Zack Gottsagen has been named the recipient of the Rising Star Award at the 2020 Palm Springs International Film Festival, organizers announced on Wednesday. The star of “The Peanut Butter Falcon” will receive the award at the Psiff Film Awards Gala on Jan. 2.
Gottsagen joins previously announced honorees Dakota Fanning, Gal Gadot, Anna Kendrick, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lawrence and Alicia Vikander.

Borrowing the off-the-grid Southern landscapes of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and adding the energetic, spirited Zack Gottsagen — supported by a very engaging Shia Labeouf and Dakota Johnson — “The Peanut Butter Falcon” is charming, enveloping, and an absolute joy.
Zak (first-timer Gottsagen) is a 22-year-old with Down syndrome; after being abandoned by his relatives, he lives in a nursing home because the state has no other facilities that would supply the care he needs. Looked after by administrator Eleanor (Johnson) and several of the other residents, Zak watches old wrestling videos of his idol, “The Saltwater Redneck” (Thomas Haden Church), and dreams of escaping the home to attend the Redneck’s wrestling school.
One night, with the help of his roommate, who believes Zak should be out experiencing life, Zak escapes wearing only his tighty-whities. Determined, he runs through most of the night, finally finding a moment to rest on a small boat,...

Zack Gottsagen dreamed of being an actor as he grew up in West Palm Beach, Florida.
“I used to watch Shia Labeouf on Even Stevens,” Gottsagen, 34, tells People in this week’s issue. “I would dream of working with him someday.”
While some thought Gottsagen’s acting goal seemed unlikely because he has Down syndrome, Gottsagen never let that stop him. (A genetic condition, Down causes developmental delays and mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.) He enrolled in a performing arts school and took acting lessons, and after years of training and dedication to the craft, Gottsagen achieved what many thought would be impossible.

Scott Sheppard’s latest documentary “An Act of Love” follows Reverend Frank Schaefer, who had his ministerial credentials revoked in December 2013 after officiating his son’s same-sex wedding. Though Schaefer had no intention of getting involved in the Lgbt debate, he was inevitably thrust into the fight for equality when his son Tim came out of the closet. Schaefer eventually officiated Tim’s wedding in a small, private service in Massachusetts, but eventually word got back to his small Pennsylvania town and the United Methodist Church put him on trial. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

Though Morgan Spurlock (“Super Size Me”) keeps himself busy with his CNN documentary series “Morgan Spurlock Inside Man,” he still avidly directs and produces films, such as a documentary about the “Patriot” movement in the United States. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Spurlock has signed on to produce the so-far untitled doc for First Look Media, the financier for the Best Picture-winning film “Spotlight.” The documentary is directed by David Byars, who went inside the 2016 occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon by Ammon Bundy and a group of armed militants.

With submissions ranging from countries like Italy and Nepal to as short as several minutes to feature length films, every aspect of storytelling has been covered within the 2015 Soho International Film Festival . It only seems fitting that the festival wraps up its sixth annual festival with a number of prominent presenters including The Avengers’ Robert Clohessy and Rescue Me’s James McCaffrey. With awards given to the best of the best at the festival, it was a great close to another successful year for the festival.
There was an even greater presence among the jurors of the festival, with people have worked as actors on shows like Dexter to writers and directors having worked on films like On Golden Years. The jurors included Emmy Award nominee journalist and educator Ernabel Demillo, or ABC Network Casting Head Marci Phillips. Best Song Oscar 2016 contender 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. 74 entries in contention for 2016 Best Song Academy Award 'Tis the season for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to announce the semi-finalists – in some instances, the semi-semi-finalists – for the Academy Awards. Today, the Academy released the list of songs eligible for the 2016 Best Song – or rather, Best Original Song – Oscar. There are 74 contenders, with titles ranging from “Happy” and “I'll See You in My Dreams” to “Hypnosis” and “Bhoomiyilenghanumundo.” Curiously, apart from the inevitable animated and/or kiddie flicks (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, Anomalisa, Pan, Shaun the Sheep Movie, Home, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water, etc.) most of this year's contenders are songs from smaller movies and Bollywood/South Asian releases. Exceptions include Sam Taylor-Johnson's Fifty Shades of Grey, Ryan Coogler's Creed, Kenneth Branagh's...

As is always the case around this time of year, the Academy has given us a hint as to what’s eligible for nominations in certain categories. Today, I have the recently released list of eligible contenders in Best Documentary Feature to share with you all. There’s 124 docs in total hoping to score one of the five slots open at the Academy Awards. Historically, Oscar is fairly picky with their subject matter, but they do throw up some curveballs from time to time. This year, they’ll have as unique a choice to make as any, especially considering how there’s no true frontrunner right now. Of the numerous titles in contention, there’s a large group that bears specifically keeping an eye on. Just a small sample includes 1971, Above and Beyond, Amy, The Armor of Light, Batkid Begins, Best of Enemies, Cartel Land, The Diplomat, Every Last Child,...
