When you grew up loving movies movies the way I did, it can be lonely. Every Sunday all the other kids gathered around with their families and watched football while I hoped for a blizzard to freeze the game out so the TV stations would have to resort to playing old Hammer flicks. Everyone else could get away with wearing team jerseys all year, but I could just wear a costume one day a year.
Terribly sad, I know. I promise I’m getting to the point.
I loved movies. Still do, but back then, it was a quiet love. If I talked about anything other than Star Wars, then I was weird. Sure, people liked movies, but no one Really loved them. It was kids' stuff, even the harder stuff was just meant to be a distraction, not a passion. I was weird for loving this stuff,...

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Stevan Mena, the director, writer, and producer of Bereavement. This is the second film in the Malevolence trilogy, with his previous efforts including Malevolence (2004) and Brutal Massacre: A Comedy (2007).
During our interview, Stevan and I got to chat about the actors in the Bereavement, plans for the third film in the trilogy, and a bit about Mena beyond the limelight.
**Spoiler Warning: This interview discusses elements of Malevolence that would be considered spoilers to those that have not seen the film. **
Acting:
For anyone who has seen Malevolence, you probably expect that Bereavement would follow suit in brutality and anguish. While Bereavement continues to pack the ferocious nature seen in Malevolence, one thing it adds to the mix is character growth. Not only does the viewer get more insight into the enigma that is Martin Bristol, but we actually have deeper connections between the characters in general.

I didn’t have an opportunity to check out “Bereavement” when it hit theaters earlier this year, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem at the moment. The fine folks at Anchor Bay Entertainment are releasing director Stevan Mena’s critically-acclaimed slasher on DVD and Blu-ray this August. And while I was a little harsh on Mena’s “Malevolence” when I first saw it years ago, the film has actually grown on me. Besides, “Brutal Massacre: A Comedy” was exceptionally badass, and I’m anxious for Mena to return to the darker side of the genre. If you need a synopsis, then here you go: In 1989, six-year-old Martin Bristol (Spencer List) was kidnapped from his backyard swing in Minersville, Pa. Graham Sutter (Rickaby), a psychotic recluse, kept Martin imprisoned on his derelict pig farm, forcing him to witness and participate in unspeakable horrors. Chosen at random, his victim...

Writer/director Joshua Hull is quickly making a name for himself within the horror genre in a very short time. His first feature, the zombie comedy Beverly Lane, debuted this past October to sell-out crowds and he’s currently gearing up for his next project Idiot Gore, which is set to start filming soon. Hull, who decided to use an unprecedented approach to his latest project by letting fans compete to create his killer, is keeping that collaborative spirit alive and will be filming scenes from Idiot Gore during the upcoming Days of the Dead convention.
Check out Hull’s five favorite indie genre projects below!
1. Scalene (Directed by Zack Parker)
Zack is good friend and I was lucky enough to attend the private screening of Scalene a few weeks back. It's not a horror film, it's a perceptual thriller starring Margo Martindale, Hannah Hall and Adam Scarimbolo. I had...

Jon Keeyes is the director behind the horror movie American Nightmare starring two legendary horror divas, Debbie Rochon and Brinke Stevens. With American Nightmare, Jon Keeyes created a low budget indie slasher that was accessible and commercial, yet a bit edgy and different. It featured Debbie Rochon in the leading role as a psychopathic killer who stalks a group of friends one Halloween night bringing their worst fears to life. American Nightmare proved that Rochon just isn't another pretty face, but a force to be reckoned with. She turned in a performance that was loud and in your face, but also subtle and naunced. No easy combination to pull off! There has been talks swirling in the air of a sequel and a possible tenth anniversary edition, but untill that day comes, we will have to wait in anticpation of Keeyes latest film, The Gathering, which is getting under way.

So Ryan (plagiarize), his wife Katy and I missed most of the first day of the show, having to do things like “work” and “travel” and stuff, but that in no way dampened our return to the Weekend of Horrors in Secaucus, Nj. Man, am I glad I made it, too; during the show they announced that the Weekend of Horrors is returning to Manhattan, the Javits Center no less, for their next show, so this could feasibly be the last chance we had to get down and dirty in Jersey!
You know things are off to a good start when the first face you see is Ted Geoghegan’s. The name might not mean much to you, but Ted and I go way back to when we both ran...
