Fatshark’s popular first-person shooter title Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide comes to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 next week, the developer has announced via a new trailer.
Often likened to Valve’s Left 4 Dead series in regards to structure and gameplay, Vermintide takes place in Games Workshop’s Warhammer Fantasy universe, pitting four players (yourself included) against the Skaven horde – a bipedal race of overgrown rodents that would love nothing more than to chew your face off.
Unlike its inspiration, however, Vermintide sells itself on offering replayability by way of a randomized loot system that rewards you at the end of each stage depending on the number of dice you find and roll. A cute nod to the tabletop game on which it’s based.
In his review of the original release on Steam, our own Joshua Kowbel gave it three and a half stars out of five, describing it as “an eerie,...

When the first trailer for David F. Sandberg’s Lights Out surfaced, I feared that we’d have another Annabelle situation on our hands. Translation: James Wan would produce a film where the director simply tries to mimic Wan’s signature style. It’s easy to get lost in current trends that seem to be working, especially for a blockbuster rookie. So, how does Wan’s protégé fare? Well, Sandberg proves early and often that he’s no WANnabe horror stud – he’s here to kick some genre ass.
Lights Out lunges from the darkest, deepest reaches of enjoyable horror masochism (why do we love scaring ourselves to death?), and dismantles a whole host of tired clichés with ease. “First-time filmmakers make silly genre mistakes!” or “Shorts always make for weak feature adaptations!” or “Mainstream horror is a dying artform!” – nope, not here, and definitely not. Sandberg deviously delivers one helluva cracked-out haunted attraction,...

Don’t retire your old games just yet. Xbox Live’s Director of Programming Larry Hryb, better known by his Gamertag “Major Nelson,” has confirmed that five more games will be added to Microsoft’s Xbox One Backward Compatibility list.
Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead, both released by the highly regarded developer Valve, are easily the most notable of the bunch. Fans who missed out the first time around should take the chance to test their mettle against Aperture Science’s rogue AI Glados and the vast hordes of zombies.

In addition to those Xbox 360 favorites, gamers will also be able to play Babel Rising, Brain Challenge and Flashback on their newer consoles. Players who already own physical copies of the game need only insert the disc into the Xbox One to begin installation. Those with digital copies, meanwhile, will be able to download and...

Zombies are gaming’s new Nazis, and have been for quite some time. They’re unsettling, scary, gory and adaptable, and can be fit into just about any post-apocalyptic or outbreak gone bad storyline. Let’s be honest, though: It’s how fun they are to kill that we like so much about them. After all, we’ve done just about everything imaginable to them, including breaking their decaying bones, chopping them into bits, setting them on fire, riddling their corpses with bullets and hitting golf balls at them.
I’ll admit it: I’m a zombie-loving gamer, and a horror movie fan to boot. I love a great tale featuring the walking dead, and thoroughly enjoy facing off against them in many different video games, from Left 4 Dead to Dead Rising to Fallout. Warhmmer: End Times – Vermintide developer Fatshark has announced the imminent arrival of a substantial add-on Dlc for the first-person shooter/survival hybrid to be released this month. The Drachenfels Dlc will be available to buy on Steam from May 26 and includes three new stages for players to explore in their fight against the Skaven horde.
Castle Drachenfels, Summoner’s Peak and The Dungeons are the names of the three new locations, and you can see the description of each below:
Castle Drachenfels – Walk through the ancient rooms of Castle Drachenfels, covered in the blood and bones of the past. Summoner’s Peak – Foil the Skaven’s plan by destroying the Nurgle portals and put a halt to their reinforcements. In celebration of Star Wars Day this week I thought I'd round up a few awesome Star Wars mods from across the galaxy, some weird, and some far too perfect. They're in no particular order, just five that I think look especially cool. They are available to download too, so you can check them out for yourself!
Galactic Warfare - COD4:mw
This mod started out life as a single blaster model and has grown to be a massive mod covering every aspect of COD4:mw. The maps are incredibly detailed, the sound effects are spot on and even the music is perfect.

