Last seen wrecking shop with the rest of the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, Paul Rudd changes gears quite considerably with the Netflix distributed The Fundamentals of Caring, the second feature from We Made This Movie director Rob Burnett. Stepping into the shoes of retired writer Ben Benjamin, whose life is in a downward spiral after a personal tragedy. After qualifying as a care giver, his first charge is Trevor (Craig Roberts), a young man suffering from muscular dystrophy who might be just as broken as himself. Soon becoming friends, the pair embark on a cross country trip to visit the World's Deepest Pit, where they find they can help each other fix themselves. So yeah, The Fundamentals of Caring isn’t anything new when it comes to this type of Indie drama, but to dismiss it on those terms would be a huge mistake. Burnett’s script may...

Editor’s Note: There are so many different paths to becoming a movie director, but a career in late night isn’t one of the more common ones. Rob Burnett spent 30 years working for David Letterman, rising from intern to executive producer, before directing Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez in the upcoming Netflix release “The Fundamentals of Caring.” We asked the writer/director what lessons he took from “The Late Show” and how did it prepare him for being a filmmaker. What we got was the following essay, which is a great insight into the mindset it takes to direct a feature film.

Despite starting off strong with Beasts of No Nation, Netflix’s original feature film line up hasn’t really being on par with their success with t.v. shows. But Fundamentals of Caring, based on the novel by Jonathan Evison, could change all that, and all they had to do was bring in Paul Rudd. The sometime Ant-Man plays Ben, a retired writer turned caregiver whose first client is Trevor (Craig Roberts), a foul mouthed 18 year old with muscular dystrophy. With the pair both suffering from deep emotional pain, they embark on an impromptu road trip which sees their relationship grow into a true friendship. Written, directed and produced by Rob Burnett (We Made This Movie), Fundamentals of Caring is riding a wave of good reviews following its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and it’s easy to see why, with Rudd and Roberts on top form...

Rob Burnett: 'We Made This Movie' and would like you to watch it for free tonight -- Exclusive Video
In the coming-of-age tale We Made This Movie, five high-school seniors envision a Diy blockbuster as their ticket to the big time. All they need to do is get their homemade version of Jackass to actor Bill Pullman, who plays a fictionalized version of himself who grew up in the same depressed town. “We needed kind of the perfect celebrity for this role,” says director Rob Burnett, who is also the executive producer of The Late Show With David Letterman. “As talented an actor as Bill truly is, I’m not sure that he himself could get a movie made.

From being the CEO of Worldwide Pants to Executive Producer of “The Late Show with David Letterman,” to being the producer of the hit TV series, “Ed” and even discovering some of today’s well known comedians and actors (Ray Romano, Craig Ferguson, Justin Long, Ginnifer Goodwin), it’s almost impossible to be in the entertainment industry and not know who Rob Burnett is. His latest project, “We Made This Movie,” comes out September 20 via SnagFilms (Indiewire's parent company). The movie chronicles the attempt by a group of teens to make it big, and out, of their small town—a seemingly futile effort at first—until they realize in that process they capture something worth showing: their very own evolving lives. PandoDaily, a tech-savvy web publication, hosted its fireside chat this month in New York with Burnett, and Indiewire was lucky enough to sit in on the lively conversation. Held in Q&A style Thursday.
