Elvis Presley didn’t sing too many protest songs, but one of his ballads was written by one of the most important protest singers of the 1960s: Buffy Saint-Marie. Elvis wasn’t the only artist to record the song. The tune changed its writer’s life.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Until It’s Time for You to Go’ was written by Buffy Saint-Marie
Buffy Saint-Marie is a singer and songwriter who was part of a huge wave of 1960s folk musicians who wrote about social issues. Some of her most famous folk tunes include “Now That the Buffalo’s Gone,” “Universal Soldier,” and “Codine.” She also penned some popular love songs, including “Up Where We Belong” from An Officer and a Gentleman and “Until It’s Time for You to Go.”
During a 2022 interview with Original Cin, Saint-Marie revealed her opinion of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. “I mean, I was a huge Elvis fan,...

The horror genre thrives upon cautionary tales where arrogant individuals believe that they can outsmart some supernatural force for their own gain. It’s for this reason that the greed-quenching Djinn and parables where people learn to be careful what they wish for, usually in the most morbid ways possible, are popular horror tropes. Djinn are a fascinating concept, but they’ve struggled to truly make their mark in cinema between largely-forgettable films like Jinn, The Djinn, Wish Upon, and even George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. But Djinn stories can still be fun and effective in the right context. And Robert Kurtzman’s Wishmaster is still the premier djinn horror film over 25 years later.
Wishmaster is a movie that understands the unabashed joys of a big, dumb plot where there’s a giant magical gemstone that’s the key to the Djinn’s powers because why the hell not?...

Eight months after it won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project” has been officially picked up by HBO Documentary Films, which is buying U.S. and Canada television and streaming rights. Henson and Codie Elaine Oliver, the film will also screen in the Spotlight section of the upcoming 61st New York Film Festival.
To qualify for the Oscars, the film will play in theaters this fall ahead of its 2024 debut on HBO and Max. Sundance always supplies a number of Oscar nominees in the documentary race and “Going to Mars” is a strong contender.

Jordanian director Bassel Ghandour’s thriller “The Alleys,” which depicts lowlife intrigue in Amman’s murky underworld, is drawing fire from conservative members of Jordan’s parliament for its use of expletives and allegedly blasphemous themes.
Ghandour’s multi-strand genre film — shot in a claustrophobic neighborhood in East Amman called Jabal Al Natheef, where violence runs rampant — is being blasted in parliament. It has also sparked heated social media debate ever since an uncensored version of the film released on Netflix on Jan. 5.
Conservative MP Suleiman Abu Yahya on Monday demanded that one of the actors, Munther Rayahna, be stripped of his citizenship for defending the film on social media. Another conservative politician, Muhammad Abu Suailik, in parliament called for Jordan’s Royal Film Commission, which helped fund “The Alleys,” to be prosecuted “for supporting films that distort the public image of Jordanian society.”

Editor’s note: Former IndieWire staffer and Shadow and Act founder Tambay Obenson is launching Akoroko, a new platform devoted to African film and television; we’re happy to give him our platform to make his case.
For a century, “cinema” has been most often used in reference to an industry that almost entirely excludes the African experience. I want to change that with Akoroko, a new platform that will bridge African film and television industries with the West with consistent, robust, and candid coverage that’s local yet globally accessible. It will include criticism, analysis, consultation, cataloging, curated film streaming, and education.
An October 2021 Unesco report noted that the African film industry generates 5 billion in annual revenue, with the potential for 20 billion. Global appetite for African film and television programming is unknown because the industry continues to be “structurally underfunded, underdeveloped, and undervalued.”

The monster of the week is not a demon or a creature or one of the deadly sins. The team is called in to assess a very different kind of evil than they’re usually assigned. A white cop shot an African American woman at a traffic stop because he thought she was pulling out a gun. Evil Season 2 Episode 4
Evil season 2, episode 4, “E Is for Elevator,” stops between floors to squeeze in an urban legend. The team is called in on a job outside their scope, an internet game. It has no demonic ties except for a pentagram drawn on the floor of a player. With that as the only spiritual tie, David Acosta (Mike Colter) goes off to contemplate the mysteries of his superiors’ faith in Leland Townshend (Michael Emerson), while Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) and Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) go pushing buttons.
The family who calls in the team admits there is no satanic connection, but the police have already written them off, and tagged their son a runaway. The whole thing would have been passed on if it weren’t for the game. This gives the episode a pass for an all-ages admission, and lets the children play.

The Simpsons Season 32 Episode 21
Abe comes in from the cold on The Simpsons Season 32, episode 21, because it’s cold. “The Man from G.R.A.M.P.A.” is a tepid espionage chiller about an increasingly insignificant spy, but a room with a working window at the Springfield Retirement Home lies in the balance.
The episode opens with the uneasy soundtrack of intrigue as the titles tell us we are in London in 1970 at the office of the MI5. The British spies are toasting their youngest and brightest star, Terrance, voiced by Stephen Fry, who also voices the Head of the MI5, and will go on to voice his own father and daughter. He is that kind of spy, an Englishman unafraid to dress in drag. His then-most recent operation in Prague only left 11 dead, which for British Intelligence is barely a parking ticket.