Star Wars Millenium Falcon Mod - GTA5

Facebook has announced the formation of a “Social Vr team,” which will be exclusively tasked with determining ways in which future users might interact with one another using virtual reality.
This could include “the ability for friends who live in different parts of the world to spend time together and feel like they’re really there with each other,” the social network wrote in a blog post. While no other information about the team has been released, The Verge reports that it is being led by two game developers, Daniel James (Puzzle Pirates) and Mike Booth (Left 4 Dead).

Ubisoft have released a live-action prequel to their upcoming shooter The Division, due out on the 8th of March, on Amazon Prime. The short film, entitled Agent Origins, is also available in four separate YouTube videos (one on each collaborators channel) and fills in some of the background about the events leading up to the start of the game.
It was developed by Ubisoft in association with Corridor Digital, RocketJump, Director of by Left 4 Dead fan film Adrian Picardi and Devin “devinsupertramp” Graham, and although it is called Agent Origins, it’s unclear if it actually contains characters from the main game itself.
The film portrays events in New York where “Black Friday” a devastating pandemic outbreak (not the deal-filled shopping extravaganza), manages to descend civilisation into chaos and thus trigger into action (by use of a fancy glowing watch) ‘The Division’, a group of agents living undercover lives.

With January upon us, only two things seem certain: an abrupt end to the holiday festivities, and the return of Awesome Games Done Quick.
Awesome Games Done Quick ‒ an annual speedrunning marathon ‒ assembles runners from around the globe to break games, entertain viewers, and (most importantly) raise money for charity. Agdq 2016, in particular, supports the nonprofit Prevent Cancer Foundation. All donations and other proceeds received during the event will further cancer research and education.
Viewers benefit from the generosity, too. Thanks to sponsors, Awesome Games Done Quick features games from every console generation (some of which took days to complete when we were kids). Ask yourself if you’re a kid or a squid as the event kicks off with Splatoon, then get ready for seven days of speedrun bedlam. Before the much-loved Final Fantasy IV brings the chaos to a close, you can expect showings from Super Mario 64, Left 4 Dead 2, Metroid Prime,...

Considering how ludicrously successful the cross medium-spanning superhero genre has become (mostly through the rise of Marvel and DC’s filmic output), each and every one of the following developers must be kicking themselves that they didn’t see it coming.
Partly due to the only truly brilliant superhero games being either Spider-Man 2 and its wonderfully fun swinging mechanics, or Rocksteady’s phenomenal Batman: Arkham trilogy, there are only a handful of titles that really nail your favourite heroes’ abilities. In fact, superheroes created by and for the industry tend to be way better experiences overall, with guys like Infamous’ Cole McGrath, Prototype’s Alex Mercer or even God of War’s Kratos all having awesome origin stories, dogged drives to succeed and morally grey compasses forever twitching to and fro.

There was a time where I admired Tripwire Interactive. Red Orchestra remains one of the most interesting multiplayer shooters I’ve ever played, and Killing Floor is an excellent alternative to Left 4 Dead in terms of pure, unabashed zombie slaying. It was because of this that I took a risk and purchased Killing Floor 2 for early access. I knew the risks, but surely a well reviewed publisher like Tripwire could do what so many indie developers, or over-hyped Kickstarters fail to do right? Maybe this was going to be one of the few Early Access success stories we always hope for?
As it turns out, no, not quite. Not only did Tripwire completely drop the ball with KF2, but with it’s most recent update they may have just signed it’s death sentence.

Left 4 Dead sired a generation of co-op copycats. Turtle Rock Studios, under the supervision of Valve, thrust four players into an undead orgy, and fans happily gave their consent. From four divergent difficulties to the AI director, few playthroughs ever came out the same. Developers leapt at the opportunity to replicate the magic, though the impersonators like Revelations 2012 and Alone in the Dark: Illumination fizzled fast. Even Payday 2 felt the backlash from recent business practices. Left 4 Dead lords over its co-op colleagues, but Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide presides as a close second.
Case in point: the loot system separating Vermintide from Left 4 Dead cuts both ways. As you overcome the game’s thirteen levels, Vermintide donates random weapons to your inventory. A pair of rare daggers fortified my rogue Waywatcher for the dangers ahead, though I could have been stuck with common swords or an exotic bow instead.

