shipping lanes. On board is a young man, on his way to assume the lonely post of weather observer, to live in solitude for a year at the end of the world. But on shore he finds no trace of the man whom he has been sent to replace, just a deranged castaway who has witnessed a horror he refuses to name. The rest is forest, a deserted cabin, rocks, silence, and the surrounding sea.

"I was born and raised in these woods… I'll be just fine."
Yeah... right. We all know what happens when people think the woods is a good place to go on a relaxing vacation. Dark and sinister things happen and people die! That's the truth because it happens in every horror movie that is set in the woods!
We've got a creepy trailer for an upcoming horror film called Dead Night, and it actually looks like it's worth checking out. But that's coming from a guy who loves watching horror movies, even the bad ones. I like what I'm seeing in this trailer, though, it looks like it going to be a wildly eerie horror flick with some surprising twists and turns.
The movie stars Brea Grant (Heroes) and 80's horror icon Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, You're Next, From Beyond) and this is the synopsis:

Yeah... right. We all know what happens when people think the woods is a good place to go on a relaxing vacation. Dark and sinister things happen and people die! That's the truth because it happens in every horror movie that is set in the woods!

"I was born and raised in these woods... I'll be just fine." Dark Sky Films has released an official trailer for a horror film titled Dead Night, which is the feature directorial debut of a producer on John Dies at the End. The film features two different storylines about a terrifying night in the woods. Here's the quick synopsis for this: a caring mother loses her sanity, setting off a chain of events resulting in tragedy and murder. The story of Casey Pollack unfolds from two very different perspectives when one night in the woods culminates in absolute terror. Dead Night stars Brea Grant, 80's horror icon Barbara Crampton, plus Aj Bowen, Sophie Dalah, Elise Luthman, and Joshua Hoffman. I'm digging the snowy setting for this film, and it looks like it has some very gnarly, freaky twists. Another intriguing horror film to add to your watch queue. Here's the...

Horror flick Dead Night (formerly Applecart) sort of came, created a bit of buzz, and went after its world premiere last September but Brad Baruh's debut film is coming to cinemas and VOD on July 27th. James and his wife Casey load up their two teenage kids and head out to a remote cabin in Oregon for a weekend trip. When James heads into the snowy forest in search of firewood, he encounters an enigmatic woman passed out in the snow. Bringing her back to the cabin for help, the family has no way of knowing that the woman's presence is the catalyst...

Today, Dark Sky Films has debuted the film's official trailer, with the official theatrical poster also hosted here. The story, for Dead Night, begins with a family and a cabin. What could go wrong? Out in the snowy climes of Oregon, they find a woman laying in the woods. They bring her inside. Meanwhile, a figure lurks outside - watching and waiting. Last year’s Fantastic Fest saw the world premiere of Applecart, the psychological thriller from the producers of John Dies at the End. Since then, the film underwent some edits and a bit of retooling, including a brand new name: Dead Night. To celebrate the new moniker, Dark Sky Films has released a trailer and new […]

After premiering at Fantastic Fest, the filmmakers behind Applecart took their film back to the editing bay to retool it for a fresh premiere at last year’s Cinepocalypse in Chicago. Conceived and directed by first-time feature director Brad Baruh, the newly-titled Dead Night is told in a dual storyline exploring two very different perspectives about a family’s murderous encounter in the woods. Living in Chicago, I spend much of my year being jealous of all the people I see online going to the various genre film festivals held around the parts of the country that aren’t here… until now.
For the first time ever, Chicago is getting its very own full-blown genre festival with Cinepocalypse, a week-long event running November 2nd–9th at the Music Box Theatre, the best place to see a movie in the entire city. Formerly the Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival (which I have attended since it began and always completely loved), Cinepocalypse now has a new venue, a larger and more ambitious slate of programming, and dozens of special guests. It’s going to be bigger and better than any festival of its kind the city has ever seen, and I can’t wait to be there as much as possible to see as many cool movies as possible.

Applecart is one of those movies that by all means seems like it would be a success. Conjuring-universe veteran Joseph Bishara composed the score for the film, first-time writer/director Brad Baruh hired his old John Dies at the End buddy Kenton Drew Johnson to be his Dp, the cast consists of several very capable actors, […]...

Applecart is an upcoming indie horror film. From first time director Brad Brauh, this feature is slated for a Fantastic Fest appearance, in Austin. Fantastic Fest begins this September. In Applecart, a mysterious woman turns up at a family retreat and acts out against everyone. The film stars: Barbara Crampton (Beyond the Gates, 2016), A.J. Bowen (You're Next, 2011), Brea Grant, Alison Haislip and many more. There is currently no wide distribution in the works. Though, a trailer was released earlier this year (found below) and a movie poster can be found here. For more on the story, James (Bowen) is suffering from inoperable liver cancer. He takes refuge in a lone cabin, with some friends. During the night, a woman comes out of the woods. She is shaken. But, as time goes by, it becomes clear that this mysterious person has fatalistic intentions. The film will have its World Premiere at Fantastic Fest.

Barbara Crampton has a special place in the hearts of genre fans, particularly those who came of age in the 1980’s video shop era. Making her name in horror classic Re-Animator, she worked steadily throughout that decade and the next in a number of similar cult genre titles.
She has recently enjoyed somewhat of a career renaissance after cropping up in the movies of a new generation of filmmaker who revered her work from those decades before, including the likes of Adam Wingard and Rob Zombie. She also gave a brief yet delicious turn in last year’s Beyond the Gates (a must see for 90’s fantasy-horror aficionados). Her ascent looks set to continue after a recent, meatier role as a deeply unconventional self-help therapist in the dark and enigmatic psychological thriller Sun Choke, which makes it’s streaming debut on Shudder from 9th March.

Little Sister is writer/director Zach Clark's fifth feature film, and arguably it may be his best yet. It stars a talented young cast (Addision Timlin and Keith Poulson) mixed with seasoned actors such as Barbara Crampton and Ally Sheedy. The result is a delight to watch --- and a very different family drama --- one thankfully not sickingly sweet. Barbara Crampton has made quite the resurgence in horror films lately --- Applecart, Death House Beyond the Gates, Sun Choke, Tales of Halloween, We Are Still Here, You're Next, and Road Games --- to name a few. I caught up with her at the 20th annual Fantasia International Film Festival to discuss Little Sister (where it screened last night to a very receptive crowd) as well as what she's been up to lately, and what's next for...