12 more join Alicia von Rittberg-led cast, including Tom Cullen as Thomas Seymour
Starz is rounding out the court for its “Becoming Elizabeth” series, about the early years of Queen Elizabeth I, starring Alicia von Rittberg in the title role, revealing Tuesday that 14 actors have joined the drama.
Among the new additions are Romola Garai as Princess Mary, Jessica Raine as Queen Catherine Parr and Tom Cullen as Thomas Seymour.
Per Starz, “Becoming Elizabeth” is the fascinating, untold story of the early life of England’s most iconic Queen. Long before she ascended the throne, young Elizabeth Tudor was an orphaned teenager who became embroiled in the political and sexual politics of the English court. The death of King Henry VIII sets into motion a dangerous scramble for power. His surviving children find themselves pawns in a game between the great families of England and the powers of Europe who...

Hubert Cornfield’s smoothly directed, moody kidnapping story is mysterious, engaging and well acted, but opts for an anti-thriller vibe with a curiously unsatisfying ending. Was this really the plan, or did the irksomely capricious Marlon Brando just not want to cooperate with the director? Brando is terrific anyway. The well-cast Rita Moreno, Richard Boone and Pamela Franklin are short-changed by directorial and editorial decisions that don’t give us enough of a purchase on the characters. The overcast weather on the French coast is a plus, but not the director’s choice of a downbeat, arty finish.

Clara Rugaard, the Danish actress who starred in Netflix’s I Am Mother, is to lead the cast for Sky’s The Rising, a supernatural crime thriller that was originally inspired by Belgian drama Hotel Beau Séjour.
Deadline first revealed in October 2019 that Sky was making its own version of Hotel Beau Séjour, and the drama is now poised to shoot in the Lake District, England, next month. The eight-part series represents the first Sky drama produced entirely in-house by Sky Studios.
Rugaard stars as Neve Kelly, a woman who discovers she is dead. She’s scared and confused by this new existence. But, when she realizes she has been murdered, she’s furious. She’s determined to find her killer and get justice, believing that it was someone she knew. Martin Gore was recently tweaking his voice electronically — “resynthesizing it,” to use his words — for an avant-garde piece when he realized that it now sounded animalistic. The original vocal was “an almost yelling blues kind of line,” he says, but it had started to seem “human-like.”

The original Spanish-language title of Identifying Features is Sin Señas Particulares, or “No Particular Signs”—a reference to the individuating marks found, or not, on unclaimed corpses found near the U.S.-Mexico border. It’s an echo of Sin Nombre (“Nameless”), Cary Joji Fukunaga’s vivid immigration-thriller debut from 2009, and an apt title for a film that takes a fresh look at lives erased and distorted by migration and violence. Though Trump-era border policy is an implicit backdrop to the cartel activity and mass abductions she depicts, debuting director Fernanda Valadez’s zoomed-in perspective is on family trauma, not imperial culpability.
The Sundance audience and screenwriting award-winner Identifying Features begins in Guanajuato, in central Mexico, with the lyrical sight of a boy, Jesus, walking through a field to tell mother Magdalena (Mercedes Hernández) of his intention to cross the border. As announced last month, the Toronto International Film Festival will look quite different this year in the era of Covid-19. Featuring a drastically reduced lineup, physical screenings for only the first half of the festivals, and more changes, the festival has now unveiled their complete feature film lineup.
Along with previously announced films like the opener, Spike Lee’s filmed version of David Byrne’s American Utopia, Francis Lee’s Ammonite, and Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland, the festival also includes directorial debuts by Halle Berry and Regina King as well as new work by Werner Herzog, Mira Nair, Reinaldo Marcus Green, Frederick Wiseman, and more.

The last console generation produced some of the strongest open-world experiences in the history of the medium. While the likes of Grand Theft Auto V and Skyrim soaked up praise, one of the lesser-known (but equally important) ones came from developer Volition. Saints Row: The Third took the formula established by its predecessors and cranked it up to 11. It catapulted the franchise to stardom, and it’s kind of crazy there hasn’t been a new entry since the lackluster Saints Row IV. With the next entry still some ways out, the time has come to return to Steelport with the arrival of Saints Row: The Third Remastered.
As the title indicates, this is by no means a remake of the 2011 classic. It’s a full-on remaster that buffs up the look of the 3rd Street Saints battle against the Syndicate. The package comes complete with the entire original game plus all of its Dlc.