While co-operative campaigns are pretty commonplace these days, it’s rare that a title is developed around the mechanic of two players working in tandem. For every game that requires players to fully concentrate and work together as one cohesive unit, like the PS2 cult classic The Adventures of Cookie & Cream, there are a dozen other games that just slapped on the ability for two people to damage bad guys instead of one.
Looking to put cooperative titles back into the gaming spotlight is Asteroid Base’s Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, an ambitious indie gem that relies completely on teamwork and the ability to adapt to situations on the fly. From its terrific art style to its innovative gameplay, there is a lot to enjoy in this date gone awry.

Think of a teeming metropolis like New York City. Now double that in size. If every single person who lived there, every hot-dog vendor, third-grader and euphoric Mets fan, was in fact a flesh-eating zombie, that would roughly equal the 17.3 million people that tuned into last October's fifth-season premiere of AMC's The Walking Dead, the most-watched episode of anything in cable history. Those are blockbuster numbers and they occurred week after week. The demand for the show has become so huge that a prequel spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead, debuts this Sunday.

Catharsis (n) ku-thaa-sis
From the Greek meaning “purging” or “cleansing” – refers to the restoration or renewal of emotions by relieving tensions often through art, such as music.
You know, when I’m feeling a little tense and need to unwind, I like to bust open something like Left 4 Dead or Brutal Doom for some violent release. I can take several anguishes out on zombie hordes or pixilated hell beasts without the finger wagging from authoritative figures or animal rights groups.
Those who say violent video games turn people into violent criminals have obviously never experienced the feeling of tension washing away from your very core with every exploded head or mowed down imp. It’s like an orgy for my Wasd keys, only without the smoking afterwards.
Okay, maybe a little smoke.

Zombies seem to be an easy monster to fit into games these days, they even have a standard story that can be fit over any set template. Trapped Dead: Lockdown is an action RPG that if anything tries to be Diablo style adventure set in an apocalyptic world infested with the undead and psychotic gun wielding survivors. Where this could work well in theory, it tends to get repetitive fast.

Released in 1986, Bubble Bobble was one of the best two-player arcade games ever. Let's make a journey to the cave of monsters...
What’s the greatest co-op videogame of all time? Portal 2? Gauntlet? Left 4 Dead 2, maybe? For me, Bubble Bobble has to rank somewhere near the top of the list. A single-screen platform game where dragons blow bubbles and hooded enemies respond by rolling giant cookies along the floor, Bubble Bobble is still one of the best two-player arcade games ever.
Bubble Bobble’s enemy-nobbling mechanic appears to have its roots in Universal's seminal 1980 coin-op, Space Panic, where aliens are killed by first digging a hole, waiting for the enemies to fall in, and then bashing them while they’re trapped. Bubble Bobble gives this idea a bouncy new twist; this time, you blow bubbles, which encase enemies on contact, and then rush up and jump on them -...

Evolve stole the show for a lot of people at last year’s E3 conference. The asymmetrical shooter easily had some of the longest lines, as gamers were clamoring to taste something truly unique. And, for the most part, people walked away absolutely enthralled with what the game seemingly had to offer. Fast forward nine months later, and what’s arguably the first major release of 2015 is finally out in the open. Unfortunately, though, it simply cannot live up to its own hype.
I was taught when there’s an elephant in the room that you should introduce it. With Evolve, there is a pretty damn big elephant in the room. The Dlc plan here is absolutely atrocious, and every single person involved at Turtle Rock Studios should be ashamed of it. On the very first day, there was $85.88 worth of Dlc in the store, including the Hunting Season Pass.

An elephant gun won't quite cut it with the beasties you'll be stalking in Evolve. But is it a case of Dlc taking priority here?
A lot has already been said about Evolve and its lean towards Dlc, and as both a gamer, and a critic, I've been just as hesitant as everyone else when it comes to the finished product. Dlc has gotten out of hand, plain and simple, with Evolve becoming a clear example of this, and no form of excuse and spin will convince me that publishers are after anything else but money. “We want to give gamers more choice.” Hmmm.
That said, we have to look at Evolve on its own merits, and see if there's a great game hiding underneath that Dlc grindstone. Let's get a crane, lift up the weight, and delve into the soft underbelly of this hunting shooter.

