In advance of this week’s launch of the new, refurbished six-screen Curzon Bloomsbury (formerly the Renoir), further details have emerged of the UK’s first cinema devoted to documentary.
Set for launch this Friday (March 27), the Bertha DocHouse screen, which will be housed within the Curzon Bloomsbury complex, will show documentaries all year round.
Several films have been selected to help launch the new venue. The first to be shown is Marcus Vetter’s The Forecaster, a profile of the renegade financial wizard Martin Armstrong, who predicts that a sovereign debt crisis will start to unfold on a global level after October 1, 2015.
Receiving their UK premieres on the Bertha DocHouse screen during the venue’s opening week will be Pixadoress, about Sao Paulo’s adrenalin-junkie street artists, and Waiting For August, about Romanian teenagers fending for themselves when their mother moves abroad to find work.
Also screening early on is Agnes Sos’ Stream Of Love, about...

"Force Majeure" from Sweden, "Ida" from Poland, "Leviathan" from Russia and "Winter Sleep" from Turker were nominated in the top category with Lars von Trier's two-part "Nymphomaniac," with "Ida" leading the way overall with five nominations. Steven Knight's "Locke" showed up in the director and screenwriter fields, while that film's star, Tom Hardy, was nominated in the best actor category along with awards hopefuls like Brendan Gleeson ("Calvary") and Timothy Spall (shockingly, "Mr. Turner's" only nomination). Marion Cotillard ("Two Days, One Night"), Charlotte Gainsbourg ("Nymphomaniac") and Agata Kulesza ("Ida") were among the best actress nominees. Also announced were the craft prizes, included hardware for "Ida" (cinematographer), "Under the Skin" (composer) and "The Dark Valley" (costume and...

We watch narrative films because we want to see reflections of ourselves. But we go to documentaries to discover other worlds where, if we're lucky, we might happen upon ourselves in the process. Romanian born director Teodora Mihai's "Waiting for August" is just this sort of documentary. Mihai watches, as if through a window, as a brave 15-year-old girl cares for six siblings in Romania while their mother provides for them abroad in Italy. Shot in widescreen vérité, the film is mounted in such pictorial stillness that we forget the presence of the filmmaker. From day to day in their small social housing apartment these idiosyncratic kids go about their lives knowing that their mother will eventually return from Turin. But in the meantime teenage Georgiana must assume the role of the matriarch. This is exactly what Mihai wanted to achieve with her debut, a feature close to her...

What's perhaps most moving in Waiting for August, a quiet film of weight and joy, is its sense of desperate normalcy. Newcomer Teodora Ana Mihai's accomplished doc follows Romanian 15-year-old Georgiana's efforts to care for six younger siblings the year that their mother, broke, leaves Bacau for work in Italy. Georgiana's asked to become something like a mother just as she's beginning to feel out what it means to be a woman — and while she needs to find time to master her school's upcoming placement test.
Mihai shows us Georgiana and the kids on the regular days. A tangle of boys heaps on the bottom tier of a bunk bed, watching the TV that's always on, usually tuned to imported telenovelas. They play video games, cry and fight a bit, and hop about when mom ...