Not to be associated with the baseball term after which the nuisance law is named, The Third Strike comes from first-time filmmaker Nicole Jones and offers an inside look at the devastation wreaked by the "three-strike" laws.
For those unfamiliar with the term, the three-strike laws add another layer of punishment to felons who have been convicted of felonies three times.
There is a federal law, housed under the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, and state laws can be found in about half of the states, and most came into existence between 1994 and 1995.
The federal law addresses triple federal convictions for serious violent felonies or drug-related trafficking offenses.
States vary by whether the law applies to felonies, misdemeanors, or both; the specific crimes that fall under the law, and the severity of the punishment.

A number of deserving movies and performances are about to have one last moment in the sun, before the Academy Awards suck up the last bit of awards season oxygen. When Qasim Basir made his 2010 debut feature, “Mooz-lum,” the story of an American Muslim going to college in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Facebook changed the trajectory of his filmmaking career.
“It was a very difficult movie to get out,” said Basir. “It wasn’t about terrorism, [but] it still received a great amount of opposition and hate.” He turned to Facebook, writing individually to his followers and asking for help in building awareness. Sharing behind-the-scenes footage and telling his personal story, Basir quickly built a community around his “Mooz-lum” Facebook page.
“We went straight to the people and built a community of 100,000 from around the world, who were literally writing, ‘We want to see this movie in our city,'” said Basir. Running contests on the now-defunct Demandit, where followers’ interest dictated where the film screened, Basir worked with AMC Independent to create his own theatrical release in dozens of cities around the world.

Sound on Sight undertook a massive project, compiling ranked lists of the most influential, unforgettable, and exciting action scenes in all of cinema. There were hundreds of nominees spread across ten different categories and a multi-week voting process from 11 of our writers. The results: 100 essential set pieces, sequences, and scenes from blockbusters to cult classics to arthouse obscurities.

Darth Maul was one of most exciting new characters in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Ryan argues that George Lucas got rid of him too soon.
One minute after midnight on the 3rd May 1999, a branch of Toys R Us in Brandon, Florida became a hive of activity. Having queued patiently in the dark for hours, scores of shoppers - most of them full-grown men - funnelled through the doors. Some of them stacked merchandise up in their cradled arms, while others heaped toys up in their baskets and trolleys.
It was all part of the Star Wars fever that had begun in October 1993, when George Lucas first told Variety about his plans to make three prequel movies, and continued to grow over the next six years. Lucasfilm cannily fanned the flames of anticipation itself, with the Special Edition re-release of the original Star Wars trilogy. Suddenly, the franchise seemed new again,...

The May issue of Game Informer magazine contains an in-depth article regarding a video game that Red Fly Studio was developing for the sinister Sith Lord, Darth Maul. The character, who was played by martial artist turned actor Ray Park, made his first, brief appearance in George Lucas' Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Although he didn't have much screen time he did have the most memorable scene, as he battled Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn(Liam Neeson) and Jedi apprentice Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor). To this day, Darth Maul has remained a popular character among fans and it should come as no surprise that a video game was being developed to cash in out that interest. Sadly, the game was abandoned while it was still in its infancy. Check out a video below that contains gameplay footage, concept art and more information as to why the game never...

One cannot let bad movies get in the way of being a horror geek. We struggle through tons of rotten movies (that usually have great promotional artwork) in order to locate the good and occasionally great pieces of genre cinema -- but sometimes a really bad horror flick is nothing short of mystifying. As in: not only is the new indie horror / thriller Jinn an outrageously bad film, but how does something so amateurish make it way into 150 theaters while great indies open in 16 theaters and VOD at the same time? Money, that's how. The company that bankrolled the SyFy-grade Jinn (and jammed it with bizarre promotions for an automobile) also paid for a semi-wide release. So this is not a case of a distributor risking money on an indie film they really like; it's a bunch of wannabe filmmakers playing pretend. And boy does the result show on the screen.

Jinn, a new horror thriller written and directed by Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad, seems to have it all: ancient mythology, supernatural beings, and humans battling overwhelming forces in a classic struggle for survival. But most of all, Jinn has Firebreather, a highly customized Chevrolet Camaro built especially for use in the film.
The hero in Jinn is played by Ray Park – Darth Maul from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and Toad from X-Men. A former movie stuntman, Park drives Firebreather throughout the film as he takes on the Jinn, legendary supernatural creatures who walk invisibly among humans until they emerge to stir up trouble. Of course, this very special car plays an important role in an epic Bullit-meets-Underworld battle. While Park may technically be cast in the lead role, the real star of Jinn – well, for gearheads at least – is Firebreather.

The Jinn appear in Islamic and Arabic folklore, and the term literally means "hidden from sight." This April, they finally come out of hiding.
Set for North American theatrical release on April 4th is the new supernatural thriller Jinn, and the idea behind it is to paint an accurate portrait of the mythological creatures that haven't really been explored on the big screen - outside of the Wishmaster franchise, of course.
Written and directed by Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad, the film centers around an automotive designer who discovers an ancient curse connected to his bloodline, and soon finds himself being hunted down by a particularly evil Jinn. And the creature isn't interested in granting wishes...