Ahead of Evolve's launch, Turtle Rock has released new footage of what the shooter's single-player mode looks like...
Given that Evolve's from Turtle Rock, the team behind Left 4 Dead, much of the game's marketing has understandably pushed its multiplayer angle.
At its core, Evolve's a four-versus-one shooter, where one player plays a gigantic, angry alien intent on eating four heavily-armed human warriors. It's a concept that, if handled right, could add some spicy variety to the standard online shooter model, since playing as a massive alien is going to feel wildly different from a small, fleshy human holding a gun.
As Evolve's launch approaches, Turtle Rock has taken the opportunity to show off its game's single-player campaign, too. It shows what Evolve looks like when you take control of one of those giant monsters - in this case, the gliding, tentacle-clad Wraith. Wind the footage to the halfway mark,...

Anonymous Blizzard worker says StarCraft II's second expansion will launch this year, and that a spin-off shooter's in the works...
It's already nearly five years since Blizzard released StarCraft II: Wings Of Liberty, a sequel which, as predicted, was a massive hit and sold millions of copies.
Expansion pack Heart Of The Swarm extended the game's universe in 2013, and since then, Blizzard has been teasing the launch of Legacy Of The Void - a second, stand-alone expansion which will focus on the Protoss species and provide an additional 20 missions.
For the best part of a year, Blizzard has remained quiet about when it'll release Legacy Of The Void. But an anonymous employee has since told Yahoo Finance's Tae Kim that "the next StarCraft II game is done and ready to go". And while there isn't a firm date set at the time of writing, "it's likely to come in the second quarter.

I’ve gotten a chance to play Evolve several times now, including the two testing phases it went through. The first reveal was rather awesome, but I wanted to see more. That is when I got into the first testing phase, and let’s just say it didn’t work. Then I was invited to participate in the second phase and my goodness am I glad I got invited to this one! I think I had the game booted up the entire time it was playable, and I was sad when it said “sorry, it’s over.”
Based on the first phase I was honestly going to pass the game up. It was a mess, and what little I did get to play wasn’t working too well. With the second, well everything was fixed, and while we still had some restrictions to it, the game was a ton of fun!

With the news that Evolve has gone gold now official, Turtle Rock Studios has unveiled some additional news about the shooter’s upcoming beta test on the Xbox One, which is set to begin next Thursday, January 15th.
Thanks to consistent news posts on the official Evolve website, we already knew that the open beta would grant players access to two monsters (Goliath and Kraken), the first eight hunters and a handful of maps. Now, as a bonus to those who pre-purchase the shooter, gamers will have access to even more content.
In order to take advantage of this offer, you will need to pre-purchase Evolve either before the beta begins or during it. Upon doing so, you will be granted access the final four hunters (Parnell, Abe, Caira, and Cabot) and one additional monster (Wraith). Besides being allowed access to the characters during the beta, they will also be...

Upcoming co-op hunt 'em up, Evolve, has gone gold, and here's a new trailer to celebrate, along with some facial hair...
Evolve is one of the most anticipated titles of the year, and has been a long time coming. Taking the Left 4 Dead mould, but throwing in a dangerous, evolving monster instead of the undead, it's set to be a new twist on the co-op Fps, and one that we're very keen to get our hands on. This won't be too long now, as Turtle Rock and 2K have announced the game has gone gold, so will hit the February 10 release date with no problems.
You can see the new cinematic trailer below, which gives us a good idea what to expect when we're out hunting dangerous beasties, and the kinds of impressive tech we'll get to use.
As well as announcing the game's completion, Turtle Rock also made good on its charity promise.

Although its scheduled release date is still over a month away, Turtle Rock Studios’ Evolve has officially gone gold. As such, the game is finished and ready for release, which means that the developer must be pretty happy with how things have turned out. Let’s just hope that gamers will share that same sentiment.
To celebrate this announcement, those who’ve been itching to get their hands on the competitive multiplayer shooter have been gifted with a three minute-long introductory cutscene. Needless to say, it’s chock full of badass man-versus-alien action, complete with bullets, special abilities and some tooth-chipping gore.
While some of us at We Got This Covered are quite excited about Evolve and its potential, I’d be lying if I said that I felt the same way. Then again, I’ve always been more of a campaign-focused gamer than a multiplayer addict, although I never...

