Nelson Mandela, the iconic anti-apartheid leader who went from 27 years as a political prisoner to eventually becoming the first president of a free South Africa, will be the subject of the 30-hour scripted TV series “Mandela.” The project is currently the works at writer/producer Josh Wakely’s Grace: A Storytelling Company shingle.
Wakely has secured the TV series life rights to the late Mandela via House of Mandela Entertainment, the media arm of the Mandela estate. Wakely will executive produce and write “Mandela,” along with South African writer/director Kagiso Lediga (“Queen Sono”) and producer Kweku Mandela (who is also Nelson Mandela’s grandson).
The project, which Wakely compares to a multi-season saga in the vein of Netflix’s “The Crown,” will center on Mandela’s life as he was sent to prison while aiming to end apartheid, the system of institutional racism and segregation that was administered in South Africa for generations.

In recent years, Netflix has lost plenty of licensed content, but many will be surprised to learn that some of the removals from Netflix have been Netflix Original titles. Here’s the complete list of every removed Netflix Original since 2017.
To get to the bottom of why Netflix Original titles leave, they usually fall into one of several categories.
The majority leave because Netflix does not own them. Instead, they’re distributed internationally exclusively by Netflix for a fixed period of time. Secondly, it could be temporary or permanent licensing problems. For example, Beat Bugs left due to licensing problems for a short period of time, whereas Slasher was removed for some time because the owner of the series went bankrupt. Thirdly, some titles are time-specific. These include New Year’s Countdowns, for example. We won’t list these below. Next,...

Australia’s leading children’s TV producers today called on the Federal Government to review its planned media reforms, warning that abolishing the free-to-air broadcasters’ children content quotas will result in thousands of job losses.
The coalition is seeking an urgent meeting with the government to work on changing policies to sustain children’s production and enable producers to continue to access the Producer Offset.
“Unless these amendments are urgently implemented we fear many thousands of jobs will be lost and highly successful and profitable production companies will be forced to close,” the group said.
“The government’s decision to effectively shut down the production of local children’s content will have a detrimental impact on the Australian community and especially its children.”
By abolishing the quotas for children’s content and with no requirements on the streamers or other adjustments, the government has left the sector stranded, it says.

Pearl Jam Recruits Climate Change Activist Greta Thunberg for Cautionary ‘Retrograde’ Visual (Watch)
Pearl Jam offers a startling vision for an Earth ravaged by climate change in a new animated video for their song “Retrograde,” directed by Emmy-winning Australian filmmaker Josh Wakely (“Beat Bugs”). The clip, the latest from Pearl Jam’s “Gigaton” album, extends that project’s environmentally conscious themes by featuring teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg as a fortune teller revealing the dire consequences of inaction.
Throughout the video, Thunberg observes giant waves overwhelming such world landmarks as London Bridge, the skyscrapers of Manhattan and even the Space Needle of Pearl Jam’s Seattle hometown. But just as “Retrograde” the song strikes a balance between despair (references to “seven seas rising forever” and a “future fading out”) and determination (“It’s going to take much more than ordinary love to lift us up”), the clip aims to “imagine the future and then try to alter it,” according to Wakely.

For four years, Josh Wakely has been prepping a television project that many writers would kill to work on. Now the TV and music-video vet has one of the industry’s foremost producers backing him.
Warren Littlefield has signed on to serve as executive producer for “Time out of Mind,” a gritty drama series that would reimagine characters from the songs of Bob Dylan. Wakely secured Dylan’s life and music rights for the project in early 2016, and has since been working with the music legend, also an executive producer, on mapping out the show. With scripts for the first three episodes finished, along with an outline of the first three seasons, Wakely and Littlefield are ready to take the package to market.

