Every year I find myself searching for ways to cope with awful January grimness, and luckily I've found us a kickass anniversary to celebrate: Password debuted in primetime 50 years ago this week, and it remains one of the definitive entertainments in the wide, mysteriously under-respected world of game shows. Like with most great game shows including To Tell the Truth, The Price is Right, and Pyramid, gaming genius Bob Stewart (who passed away this year at age 91) was a critical part of Password's inception. It's a parlor activity of hints and responses, but somehow the suspense of coming up with just the right clue is telegenic enough to endure decades of relevance.
Let's take a look back at multiple versions of this fine show and mutter in our best monotone narration, "The password is... fabulous."
Forget George Burns and Gracie Allen: I prefer the team of Allen Ludden and Betty White!

One of the most popular game shows in TV history has got to be Password. The game show began on CBS daytime in 1961 and various versions of the show have been on the air for a total of 20 years over the past five decades. There have even been times when the show aired in daytime and primetime simultaneously.
The last primetime version, Million Dollar Password, didn't fare as well as the previous incarnations. It was hosted by Regis Philbin and lasted just 12 episodes.
Betty White holds a record for being the only person to guest on all the versions of Password. She also met host Allen Ludden on the series. They were married in 1963 and remained together until his death from cancer in 1981.

The Early Show's Julie Chen is set to return from maternity leave in just a couple of weeks, but she's already exploring new options now that she's had her first child with CBS Corp CEO Leslie Moonves. An insider confirmed online reports that Chen is developing a View-like talk show pilot in which she and other panel members would discuss topical events from a mother's point-of-view. Sara Gilbert (Roseanne) also has signed on as a panelist and will help executive produce the pilot that's under consideration to replace the canceled As the World Turns. It's unclear how the new talk show,...

CBS has yet to announce how it will fill the void in daytime once As the World Turns ends its 54-year run in September, but it's looking more likely that the network will go with a game show. There was early speculation that CBS could pick up a CBS/Paramount-produced talk show hosted by Valerie Bertinelli, but a new version of Pyramid appears to be a safer bet (a syndicated talk show for Bertinelli remains in development at the network's sister studio.) The network confirmed that it plans to shoot a new pilot for Pyramid, which was originally considered as...

CBS has announced that its' Password remake will return to the airwaves later this month. Will host Regis Philbin and the game show be back next season?
Million Dollar Password premiered on June 1, 2008 to 10.69 million viewers. The ratings dropped a bit after that but CBS still ordered six additional episodes for the 2008-09 season. Year two kicked off in December and the show hadn't lost any steam.
Still, the network pulled the show after only four of the six had aired. While the overall viewership was still strong, the audience does tend to skew older. The network typically attracts an older demographic and is always looking to shift towards younger viewers that are more attractive to advertisers.
CBS has announced that Million Dollar Password will be returning on May 24th. For right now, only the two remaining episodes are scheduled; with Jamie Kennedy and Norm MacDonald, and Jeff Garlin and...

Football was the ratings king Sunday, handing NBC a nightly victory and helping Fox finish at No. 2.
NBC's "Sunday Night Football" broadcast of the game between the Carolina Panthers at the New York Giants scored a 12.9 household rating/21 share in the meter markets, up 30% vs. the same night last year.
Reliable time-adjusted total viewer and adults 18-49 numbers for the game won't be available until Tuesday, but NBC is expected to easily win Sunday night in both categories.
An NFL overrun boosted Fox's Sunday slate of animated comedy reruns to second place in adults 18-49 (3.0/8) and third in total viewers (7.6 million).
CBS, the only network to air an all-fresh nonsports lineup -- "60 Minutes," "Million Dollar Password," "Cold Case" and "The Unit"-- averaged 10.7 million viewers and a 2.0/5 in 18-49.
ABC (6.4 million, 1.9/5) was fourth.

Thursday TV's Big Winners: Does quantity count? 'Cause NBC's The Office and 30 Rock aired two repeats each, the most of any series on a night of repeats. Hooray! Actually Size Counts, Especially to CBS: The network's CSI (12.6 million viewers, per Nielsen estimates) was, by far, the most watched rerun among total viewers and the 18-49 crowd. NBC's first offering of an old Office (4.9 million) did okay, too, tying CBS' Eleventh Hour (10.1 million) for the night's second-best rating in the demo. Guess What Grandpa Was Watching? The return of CBS' Regis Philbin-hosted game show, Million Dollar Password (8.3 million), killed in the adults 50-plus demo. Guess What the...

Unlike many other game shows currently in primetime, the competition moves along very quickly and the home viewers likely enjoy playing along.
Upcoming celebrity guests include Monique Coleman, Susie Essman, country singer Sara Evans, Damien Fahey, skateboarder Tony Hawk, Rosie O'Donnell, former Miss USA Shanna Moakler, Steve Schirripa, and Steven Weber.