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 18 years or so you’ll have been witness to the cultural phenomenon that the Resident Evil series has been. From it’s humble beginnings and scares of the Arklay Mansion through the nigh on perfect jaunts into Raccoon City in the days of the original Playstation and genre defining RE4 across the Nintendo consoles, the series kept going from strength to strength. Capcom had the ultimate cash cow, a game beloved by many, which sold by the truckload and rarely dipped in quality.
Then Shinji Mikami, the twisted mind behind the series who had steered every game to his very specific vision left Capcom after they went against his wishes and made RE4 available for other platforms than the Nintendo Gamecube. Brace yourself, wallet. With All Hallows’ Eve in full swing across the globe, Valve has got into the holiday spirit by launching the annual Halloween sale on Steam that slashes the asking price of over one hundred games up until November 3rd.
Fans of the horror genre need look no further for some pixelated entertainment this evening, as the promotion reduces prices by up to 80% on scarefests such as The Amnesia Collection and State of Decay, and even the more action-oriented titles such as Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead 2.
PC owners can also pick up the season pass for the recently-released The Evil Within, which received its first post-launch patch earlier this week that allowed players to adjust the game’s aspect ratio and framerate.
As with most Steam sales, there are simple too many titles to list. So, for a comprehensive breakdown of Valve’s latest promotion, you can...

Mere weeks after an expansion for the fourth instalment in the franchise — titled Saints Row: Gat Out Of Hell – was revealed, creative director Steve Jaros has opted to leave Volition and explore new business ventures over at Valve. Jaros obviously played a crucial role in shaping the style and tone of the Saints Row series into the irreverent and idiosyncratic ball of chaotic fun that we know it as today, so it’ll be interesting which direction the franchise takes going forward.
It is also worth noting that Jaros had worked for Volition for ten years before making the decision to leave. He also left the following message on Twitter, which you can read below:

If a step-by-step guide were written for how to create a standard zombie narrative, it would be titled "Z Nation." Start with one part outbreak footage, and mix in some overlapping audio clips of news regarding said outbreak.
Simmer it in a stock of basic characters with one part brown-haired stubbly leader, one part love interest, two parts mysterious drifters with unexplained combat prowess, and three parts uninteresting zombie chow to beef up the cast.
Marinade in a standard post-apocalyptic world, equal parts towns trying to make it and traveling caravans with dubious intent. Bake for 45 minutes in standard character dilemmas, adding in a mission to cure the virus for some longevity. Garnish with dialogue.
I try not to be too critical of things for being standard. I can’t expect everyone watching something to have the same breadth of exposure as I do, and in my experience there’s...

Hello again, dear readers. It’s the beginning of September, and another summer movie season has ended. Personally, I plan on checking out the new horror film As Above, So Below, which just came out on Friday. And in the meantime, this week’s installment of Trailer Trashin’ looks at another upcoming horror film, the October release Annabelle.
Premise: John Form (Ward Horton) has found the perfect gift for his expectant wife Mia (Annabelle Wallis) – a beautiful, vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress, which she names Annabelle. But Mia’s delight with the doll doesn’t last long. On one horrific night, their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult, who violently attack the couple. Spilled blood and terror are not all they leave behind. The cultists have conjured an entity so malevolent that nothing they did will compare to the sinister conduit to the damned that is now…...

Following a successful PC beta test for their upcoming shooter Evolve, Turtle Rock Studios announced that the title will enter live beta exclusively on the Xbox One starting in January. The news was revealed during Microsoft’s Gamescom 2014 conference earlier today.
Pitting four human characters against one ever-growing monster, Evolve is the first non-mobile title from Turtle Rock Studios since the release of Left 4 Dead 2 Dlc back in 2010. With the full might of publisher 2K Games behind it, the title received rapturous praise this past E3, and is one of the more highly-anticipated titles set for release in the coming months.
To coincide with the announcement of the beta, Microsoft also debuted new footage from Evolve that showcased a brand new level. Titled “Distillery,” the new map features “dynamic snowstorms, large altitude changes and secret waterfall routes,” and will be playable during the title’s beta. Microsoft also announced...

