Tamil film superstar Suriya is back for the first time since the disastrous Singam 2 with a new film directed by N. Lingusamy titled Anjaan. Normally, this information on its own would be enough to get my excited. Suriya is a major talent in search of the right role, which he has managed to avoid landing over the last five years. There's no guarantee that Anjaan (which translates to Fearless in English) will be the performance that gives him the credit he is due, but there are a couple of helpful circumstances that stand to give him a better chance than usual.Anjaan's director, Lingusamy, has at least two decent pictures under his belt, 2010's Paiyaa, and 2011's Vettai. Now, Suriya has worked with high profile...

With a plethora of south remakes in Bollywood, the new entrant in this category is the Vettai remake. And now, Karan Johar who was quite impressed with this Arya, R Madhavan and Sameera Reddy starrer plans to go ahead with a Bollywood remake. Also, KJo has joined hands with Utv who have already been planning for this remake since a few months. While the Dharma Productions head honcho surely confirms his partnership for the film, the cast is yet to be finalized. This remake has already been a victim of casting rumours in the past, where names like Abhishek, John and Shahid were attached to the film.

New Delhi, July 30: Karan Johar is set to remake the Tamil action-drama "Vettai" in Hindi, a first for the filmmaker. He promises a lot of heroism, humour and great scope for music in the movie.
In 2012, Karan remade Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Hindi film "Agneepath", but he is attempting a Hindi remake of a southern film for the first time with director N. Linguswamy's film.
"I was very impressed with 'Vettai' when I watched it, but I didn't know Utv was involved in it. I've now partnered with them for the Hindi remake. We will soon announce the name of a young actor, who will fill the slot of a true-blue action star," Karan said.

There continues to be uncertainty around John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan pairing up for the Hindi remake of Vettai. Though there were recent reports indicating that the Dostana pair had been signed for the film which would be directed by Abbas-Mustan, the fact remains that talks haven't even reached the signing stage yet.
"In fact leave aside signing, it is just an intent of interest which has been shown", informs a source, "It is being wrongly portrayed that the team is all set to get going. There is nothing confirmed yet. Yes, Abbas-Mustan would be doing the film but for John and Abhishek to come together for the film, there are still formalities pending."
While it is a given that the duo would be first coming together for Karan Johar and Tarun Mansukhani's Dostana 2, an announcement around which is still awaited, it would be a while before remake Vettai comes under the radar.

Remakes are a weekly announcement that we hear and while the film in question isn’t new, the change is. The Tamil film, Vettai that starred south actor Arya and our own R. Madhavan, was to be remade with Shahid Kapoor and Ali Zafar stepping into Arya and Madhavan’s roles and become director Linguswamy debut in Hindi. But the latest reports say the director baton has been passed onto director duo Abbas- Mastan by Utv Motion Pictures and the duo have zeroed in on Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham to play the leads.
“We will direct the film (Vettai). To suit the sensibilities of mass audience here, we have made certain changes” the duo has said to Times of India as they also confirmed the two actors have given the nod to the project with filming slated to begin early next year.

It's only been a couple of years since Ronnie Screwvala took his multimedia conglomerate, Utv Motion Pictures, into the south of India. Utv is the biggest studio in India, and in 2011, the controlling stake in the company's stock was purchased by The Walt Disney Corporation. This transition has really seemed to up the speed at which Utv seeks to take over all of Indian cinema, not just the Hindi film industry, on which they've had a very firm grip for the better part of a decade. In the service of that goal, they've released several big budget features with big South Indian stars including Arya (Naan Kadavul) in Vettai, Kamal Hassan in Unnaipol Oruvan, and Vikram in last year's breakout hit, Deiva Thirumagal. It's final. Ali Zafar will play Shahid Kapoor's Bade Bhai in the much talked-about Hindi remake of last year's Tamil blockbuster Vettai Madhavan who played the Bade Bhai's part in the original is out of the Hindi remake of Vettai. Speaking ruefully from Chennai director N. Linguswamy who helms both the Tamil and Hindi remake of Vettai says, "Madhavan is out of the country for three months (getting his knees treated). We can't wait. Shahid Kapoor has been finalized to play the younger brother. We're going ahead with Ali Zafar for the other hero's role." Interestingly there was a 10-year age-gap between screen brothers Madhavan and Arya in Vettai. Ali Zafar who will play Shahid's elder brother in the remake is hardly a year older than Shahid. When we made inquiries about how this skimpy age-difference would be covered in the remake a source close to the project informed,...

Now it can be told! Like some of his senior colleagues, Shahid Kapoor has consented to do a remake of a South Indian film. Utv's Tamil film Vettai, starring Arya and R. Reportedly, a screening of the film was held for Shahid a few days ago and the actor agreed to be a part of the remake instantly. So much so that he has even allotted dates to the producers of the film [filming begins from mid-April onwards]. "In fact, Shahid has decided to push other assignments ahead to accommodate the remake," a trustworthy source informs me. Meanwhile, Utv is in the process of finalizing the second lead [R. War Horse (12A)

You can see why the hit boy-and-his-horse book/play appealed to Spielberg, in a sort of Et-meets-Saving Private Ryan way. It brings out the best and worst of him. There's some brazen old-school tear-jerking and rosy rural farming hardship, but there's also the first world war, thank God. Epic action frequently comes to the rescue, in what becomes a stirring, gruelling steeplechase across wartime Europe, towards an ending that's pure Hollywood.
Shame (18)
(Steve McQueen, 2011, UK) Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale. 101 mins
McQueen's follow-up to Hunger tackles an equally risky topic (sex addiction) with a similarly sparse and frank approach, though this is arguably more conventional. Fassbender is magnetic as usual, playing a terminally horny Manhattan man whose lone-wolf existence is disrupted by the arrival of his needy sister.