Tamara Asmar.
Screenwriting is often such a lonely pursuit that Tamara Asmar really relishes her time brainstorming in writers’ rooms, likening the experience to being in a confessional.
“These are places where people divulge the most personal, hilarious, moving and heartbreaking things about their lives,” says the prolific writer whose credits include Doctor Doctor, On the Ropes, Love Child and Beat Bugs.
“That feeds into stories, sparks ideas and takes you down different narrative pathways that you otherwise would not have. I have definitely contributed some stories, cleverly masked.”
Currently Asmar is juggling multiple projects in development including Aleph, an eight-part series created by Miranda Nation for Porchlight Films, a fantasy drama for Jungle Entertainment and a movie for Easy Tiger which she now thinks is better suited to TV.

Kate Mulvany as Frankie in ‘Lambs of God’ (Photo: Mark Rogers).
Kate Mulvany has a stellar CV as a playwright, screenwriter and stage, film and TV actor – but several years ago she was afraid that screen roles were drying up.
Happily that changed when she was cast as an Army captain who suspects the death of her husband in Afghanistan was covered up in the Foxtel/Goalpost Pictures’ drama Fighting Season.
Now she is on screen in Foxtel/Lingo Pictures’ miniseries Lambs of God as Frankie, the sister of Father Ignatius (Sam Reid), who is kidnapped by nuns played by Ann Dowd, Jessica Barden and Essie Davis.
Her acting career continues to flourish as she makes her Us TV series debut in Amazon’s The Hunt, which follows a group of Nazi-hunters living in New York City in 1977.

(L-r) Andrew Goldsmith, Lucy Hayes and Bradley Slabe.
Bradley Slabe, the co-director with Andrew Goldsmith of the Academy Award-shortlisted animated short Lost & Found, looks set for a major career boost after securing representation in the Us.
The writer-director signed with Los Angeles-based Verve after being introduced to the talent and literary agency by Jonathan Hludzinski, Animal Logic’s senior VP, production.
On the same trip to La he met with four management companies and is yet to decide which one to take on. “My dream is to create my own content but Verve has showed me the IP properties on their roster and asked me which ones I’d like to pitch for,” he tells If.
Slabe, Goldsmith and producer Lucy Hayes are keen to develop a TV series spin-off of Lost & Found, which would look at the community of knitted creatures before their ranks were thinned to two.

Musical history has never been as accessible as it is in the streaming era. At the same time, it’s remarkably disposable: A recent study by the British Phonographic Industry revealed that music from the Sixties accounted for just 6.4% of all streams in the U.K. in 2017. Streamers prefer the recent past by a stunning margin: Music from the 2000s accounted for 60.4% of listening.

In the past decade broadcast networks mostly retreated to near the bare minimum of children’s programming that the Federal Communications Commission would allow. But in the past few months an influx of orders for kid-friendly content, specifically by streaming services, has made a seemingly cold genre suddenly hot.
In January, Hulu announced a revival of the popular “Animaniacs” for 2020 with a two-season, straight-to-series order. Amazon has been rolling out original children’s content for several years, most recently with the premiere of “The Dangerous Book for Boys,” a family series executive produced by Bryan Cranston. All the services mix original and acquired series. For Netflix that’s included such originals as “Julie’s Greenroom” and “Beat Bugs” mixed with acquisitions including “My Little Pony” and “The Cat in the Hat.”

Stuck for an alternative to the usual viewing for young kids? Then these streaming recommendations may be of use...
The wonderful world wide web (including this very site) has looked in detail at Netflix; the hits, the misses, the hidden gems, the ones to miss and so on. This said, Netflix Originals has another area where it operates. And this is where my three-year-old son comes in.

Thanks to Nick Jnr and Channel 5’s Milkshake, we’re generally okay in our house should children’s television (Aka award-winning parenting) be required. Netflix takes it to another level. There are the well-known shows (Peppa Pig, Paw Patrol etc.), the slightly lesser-known programmes (Pocoyo being my personal favourite) and then there are Netflix’s own productions.

Josh Wakely, the man behind the upcoming cartoon series "Beat Bugs" which incorporates the music of the Beatles, is about to do the same for classic Motown hits.
Netflix has given a series order to an animated kids series that will revolve around an eight-year-old boy named Ben, who lives in the city of Motown and discovers he can bring street art to life.