Deep Silver revealed some gory Dead island 2 gameplay as Gamescom, and you can see it here...
Looking more like a first person Dead Rising, the second proper outing of Deep Silver's Dead Island isn't going to be afraid of going over the top on the blood-spilling front. The new trailer for the game demonstrates the myriad ways player will be able to take out the undead in the lush climes of California.
Hammers, machetes, maces, guns, hedge trimmers and more can be used to turn zombies into so much finely tenderised giblet meat, and it's all presented in full current gen loveliness, the kind that delights in covering your screen with finely-rendered blood, gore and bone. Tasty.
The original Dead Island was a surprise, being very enjoyable, and a unique mixture of Left 4 Dead and Borderlands, but it had plenty of faults. Let's hope Dead Island 2 addresses these, and...

From Turtle Rock Studios (creators of the Left 4 Dead series) and 2K Games comes Evolve, their badass new take on team-based shooter games. In Evolve, two teams face off against each other in various multi-leveled alien landscapes and what sets Evolve apart from other games is that, rather than having the team be the traditional four vs. four, the two teams consist of 4 class-based hunters versus one player taking on the role of a big nasty monster.
While playing Evolve, there are four classes made available to you as a monster hunter: assault, medic, support and trapper. We were also introduced to two different monsters during the game play- the Goliath and the Kraken- so it remains to be seen what other monsters will be revealed closer to Evolve’s release date.

There were no new consoles at E3 this year, no expensive new peripherals. Nothing, at long last, to distract from the videogames. And what games! The 2014 videogame megaconvention found the three major companies adjusting to a new kind of normal: a kinder-gentler Microsoft, a swaggery Sony, a Nintendo that suddenly realized it was time to throw a Hail Mary on the Wii U. Across the board, there was a sense of experimentation. Major developers iterated old franchises in new directions. Smaller developers made bold splashes with highly independent visions.

Good night. Good luck.
What would happen if you combined Mirror's Edge and Left 4 Dead? You'd get something a lot like Dying Light.
Your objective is to activate a radio tower to alert other survivors. Everything you see, if accessible, can be climbed on. This automatically gives the game a very Metroidvania feel, as there are a ton of different paths to a single objective.
As you run to the radio tower, multiple side objectives appear. One is a random encounter in which you can save a fellow survivor, another is an airdrop full of supplies. If you don't get to the airdrop fast enough though other survivors will steal it.
Melee weapons are the main form of combat and you're armed with a rusty pipe and a baseball bat. Your weapons can break though after a great deal of use so it smart to reinforce it every now and then.

Six years ago, Turtle Rock Studios brought us Left 4 Dead, the cooperative zombie shooter that became one of my personal favorite games, and the reason my grades might have suffered some in college. Now they.ve brought us to the next stage in cooperative shooters with Evolve, in which you not only play as the hunting party but one lucky player takes on the role of the monster as well.

Taking to the stage during Microsoft’s E3 press event this morning, 2K Games revealed a series of exclusive content for the Xbox One version of Evolve, all the while introducing the game’s second confirmed monster, the kraken.
This all-new abomination is a significant departure from the goliath both aesthetically and in terms of gameplay. Rather than a hulking behemoth, the recently revealed kraken appears to much more agile than its monstrous brethren, slithering around the game’s luscious, Avatar-esque forests with aplomb.
Should players choose to take control of the kraken, Turtle Rock hinted at some of the lighting-fuelled abilities that the beast possesses, including a feature that will allow the putrid monstrosity to levitate for a brief period of time.

The corporate realities of the videogame industry operate on massive, mega, epochal levels. Release dates are planned out years in advance. New brands are built carefully over the course of years, with the implicit promise that they could run for decades. You could think of the major videogame companies as giants, skyscraper-size creatures who move at their own pace. Or you could think of them as creatures out of an Hp Lovecraft story, unthinkable many-headed monstrosities who live in cross-dimensional space dreaming up new nightmares. Either way, it’s hard to imagine that the events of a single day can change everything.

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s announcement of Homefront: The Revolution, Crysis developer Crytek has revealed its second all-new game in as many days, Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age.
Rooted in a medieval setting, the third-person title will take players to the late 1800s where horrific monsters run amok, all vying to be, well, hunted. From the above teaser trailer, though, it appears as though players will have ample enemies to go toe-to-toe with, including foreboding witches, demons and everyone’s favourite nemesis, zombies.
