Palestinian actress Maisa Abd Elhadi was injured on Sunday while participating in a protest in the Israeli city of Haifa against Israeli police brutality and the planned expulsion of Palestinian families from their long-time homes in East Jerusalem.
A source close to the actress said she had been filming the demonstration on Haifa’s central Ben Gurion Avenue when Israeli police moved in to clear the hundreds of protestors. She was hurt when a police stun grenade exploded on the back of her right leg.

2016 looks like a good vintage: Screen’s chief critic and reviews editor Fionnuala Halligan dissects this year’s Competition lineup…
Advance word on the Cannes Competition line-up was muted this year, and smoke signals from Paris indicated that the selection was running very close to the line. Thierry Fremaux talked at the launch press conference about “loyalty” and “risk-taking” in the same breath. While these aren’t two words which tend to mix well at Cannes, the festival’s 2016 line-up certainly promises to deliver fresh film-making. “We know the risks we are taking,” said Fremaux.
There’s little doubt that Cannes 2016 looks like a good vintage. Typically of a festival which always surprises, there’s no way to tell if this will be a good, bad, or - worst of all - indifferent mix until we taste. One note we won’t apparently be savouring in the Competition, however, is a sense of France and its relationship...

Way before we all came to know and love Sharlto Copley as Wikus in District 9, he was actually working on a budding career as a director. Back in 2006, Copley co-directed a feature with production partner Simon Hansen, a thriller starring Rutger Hauer and Darren Boyd ("Personal Affairs") called Spoon. And after many years of waiting, an early teaser trailer has hit the web, courtesy of Twitch, giving us our very first look at Rutger Hauer as Victor Spoon. It's kind of creepy in a sense, almost in a Cronenberg kind of way, and it's about a guy who blacks out during moments of extreme stress. So uh, just check this out, if you're curious. Watch the teaser trailer for Simon Hansen & Sharlto Copley's Spoon: A thriller with supernatural overtones about a man with a medical condition that causes him to black out during moments of extreme stress,...

Within seconds of beginning my search for where I could watch this six-part UK-based web thriller, it had been compared to not one (Saw) but two (Seven) American movies and not one (24) but two (Lost) American television series. At almost the same time, Girl Number 9 was letting me know it was made specifically for the internet, and unlike anything I had seen before. Written by James Moran (Doctor Who, Torchwood,Severance) and starring Gareth David-Lloyd (Torchwood), Joe Absolom (Doc Martin, Personal Affairs), and Tracy-Ann Oberman (Doctor Who, Eastenders), the series has a lot of BBC talent to back it up—along with a huge advertising campaign. The Guardian in particular did a very interesting piece that was open-ended: it began its review at episode 1 and then added information as each subsequent episode was released. The author also encouraged its readers to join in the discussion in the comments section,...

Q: Does Lucy Lawless regret that they killed Xena? – Craig, Norfolk, Va
A: In fact, she does. In “A Friend in Need,” the two-part Xena: Warrior Princess series finale back in 2001, Xena allows herself to be killed, so she can become a ghost and fight a spiritual being. Later, after Gabrielle finds a way to bring Xena back to life, the Warrior-Princess heroically chooses to stay dead in order to make amends for past sins. The series ends with Gabrielle, a full-fledged warrior at last, carrying on Xena’s legacy.
Gabrielle bids farewell to Xena
But as I’m sure you know, Craig, fans were livid – both at the death itself and over the way she died, which included, um, decapitation.
“At the time, we thought that was a really strong choice,...
